Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee flowers fail or win? Help pls
« on: March 26, 2024, 06:10:25 PM »

So a while back I wondered what to do with lychee I didn’t know if new growth was flush or flower so I pinched back a lot of the tips. And those tips grew to flowers even though without pinching them they were flowers…so basically the whole tree is flowering with the small I pinched portion going first…and all I see are male flowers😭🤧😣
So I read up and it says that males come first then females, but I. Don’t know when that switch happens.

Pictured is the unpinched flush, so it’s the first to flower, while 75% of the tree hasn’t opened yet.

So what is the consensus
And also if everything is male, it’s gonna be tough to fruit this😣 I don’t know what the plan is long term if it can’t do it right.

I know male flowers happen when it’s too warm, but is there other factors like nutrition?
I need some advice….thanks!

Sorry my syntax sucks rn.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / (GAG) The Official Grape Addict Gang
« on: January 11, 2024, 08:56:40 PM »
Welcome to the GAG also known as the Grape Addict Gang. I would like to document the grape growers of America. I want to put an emphasis on grapes that can be grown in tropical climates, not just the boring cold hardy grapes although those are welcome. Also I want to document the varieties that have not made it into the US like ruby roman, and black king.
Also, have people tried the Ison's muscadines. Top tier grapes that can be grown virtually everywhere.
First off on the agenda, we have the shine muscat...
with the official release of shine muscat to the USA last year and since the thread in the Buy Sell Trade section kinda morphed into a discussion thread, I think it's time to have a thread dedicated to new grapes. It is capable of growing in tropical conditions, as people who I sent some plants to reported that they are doing good even in South FL.
Still, further research is needed to see if they will perform in FL, but I think they will given the climates in Asia they grow in.
How's everyone's shine muscat doing?

I am curious to see how it stacks up against other common muscat grapes grown in our conditions.
Also, I would like to see us all crack the code for gibberellic acid treatment on the flowers.

Also, any other notable grapes we are missing out on?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Am I toast? Lychee flushing now
« on: December 22, 2023, 02:03:26 PM »

My lychee is flushing now. Does that mean it won’t flower later this spring😭
The lows in the greenhouse are mid 40s so I don’t know why it’s growing now😤

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sugarcane growing question
« on: December 21, 2023, 07:36:14 PM »
I know it's pretty easy to grow sugarcane, but I hate how it gets really big and has annoying leaves.
How long does it take to get to a harvestable size.
Could I plant starts out in the spring and harvest them in the fall so I don't waste space on them in the greenhouse?
Can I grow it in a 100 gallon tub?
Or do they take a while to grow?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / So Dry...Where's the rain?!
« on: November 16, 2023, 10:34:36 AM »
If you don't know, my area is in a huge drought...
In the last 70+ days, we've only gotten 0.42 inches of rain...
That's only 0.16 more inches than what Death Valley Got during the same time period.
The plants are so sad lol.
How is everyone else doing?
When researching land in FL, I heard that some places don't get much rain during the winter at all either.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Free Yangmei Giveaway FINISHED
« on: November 06, 2023, 06:01:20 PM »
Hey all, I figured it's time for another giveaway.
I don't want my rose red yangmei.
It's another rare one from overseas...But, I am fairly certain it has RKN.
I will prune it back and ship you the plant (Scions are for my friend).
But I don't want to sell something defective.Well it's not defective. But why buy something with RKN?
So I was thinking on how I could structure a giveaway. I was thinking I'd post a math problem and say first one to solve it gets the tree. But nowadays, you can just googles the problem and get an answer. No fun. And you guys have already guessed my ACT scores from last time ;D . After some thinking how about you guys try to guess the number of jaboticaba varieties that I have.
There we go.
You are allowed 2 guesses per forum member. Guessing ends on 11/10.
You must guess the exact number in order to win. If no one guesses it, I will keep the tree. But if no one guesses the exact number, I will send the person who got the closest a tree or rare jabo scion of their choice.
It's 100% free. No shipping fees you need to pay.

Have fun! Also quick life update - next semester I will be taking soil science. Pretty excited for the class.
