Hello Everyone!
Looking for p. nitida. I have a plant, and have some sprouts that may or may not make it (snail attack).
As I don't know if 2 plants are need for pollination/fruit (does anyone know if p. nitida is self fertile?), looking for another plant.
Willing to buy or even trade. Not sure my plant is big enough for cuttings yet, but would be willing to trade material with another nitida owner. Have other material for trade.

I have a young Nitida but mine is way young. Not sure if self pollinating but I hope it is because I only have the one plant. It is a quick grower though and develops roots super fast so I suppose will know by next year or 2 if self fertile. I am basically treating it like a regular passionfruit and it is doing great.

I have one in pot thats probably big enough for taking some cuttings. Would be into trading.

Also the guy i got it from said that he got good fruit set with hand pollination, he didnt say anything about needing multiple plants.

I have several Passiflora laurifolia sprouts coming up in pot. I read that Laurifolia is quite similar to Nitida, maybe even a pollinator? They're too small for the journey now, but should be good to go in the spring. I'll send you one.

Thanks Benjamin. I have a few p. laurifolia plants. One of them is over 60 feet. Grows up and down a large pongam tree. Was sold to me as nitida, but has revealed itself to be otherwise. Will post a pic soon, the stalk on this thing is nuts.

Just as a follow up, I can confirm that Nitida can probably withstand some amount of cold at a young age. Doing great in 10b outdoors potted the whole winter. I did cover it with a plastic bag on the coldest of cold December nights (probably high 30s here so not too cold) but all it showed was a loss of maybe a few older leaves and its growth slowed down, but is now picking back up quickly probably approaching close to 1.5-2 feet tall now.

SDPirate, having similar experience here in 10b on the East Coast. Repotted a few weeks ago, and she's been cooking along. Didn't seem fazed at all by the recent cold spells. And another one is on the way.

Try using Passiflora caerulea for pollination (if you don't care about hybridizing). They are a stud in my garden and it's what i use to pollinate my stubborn fruits.

Update on the Nitida. The vine went semi-dormant here, I assume because our particularly rainy and cold winter. It would drop a few bottom level leaves but still push out growth slowly on the top. Now that we are starting to warm up, new growth and vines emerging at the bottom.

The main vine at the soil is starting look more woody as well. Probably will still be a while before I have abundant vines.

Wow Rob, yours is killing it. Just shows you how different our zones can be with the same label, no doubt you guys have higher humidity and all that. I am just glad that mine made it through our winter and ready to kick into high gear for growth.

I'm super interested in p. nitida. How are y'alls plants doing? I'm in SoCal don't 10b and have around 15 passiflora varieties including some p. Laurifolia seedlings. Looking to add p. Nitida. But curious if it needs a pollinator. I do have 5 different caerula planted from different sources to help with pollination too if needed.

Mine is doing fine. It does become a little ragged looking in our winter but is bouncing back nicely (no doubt still smaller than Rob's).

I would take caterpillars all day versus the 2 months of straight gray weather we had for May and June, it basically halted any growth. This one really thrives on warm sun (and humidity of which we have little here).

I hear you. I'm in South Orange county on the Coast. This weather has been brutal. Finally have sunshine and my plants are finally starting to grow. I also lost some other passify from all the rain we got this winter.

Too soon for me to cut. Now that summer sun is kicking it is looking a little less ragged. Will probably hit it with some hollytone again soon. Here is a pic from today.

Did we ever find out if P. nitida is self-fertile? I just have one now, the others inexplicably dying. If anyone still has some seeds available, please let me know. Also can trade cuttings by the end of the growing season. Thanks!

Sad to report our vigorous vine has died. Not sure if the heatwave was partially responsible, but this is the 2nd nice sized vine that has died on me. This one was in a pot, the other was planted in ground. Anybody having luck with passiflora nitida?

Define luck? Lol. I can post another picture of mine later on, I don't really have a recent one. It picked up some growth during summer but not a whole lot, probably nowhere near what you had going on there in Florida but we also rarely peak above mid 90's here on the coast. I am convinced it would definitely do better somewhere that has consistent warmth/humidity throughout the year. That being said mine is alive and fine for now, but with winter approaching I imagine it will look ragged coming out of it once again. The only good thing I know to come out of it is it can handle like 36F in our cold snaps and be fine. Fingers crossed that it flowers before the end of its lifespan. ;D

Trust me I have no skill unless you count surfing this forum for a year and googling the species for 5 minutes. I just make sure it is moist throughout summer, helps that I don't pick up the fallen leaves and just leave them on top of the soil to lock it in. A good misting on the leaves on hot days to keep up humidity and a little hollytone once in a blue moon when I remember. Stays in in full sun year round. I don't really recommend this species here as it is somewhat slow and stumbles through winter. That being said alive for now now and thriving to a certain degree. Once I get it to a fruiting stage (if it isn't self sterile, seems like we don't know) or the point where I can let go of some cuttings I will come back here and let you all know.
