Title: Best mangos of this season
Post by: JulianoGS on July 07, 2022, 10:05:55 AM
We had a dismal mango season this year of 2022, the great mango reset!

Best ones so far:

Carrie
Valencia Pride
Coconut Cream

Peak mango season hasn't even started in Central Florida for us who protected our bloom. The tropical storm was south of most of us and it has been a less than average rainy season so far.In no particular order Marc Anthony Bombay seedling local favorite Julie Orange Sherbet and Phoenix from West Palm Beach Dot and Dwarf Hawaiian from my backyard. Accidentally knocked off a Sugarloaf so they're getting close to being ready. Honorable mention lemon meringue and Pickering from my backyard.

PPK/LM, but other than that I've been eating mangos mostly from the neighborhood--quite a few seedling trees.

My Glenn's have been excellent this year... Massive bumper crop.   Had two different flushes, one early and one late.  So they have been constantly providing since mid-May.   I only have room for one more (or could top work one of my Glenn), probably a VP.

Had a couple of Sweet Tarts today. OMG! Sweet Tart rules so far this year. Perfect mango, even overripe.

Got a nice lineup for the next few days, so will see if anything gives it a run.

Standouts from the West Coast of FLA:
Pickering
Tong Dam
Gedong Gincu*
Bailey's Marvel

I'm almost certain what I thought was a Pim Seng Mun at a 2017 mango tasting was in fact Tong Dam

Standouts from the East Coast of FLA:
Pineapple Pleasure
Guava
Lemon Meringue
Dupuis**
Bailey's Marvel
Sri Lanka

The following caveats occurred as a result of lingering effects of Covid:
*first bites were great, but the taste degraded to a pumpernickel and garlic flavor that was not detected by my girlfriend
**my girlfriend loved this one but I couldn't taste the flavors she claimed were present

We had the opportunity to try a Beatrice, and it would be a great mango for those who love the likes of Angie. We are not those kind of people.

What makes for a "bad season" for mangoes? Is it too much rain at the wrong time, or not enough?

Tonight's unique special mango is a Blackie seedling that came from Jamaica 8 years ago.
It was recently given the name Black Julie. Reaction of my wife. Oh my gosh! This is the bomb! It is slightly tart but gets sweeter and sweeter the closer you get to the seed and completely fiberless. She looked me straight in the eyes and said get the budwood. That has never happened before. She said it is in same League as Julie but uniquely different

Thanks flip top for proofreading fiberless. I'll go back and make the correction. That's what makes it unique blackie mangoes are known to be very sweet but have a lot of fibers like East Indian. Black Julie will be grafted onto my Bombay which has Marc Anthony and will soon have Starch. The ultimate West Indian cocktail tree

This Sugarloaf I knocked off the tree 6 days ago We just had it tonight it was extremely sweet. We had one previously that fell off the tree but it was a little watery As my wife would say it was just there. This one she says is very good. This is the first crop off of this tree. I told her to go and pick the rest tomorrow.

It had a subtle yellow cast compared to others next to it.I bumped into the tree with some equipment and two fell off very light yellow smooth skin and very sweet.I think at this point I could pick others and let ripen off the tree for very good quality as the sugar level was so high at this point.

I tried quite a few mango varieties this year. I have to say the Cac was a standout, followed by Springfel. The only issue I had with Springfel was a bit of fiber, but other than that it was great. The Cac mangoes were the best I ever had. I wish there were more!

It was a deeply sweet mango flavor with a very small touch of pineapple and coconut. They can be picked as soon as they start showing some yellow color and ripen 3-4 days later. I made the mistake of brushing my teeth about a half hour after the mango and it was like an orange juice/toothpaste experience. I’ve just never had such a great sweet and pleasantly textured mango before. Four of us were taste testing and it blew us all away!

I had a few Dots this past week which were excellent. I don't think they were better than the Pickerings I've had, but they were great if you like a more resinous, spicy flavor. I felt the Cacs were good, but more on the sweet side than the resinous side.

Just my feelings. Everyone has a particular flavor profile they prefer.

This is now on my bucket list… love the flavor of super Julie and ice cream, blackie sounds like something I’d really enjoy.

This year I didn’t eat much mangos, my trees didn’t produce well and I didn’t go out of my way to source anything. Peach cobbler from skahn (sayyid) was lit, really enjoyed it. Loved the ice creams I got from my tree this year.

