Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ideal avocado seed growing methods ?
« on: November 23, 2019, 12:58:31 PM »
Ive never used bottom heat for sprouting avocado seeds but ive heard of it done by others so does it really help speed up sprouting, also is it a better idea to sprout in soil over sprouting in water what are the pros and cons, ive sometimes had fungus attacks sprouting seeds in water even cchanging water every 3 days or so.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Reed Avocado Seeds as Roostock ?
« on: November 22, 2019, 04:12:41 PM »
Who has used Reed avo seeds as rootstock ? Im looking for long term results, like how fast growing, are they able to be grafted onto faster than average seeds? How strong of root system do  they have ? Do they seem resistance to rootrot, and last how do they compare to Zutano or Bacon seeds used as rootstock ? Ive got a few reed seeds sprouted now, appear to grow a very long trunk but still way too small to graft unto yet.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / wanted 500 Zutano Avocado Seeds
« on: July 07, 2019, 05:46:32 PM »
Im looking for a very cheap sorce for Zutano Avocado seeds if cheap enough i can use 500 or more, prefer large as i can get, and not needing anytime soon winter 2019 to 2021 is soon enough, other wanted seeds in much smaller numbers are Duke,Aravaipa,Lula,Walden, Reed seeds and will pay more for them.

38
Its reported by some as Aravaipa tree being able to tolerate 10 f maybe it can and maybe it cant, i heard of no living proof but best i can tell the area where mother tree is it never gets that low and surely never on a regular basis, more likey common winter temps are prob somewhere between 20 to 28 degrees so my advice for anyone thinking they will grow well in 10 degress dont relay on that.I would winter protect any young avocado tree below 32 and not take any risk at least until tree has matured and got several years under its belt. I do think the high summer high temps the tree can likely take are much more reliable but still make sure young tender trees are painted white and prob use a 50 to 70 percent shade cloth depending on where one lives.

I dont know all that much about the Arapaiva Avocado tree, i ve read it can take 10 to 14 degrees of cold and i assume that is a large 30 foot tall tree, someone else wrote it can handle 120 degree days, thus thriving in arizona i guess, i read fruit  size and taste is like quality of hass but with a smaller seed. Sounds like the tree is also a fast grower, but can someone share more facts on this variety like does the fruit have good shelf life? does it ship, bruse easy? , how long does fruit need to hang on tree, who has scions or whole small trees for sale, also anyone with a large producing tree can you shed more light or correct the false rumers?

« on: May 11, 2019, 02:20:15 PM »

45
Ive heard dusa rootstock is good for salt tolerance and root rot resistance but is clonal rootstock over hyped ? Someone told me some growers complain about clonal rootstock that the roots are too shallow that they dont have a deep growing tap root like a rootstock grown from a seed has is this true ? Also how hard is it to grow ones own clonal rootstock in a greenhouse? Can a beginer have success ? Or is air layering on a avocado tree a better way to go ?

46
I have a couple of Duke avocado trees in pots that i plan on planting in high foothills in Fresno county california does anyone know of other kinds best for cold besides the Mexicola or is the Duke the most cold hardy i will find ? Also is 50 percent pumice in pots ideal in pots for avocados? Is anyone growing the black johnson avocado tree or the del ray avocado tree ?
