So an update. My golden currant bushes produced well this year. Planted in a pretty shaded area, but received more sun due to neighbors elms getting ded. Also had a much wetter summer than average. I think they may be used to a sunnier drier climate (not native to my province). Berries ripening later than my red currants, and about the same time as my gooseberries. The flavor and yield is “fine”, nothing compared to my cultivated currants or gooseberries. They were quite small and reminded me of black currants, but I’m not sure how accurate that is as I haven’t grown any in 10 years because I didn’t like them.

There are a couple of reports of people who were able to grow them outdoors and get a crop around vancouver.

I’ve got all my cultivars in 15gallon tall pots in a 50/50 potting mix coir blend in a greenhouse. I’ve root pruned them aggressively with no ill effects. I keep them pruned to 4-5 feet and get maybe 20 fruits per tree max. The biggest issue is making sure they flower at the same time as many cultivars need cross pollination. I find having 3 different cultivars is best as the earliest flowering one may not set fruit unless self fertile.

Can u share some pics? It may help with problem solving.

Lumi has your Caimito fruited in the pot? Mine is ready to be potted up (15 gallon) but I usually reserve by big pots for proven trees.

Passionfruit in a 35 gallon has worked really well for me. While I agree with Carolyn, passionfruit has been the exception. Last fall I potted up a passionfruit from 2 to 35 gallons (it had been sitting in that container for 2 years and had already sent off a flower) , and with proper training now have 45 fruits on a 10’ vine. I put a lot of partially decomposed fruit and food waste in the bark/potting mix (indoors so not worried about rodents) so it had a good feed as it grew. I read in a paper that with organic farming in a field expected yield for passionfruit is 38 fruits per vine, so I think containers work pretty well.

Any luck with that caimito fruiting? Any tricks with pollination? I’ve had mine flower for the past 3 years but no fruit set.

After watching Carolynns greenhouse tour I realize the “grafted rambutan” is actually a cacao.

Great tour. Super helpful, just realized that my “flowering rambutan” is actually a cacao. The hand chair made me laugh… poor buster.

For indoor container the tree is an indestructible beast but has some downsides. I think it’s a great starter tree for tropical fruit growers. I think it can handle over watering and over fertilization better than most trees, which is good for those starting out who don’t neglect their trees enough. I have mine sitting in 2” of water almost all the time. Only problem are pests, and underwatering in the summer heat causing fruit loss. All that vigorous growth causes it to be a bit of a magnet for mealey and scale, and the bark morphology makes in impossible to totally eradicate.

There are 2 here and more buds just starting. I wasn’t sure what make and female flowers look like (not very good at jackfruit either).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Flowering grafted rambutan questions?

Can anyone tell me if this is a hermaphrodic flower? It was grafted from a hermaphodidic tree. Does anyone have any experience with hand pollination?

My “cheena” is flowering and it looks like there are me and female flowers next to each other. Any tricks? It’s 5 feet tall, in 15 gallon pot and is 5ft tall. In gh no pollinators except me.

Brian, what’s the orientation to the sun? When u clear it out in the summer how hot is it in there? Also if you are interested I figured out that u can use the gh frame to make some mobile booms to support vines like passionfruit, it would work really well if one of your walls is on the south side. They are up out of the way, but can be lowered to prune/train.

Thanks for posting the video, always nice to learn from other people’s successes. It’s interesting how many of the fruiting challenges seem universal to greenhouse growers (ie soursop). I was curious about how many members grow in similar conditions?

I too am interested in your fan, do you know what model it is? I got one that was wet rated 7 years ago and the fan blades edges that hit my passionfruit have started to rust.

Very jealous, do many people grow those in North Queensland?

What are the restrictions like for growing exotic species and importing seeds/scions/plants? I struggle here in Canada getting specialty cultivars of stone fruits due to strict import regulations. Here they are concerned (rightfully) of certain diseases, but don’t seem to care about invasive plants damaging ecosystems.

Here is my experience, not that I know what I’m doing. I grow only in containers, and  I was able to get several seeds from fruit I ate to germinate. 2 years later they aren’t doing much. I think they had been too dry in the winter next to my citrus and mangos and they looked terrible. Now I have them in a more humid region of my gh that is usually around 75-80% rh year round. I think all the ultra tropicals are like this. My rambutan is flowering and my mangosteen is finally growing a bit.

I also water my ultra tropicals with “distilled water” from my dehumidifier mixed with dilute organic fertillizer with a ph 5.5-6.

Where should u get scions from?

Definitely has not been worth the effort but that’s not the point I guess

I really appreciate it when people source scientific literature. Btw I really enjoyed your old posts about your gh. Unfortunately, I found them after I had built mine so I was unable to use your wisdom.

I ended up cracking the base of a 5yo vine in a large pot they get very brittle. It looked intact but u could see the vine just dry up.

I currently have 2 purple in 35 gallon pots 3 and 1 yo. Looks like I may get 75 fruits this spring. I am curious about what is the max number you could grow in a large container? I staring doing proper pruning (not perfect) this year and it made a difference.

Was there a lack of flower production this year? Do people ever thin their fruit during productive years? I was wondering if they are alternate bearing.

My loquats flowered for the first time last summer, I took them all out of the gh in spring when the nights were in the 40’s. I was wondering if I should take one out and leave one in to see if the cold triggers flowering? Thoughts

I’ll post when they germinate. If they don’t I’ll post as well.

Does anyone know what insect normally pollinates these outside of their native range, I was wondering about beetles and ants?

I too am struggling with fruit set for the past 2 years. Does anyone know how long the pollen is viable for? Also I’ve been trying the bag trick for over a year with no luck, the shed pollen ends up being very wet as I think the humid air condenses in the bag at night? I was wondering if a little mesh bag like a tea bag may work better.