The most interesting mango experience though was a tasting with nick “urbanmangos” on instagram where I brought a lemon zest from my mothers tree which is 30 ft tall, unmanaged with pruning and no fertilization or care and we ate it side by side with one that he grew. It was night and day difference, he takes great care of his trees. My mothers was less sweet and flesh more juicy where his was larger, sweeter and flesh was more creamy/firmer texture and absolutely delicious the real potential of lemon zest. I really should be helping out with my moms tree and that’s on me but you know schedules and kids ects… My take home from that experience was you can eat the same cultivar grown by two different people and one can be bland just based off how it was grown, seems obvious, but the impact was so noticeable it was like two different mangos, totally wild.

I have a question about Dot. I posted earlier about some Dots i had which were fantastic. They were smallish, like the size of a baseball, with very orange flesh and a more resinous taste. I went back again this week to refill my stock, and this time the Dots were bigger than a softball (see picture), with more yellowish orange flesh, and a sweeter flavor. Also, an exceptional mango. Were both of the mangos dots? Or was the first possibly something else which was mislabeled.

And looking at bovine's coconut cream pictures, maybe these larger ones were coconut cream. The flesh looks identical. They weren't labeled when I got them. I labeled all of the different mangos when I came home.

Good to point out exceptions to most common thinking on growing mangos... Interesting as we are all use to hearing not to fertilize near as much when trees are larger...
Interesting watching Hidden acres video where he says his watering system is on a regular basis  with no decreased impact of taste noted with watering...
A lot of variables. A lot of guessing on best practices, perhaps always changing with each individual location.

I shared a few Carrie today with someone requesting mangos that taste sour & sweet. This first time carrie fan loved them saying that was exactly the taste I wanted.

Another guy the other day ate a Carrie and immediately said they reminded him of Cuban mangos and I believe he also said they are called blackies in Cuba...

All the mangos IMO have been good tasting this year, perhaps my trees are just larger and better providers of essential nutrients/sugars than when younger. (If I had put this element nutrient fertilizer etc on it last year, It would have been easy to draw a false conclusion that that was why my mangos tasted better this year than last... lol... Good thing I did not add anything new to my practices to avoid false assumptions and conclusions lol.._)

Makes perfect sense to me. Healthy trees with more leaves per fruit (leaves make sugars) will make better fruit. Found an interesting article on the subject of anyone is interested.

Made some new friends today some really down to earth folks. They live so far in the bookie country that even the cattle look lost.
One thing for sure they are proud of their Carrie mango tree. They love to talk about Carrie. But I'm here to report they gave me the best Super Julie I've ever had. I was all in to that mango and probably look like the Procter & Gamble Gerber baby. I mean I had it all over my face. I've never worked on a seed like that before. They were laughing at me.

I added up all the votes, and it looks like the big winners for 2022 were CAC and Orange Sherbet, followed by perennial favorite Dot and newcomer Sugarloaf.

(A personal note: I tasted CAC from two different locations this summer.  One was very good, and the other was outstanding.  You can call the dominant flavor "parsnip," or you can call it "cola" or "floral," but it was present in both, as in a lot of SE Asian/"Indochinese" mangoes.)

Sure
Flesh was yellow
And tasted sweet and bit coconut
But it was good coconut
Didn’t have much fiber
Don’t know what else I can say about it but I’m definitely glad I have the tree!
Lol
I don’t like coconut mangoes for example I had a Pickering and I hated it
Previous years it was ok. But this year they had strong coconut flavor. Not a fan

What makes for a "bad season" for mangoes? Is it too much rain at the wrong time, or not enough?

Hi Calusa! For me personally a "Freeze" makes for a very bad mango season  :-\  :'(...it destroyed all my mango blooms and about 18" of all the top branches on the whole tree. Feb 1st we had low temps from 28° to below 32° for appx 8 hours. I am very lucky I only lost 18" of the tree branches, call it "Mother nature's" way of pruning my trees Lol...the trees today doesn't show any worse for the freeze experience. Unless you look really close you can hardly tell the trees suffered too much except for Zero fruits this year.

Along your rain question, I've had experience with too much rain years back, it does make my mangoes have a "washed" out flavor, makes them somewhat watery and not as sweet as when we have a normal rainy season.

Taste wise the one which I've come to enjoy a lot this year was Peach Cobbler. It does have a big problem that another grower agrees on. It ripens on the tree to the point of being soft with absolutely no color blush at all. I have 5 trees and really intended to sell but for that purpose you have to really pick regularly and if you want to get tree ripe forget it. That means squeezing every fruit on the tree every time, or picking a little earlier when you think they are full.

How was the M4 taste?  Can you please describe it?

