Hi.  Miguel in Portugal often has seeds for sale.  Seems like some of them are improved varieties.
However, twice in my life I've had the Fed's visit me due to international purchases.  (When I lived in Virginia 15 years ago, had purchased seeds on eBay from a Chilean seller.  Apparently not all of his seeds were legit and was throwing in some noxious weeds.  Luckily, nothing i bought germinated but that didn't stop the feds from coming to my house twice.  Once to do a general check, 2nd time to do a thorough check of my yard.  And then about 10 years ago, I purchased from Thailand 2 supposed improved varieties of wax apples.  Even though they came with sanitary certificate, the feds said there were bugs coming over from Thailand.  Some, I had to double bag the small tree and put it on my front porch for them to collect and incinerate.  I told the man that I enjoyed collecting rare fruit trees and he advised me to only purchase from within USA territory.)
So, I kind of feel like I am on a list somewhere in DC and I don't want to oress my luck.
That's why I am asking if anyone regularly gets seeds from Portugal, can we work out where we split the cost and split the seeds but they get sent to you.  I live in Scottsdale, AZ if anyone close to me buts them, if not I guess can be anywhere in USA.

I purchased my yosemite last year and was very excited about the purchase.  However, it kind of languishedlast year, recovered this spring, but now that we are in the 100's in phoenix, it is having twig die back.  Do I need to treat it like Kisha mandarin and have it in a shaded location?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Should I keep my pink wampee
« on: February 02, 2025, 01:02:04 AM »
It is growing well for me in AZ.
The thing is, I purchased it before finding out that yellow wampee has the superior flavor.
Anyone have experience tasting pink wampee?  Anything below a good flavor profile means it has to go.  I don't have room in backyard for subpar varieties.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is there a fast fruiting Inga variety?
« on: August 22, 2024, 10:49:12 PM »
I have what was labeled as Inga edulis growing at my townhouse.   It is at least 10 years old, very healthy, and usually only a tiny bit of leaf die back in the winter.  But not one flower in 10 years!  I would like to try the fruit before I croak, anyone have advice on one's that will produce pods at a young age?

Well, I've officially run out of room on my property and I am looking at the next phase of gardening and start grafting on existing trees.
I want to first start with my peach.  I purchased it as a 4 in 1 low chill, but 2 grafts died and another is June pride, which is not low chill enough for me.
Looking for mid pride, may pride, August pride and arctic star nectarine.
I've also never grafted before, so hoping to find someone in phoenix metro to help.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are there dwarf loquats
« on: November 22, 2023, 12:28:12 AM »
I had a big in the ground.  But after 8 years in ground with no flowers and the past 2 years, about 30% die back, I decided to axe and plant something more productive.
Would like to may be container grow a loquat, that way can move it into shade in June, July, August.
Anyone know of dwarf varieties with sweet fruit and if so, where to purchase?

Citrus General Discussion / What brand of fertilizer
« on: October 11, 2023, 10:21:05 PM »

My male kei apple got enormous this summer and a few years back my female died.  Would love to start producing some fruit but cannot find sexed plants (at least ones I can afford).  Anyone have a plant for sale or know a nursery where I could purchase one?

I had two pitombas in the ground this year and I think both croaked from our unrelenting july/August heat.
I bought before I knew much about them.  But, I've since heard that a fair amount of them taste like ham.  That would not be a fruit I would personally want to grow.
Was wondering if anyone had a plant, or seeds or knew of anyone selling pitomba that has produces that taste like a fruit and not meat.

Citrus General Discussion / Replacement for dying citrus tree
« on: August 02, 2023, 01:35:35 AM »
My Kishu mandarin is not doing well in this heat.  Large branches are dying.  30 days over 110 in AZ.
It's been watered well.  It has never really produced fruit and probably 8 years in ground.
So, when it cools down, I am going to take it out.
Looking for suggestions for a good variety.
What I have now is heirloom AZ variety orange, Rio red grapefruit, blood orange, whatever the Tangerine variety they sell at Lowes and a Cara Cara.
Not doing any kind of lime, as they attract roof rats.
Right now, I am leaning towards a yosemite gold. But, thought I would ask for suggestions.

Citrus General Discussion / Tarocco Orange
« on: December 13, 2022, 12:19:25 AM »
Very happy, my blood orange is bloody.  I know Tarocco isn't supposed to have deep pigment so I think it turned out an appropriate color.
The one I ate so far was good, mild taste with that raspberry tang present.  Not bad for first year fruiting

Citrus General Discussion / New Zealand lemonade fruit
« on: November 09, 2022, 12:13:22 AM »
Was very excited that I had a ripe fruit on the ground today.  Brought it in and ate that bad boy up.  I think it fits true to the name.  It was 60% sour lemon, 40% sweet (I couldn't detect any mandarin flavor) and it had a lime after taste.
I think it is just a tad too sour for general public, but, it was tantalizingly close.  For all of us fruit nuts, I think it's a pretty good fruit.  Oh, and it was pretty juicy.
