Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Huge bunch of Goldfinger bananas
« on: September 29, 2023, 01:51:41 PM »
Hammer, i don't know any varieties to suggest.  I don't even know what mine are heh.  Came with the house 20yrs ago & i thought it was some tropical big leaf thing till it flowered.  Glad i didn't cut it down :)
Best, ok.  Yes more K then N.
I started giving mine some attention before rainy season ends.  Been a few yrs since i had some to eat.  Concentrated on mangos.

Very nice.  Mine are getting more attention after getting neglected for the past 3yrs.  Planted 8 mango trees.
What do you put on them?  6-3-16 with micros i used, worked quite well, no idea what variety, super sweet, smaller then store bought.

I don't click on anything or understand what you mean by fake clickbait fruit.
Your eyes are better then mine lol.  I'd love to believe it but unless someone here did it, i won't.

Mango ice cream or froz yogurt's easy.
Go healthy frozen yogurt & your froz mango pieces in blender.

As a kid i loved chocolate glazed creme filled donuts.
Jelly donuts were great too.

I don't see mango & donut in same space.  But then i never had home grown mango jelly filled chocolate covered donut.  Hmm...

I'd rather enjoy this years mango experience all over again lol.
I need a donut.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: How many people eat mango skin?
« on: August 09, 2023, 07:47:59 PM »
This is 1st yr for me eating some skins.
Got the idea watching the great Har do so in TT video with M4 & family in India doing so with Cogshall.
1st i eat the slice of flesh, and then as i'm scraping the skin clean with teeth if it breaks, i chew it.  If it's good, keep chewing :)

I did it with those 2 + Pickering & a couple Kents.  Not all of the mentioned are always tasty.  I guess like how i ate a dozen m4, pickering, 6 cogshall & 4 dozen kents & almost none where exactly the same.  Try skin on more then one of even the same fruit.  I froze some slices with skin on.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Top 3 mango varieties poll

Good point about when eaten in ripeness stage.
I've been meaning to ask about wide eating window mangos.
I want something that tastes great for a week, not excellent 1 day :)
Example- my 1st yr fruiting Cogshall & M4.
Didn't like either at 1st, nailed a couple perfect, big difference. Pickering & Kent too.
Kent's still my fav, big old tree & many fruit/chances to nail one just right.
Next yr i expect Maha, Peach C, Phoenix & Raw honey to fruit.

Glad to read good things about Peach Cobbler.  Mine should flower next yr.  Phoenix too.
Would've this yr but i pruned them hard last yr when storm was possibly coming.
Played it safe.

My 1st time fruiting & eating M4, Cogshall & Pickering.
Next yr if peach cobbler, phoenix, maha & raw honey fruit, i'll be certified mango nut now too lol.
Mangos are good.

Edit- Kents in photo too.

Entertaining read.  Almost like watching tasting table vids lol.
Keep in mind s.e.FL had big rain early on (pouring out as i type) so factor that in everyone.
Correct me if i'm wrong but i had feet not inches coming down.  No complaints, trees happy.

Flip, another chance to spray something.  For a few panicles, zep bottle with sulfur water ain't that hard.

Cogshall- had my 2nd ever & this one i waited till i smelled mango passing by counter.
Much better, sweet enough, ate half with skin.  Still needed water afterwards cause it felt & tasted like i ate alot of pepper.  Is pepper taste normal?

Update- i just ate 1 removed from mower path couple weeks ago.
Shriveled up some, was 3/4 size of what's still on tree & it's a M4 :)
1st time ever, weird.  Tasted how good sun tan lotion smells.

Hipas, get that support stick off asap.  Don't need it & looks to be cause of bend.

Jake, yes much rain.  Taste might be right & it's not what i like.
Very acid.  Had to eat some frozen yogurt to cleanse my pallet.  Almost burned!
I know, taste before you plant.  Hopefully it'll improve after couple years or i'll learn to like it lol.

I ate one yesterday that softened after a week.  Picked it cause it was in danger of landscaper.
1st yr fruiting & i didn't love it.  Smaller one he knocked off a few weeks ago was better.

So now i'm wondering when is right time to pick them.
Should they be slightly soft before picking?
Do they lose sweetness if left on too long?

Thanks.

Hammer, yes if older home.  Newer cheaper but still pricey.
Alternative is build it bulletproof & don't get hurricane ins.

20yrs ago you could set your watch every afternoon to the thunder & downpours.
It's Florida.  It rains.  My trees love it.  I have a lawn again lol.
Yes rumor has it climate changes.  I'm not fighting dinosaurs for my mangos.

Sharp spade shovel between it & mother straight down & dig it up & plant a few feet away.
We never removed roots & every one grows.  Easiest things to grow.  Almost can't kill them lol.

Edit- my soil here is typical Florida sand.  Chop it off, plant, water, grow.
Area gets 6-3-16 fert with micros.

Orkine, what variety?  Sorry for your loss, looks like you won't be going hungry though :)

Thanks guys.  How the base of trunk grows (roots growing out of it) might give a clue if it's common to m4.  My other varieties don't have nearly as many.  Hope i like them, looking like it's gonna grow huge in no time.