M4 really lived up to its hype for me. I have a tree that was put in the ground 3 years ago as a 3 gallon. I live in marginal mango territory and we got down to maybe 29-30 F this last winter. Problem with M4 is it is sprawling so it doesn’t protect itself. Consequently I had some decent die back…..but out of the grave it came back with a vengeance. Blooms galore (maximum bloom) and set tons of fruit. Ended up with about 20 full size fruit and had to learn when to pick at the right time. For the Tampa area this year ideally I would have started picking no earlier than the last week of July. Smallest fruit were 1 lb and largest was 29.5 ounces. I fertilize zero and spray nothing on the trees.

The flavor was fantastic. Fiberless flesh, super juicy, and the flavor was pure coconut especially by the skin. There was more subacid flavor by the seed. The ideal ripeness that I found was maybe the second or third day that you could smell the coconut at the stem. The flesh wrinkles a bit too. It isn’t insanely sweet, but the coconut flavor makes this thing a winner for me. I haven’t had Sugar Loaf, but man this tree earned its keep in my yard. Besides sprawling a bit doesn’t seem to be too vigorous.

Hope this helps. Not a lot of info on M4, but it is top notch for sure.

I'll have to to agree that M4 lives up to the hype. I just had two tonight that I got from Bookie Country Grove 6 days ago. I was a little concerned maybe it was picked too early it was Green but it started to get soft but when I cut into it and saw the color of the flesh a smile came on my face. It was soft and I finally tasted the coconut. My wife agreed and said it wasn't just my imagination. As she was washing and cleaning the seeds she said you have two M4s and one lemon zest. I said what do you mean lemon zest your telling me you ate the last Lz. I was saving that to share. What happened to caring and sharing. I was hungry. AHHHHHH! >:(

My 2 cents on the M4, I tried it for the first time this year we got over 20 fruit from 3 grafts I did 3 years ago. I was excited for coconut flavor but the only coconut I got from the M4 was aroma - there's definitely a strong hit of coconut in the aroma (once you cut it open - before that no smell at all which is really weird if the only mango you know is Haden which has a powerful, heavenly scent when ripe). But in the flavor I got citrus notes, maybe some piña colada especially near the shoulders. The flesh is sweetest at the shoulders and by the skin. Delicious mango.

I would definitely agree that it's sweetest by the skin. My wife picked up on some citrus when it was maybe a day under ripe for my preferences, which I didn't really appreciate and would verbalize it as "subacid". We all taste things differently. I will say to get the maximum coconut flavor I really let mine ripen to the point I see skin wrinkling at the top and even some on the bottom. At that point I almost always have been smelling coconut for about 3 days at the stem. That's how I like it best, and I do scrape along the skin as I eat. To each their own though. Don't know exactly where you are, but you're somewhere super tropical and at elevation so it's cool to see it's producing well in those circumstances too!

Sweet tart was really good this year. I had one that was absolutely perfect. My wife's favorite is still Piña colada. We were both really surprised by honey kiss this year though. We had some back to back with cotton candy and preferred honey kiss. The one honey kiss had a brix of 22% and had an orange/citrus flavor close to the seed.

Also, high praise to (USDA) Himsagar and Orange Essence--both top-tier mangos with a nice blend of flavors.  "Supremely delicious," as Har would say.

Bovine, did any of those super julies have the soft tip? I have this problem with my tree, almost all the fruit has nose softening. I wonder if that's something in the soil, or typical of the variety. Otherwise an excellent very productive tree.

Anyone still have mangos left on their trees?  Whatcha got left?  Today I ate the last of the Little Gems I was given by a friend.  Decent-flavored little mango (some actually medium size).  Rating wise, I'd say like 8 out of 10 points.  I've had a good mango summer.  I got to taste Lemon Zest (again) and Cotton Candy (for the first time).  The biggest surprise was how good the seedling mangos were from my neighbor's tree--a tree that gets zero care.

I still have a lot of Little Gems, some might hold another month on the tree.
One thing I noticed this season was minimal coconut flavor on varieties that usually have a lot.
Bailey's, Cotton Candy, and Little Gem were the best mangos I tasted this year.
Dot from 3 different sources were all disappointing compared to other years.

I still have a single mango on an Okrung seedling that bloomed a second time in late April. Estimated harvest date is a little before Thanksgiving.

For late this year Zill 80, M4, and honey kiss have been impressive.

We've had no reports this year on the Zill-80 seedling called Carla, possibly even better than Zill-80. ???

Alex mentioned Carla as an excellent mango in his Q&A of 8/20.  Mid to late season.
