Would like to add an observation here. I have 5 seedlings growing in a wet spot pauma valley, east san diego county. Under a cluster of willow trees. They look happy enough but are very slow growing. The oldest was planted too close to the seasonal puddle. Still it does not seem to mind being submerged and was underwater 2 months the last two years and still started leafing out while underwater.

Theres probably some in poway. I know there are lots in ramona. I have a probable male in my front yard and another a mile away.

Biqi seedling. Fruited last year. Carlsbad, CA. 4 miles from the coast. This is from the part of the tree that has flowered last couple years. 2-3 times a year. Looks like flower buds to me.

My friend has been watching similar videos and is trying rooting cuttings. Theyre leafing out now but its early.

On older wood i agree matching is better but its tricky on young growth hugging the trunk. They snap off during wrapping. But im having good success with offset cleft grafts on fresh growth. As far as the timing i double checked my texts. First bark grafts were may 8th! Not end of june. So shoots took 2.5 months.

Heres some picks.

Trunk had three branches. We lopped off all three and left one nurse lateral. Each trunk got 3 bark grafts. These 2 of 9 made it. Jan boyce.






Those were grafted may 8th. There was actually a third attempt on the nurse branch with matched sizes that all failed. That was the june 24th grafting. We then grafted these july 27th. Fuerte and hass

And just to complete the story heres a pick on july 15th of the soon to fail nurse branch grafts. The big shoot in the middle is 9 weeks old and grafted couple weeks later.

That doesnt seem right Shane.  4 weeks later and it had new growth that was 3/4"?  It always seems to take months for my stumps to just start putting out suckers, then 6 months to be 3/4".

It definitely wasnt months. We topped and did bark grafts and when those started failing in 4 weeks switched to the new shoots. I might be over estimating the thickness. Will get pictures. Maybe yours take months because its december? Also this was complete topwork not just a branch. It was going nuts. [Wrong again. See below.]

Cookie, we only did offset cleft. Side veneer seems reasonable.

Checked my notes. Topped the tree june 24th, grafted the new vigorous 3/4 inch vigorous shoots, some 2 feet long, july 27th. 4 weeks later.

About a year ago i grafted onto fresh avocado shoots on a topped tree. Worked pretty well. Moren recently i helped a friend top work a mexicola grande. We started with bark grafts and got 2 of 8 to take. Then when all the new shoots started appearing we tried again on those. They were growing really fast, up to half an inch wide. Was like grafting onto a wet noodle or half cooked cucumber. We had to be really careful with wrapping since they snap off unlike waiting till the next year. But got great takes. Like 6 out of 8. 4 varieties. Ive never had such success on avocado. Hope this helps.

Just wanted to post a note. I planted a bunch of seedlings where they probably shouldnt be. First observation is that deer and probably squirrels or rats love the leaves. Plants get stripped every few months. They were fine with the two winters before last but then got a cold wet winter with a couple hard freezes. Probably 29 or 27 degrees. The bad news is that they all died to the ground. One made it through the first couple but then succumbed. The good news is they all regrew from the roots.
