Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Kiwi berry, actinidia arguta
« on: September 19, 2023, 05:53:00 PM »
I tried arctic beauty about 4:1 f:m ratio. I’ll admit it was many years ago when I had no idea what I was doing (not sure if much has changed). It grew really vigorously, looked cool with the pink leaves. I had a tough time managing it (it was hard to not have it a tangled mess) and the fruit were not very plentiful, small and would go from completely underripe to rotting within 2-3 days. The leaves were also very frost sensitive. I kept them for 5-6 years then dug them out.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Companion planting container fruit trees
« on: September 04, 2023, 03:57:25 PM »
I did this for a couple of years using double stacked 1 gallon pots inside of 15-35 gallon ones. I would grow green manures (clover alfalfa,) flowers for beneficial insects, greens for eating, peppers and even alpine strawberries. It worked great until I had a mealeybug infestation (I never had one before) that was out of control and I there were too many places for the bastards to hide. The best part was the small pots acted like a mulch and a drip irrigation system combined, plus when the small plants started to wilt it would let me know that the main plants needed watering.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Bug identification?
« on: August 16, 2023, 07:33:29 AM »
Thanks for confirming. It weird that they showed up seeing as though they are native to Australia and it can go down to -40 here. I don’t know of anyone around me who has a collection of tropical plants who would have released some into the wild. I personally did order some about 7 years ago before I had my greenhouse when I had an infested coffee bean tree, but otherwise I hadn’t even seen a mealybug for 6 years.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bug identification?
« on: August 15, 2023, 01:44:44 PM »
I was hoping people could confirm if this was a mealybug destroyer larvae. I live in Canada in the prairies and took my plants out of my greenhouse cause they were infested with mealy bugs. About 6 weeks later I see a couple of these moving very quickly along a plant. I am curious how it would have gotten here, could it be something else?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Shade tolerant berries?

I have wild strawberries in the same areas and the work well as a ground cover and flower well on the spring before the canopy gets too dense. I’ve also got They don’t produce much in the way of fruit there. I’ve got wintergreen as well but I’m looking for something better tasting. I’ll have to look into watermelon berries thanks for the idea.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: spring blooming loquats
« on: July 16, 2023, 12:42:34 PM »
Funny I just saw this as I was asking what to do with my container loquats that are just about to flower for the first time mid July. I had them in my gh which runs at “tropical temps” (60-85) during the winter, but then took them out to deal with mealey bugs. We had a told snap <55F for about 10 days and now they are flowering.

How does it work with stone fruits will they flower right after chill hours are met?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Shade tolerant berries?
« on: July 16, 2023, 12:34:54 PM »
I have increasing shade in my backyard, I used to be able to grow grapes but now there is only vegetative growth. I transplanted gooseberries against a fence that only gets evening sun. They produced a dozen berries last year but none this year. Should I try something else that is shade tolerant like thimbelberries or black currants (i have both in other parts of my yard) or do u think it’s futile? Note I had the trees thinned last year and I don’t think it did anything.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Loquat blooming in summer
« on: July 16, 2023, 12:29:58 PM »
So I recently had to move all my plants out of my greenhouse cause I was away on a holiday and fighting a mealey bug infestation. My greenhouse was running form 70-86 deg at the time. We had a recent cold spell down to mid 50’s and my 3 loquats all bloomed for the first time. Do I keep these? The same thing happened with my mangos last year (Pickering) and the fruit was really good (from what I can tell living in Canada).

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Best Haskap/honeyberry varieties?

So far boreal blizzard seems to be the best one, but not sure is just because it gets the most sun and they are ripe before the rest. Not sure how people tell if they are ripe. I shake the tree and eat the ones that fall off

Yeah I’ve had it outside for a month, I was hoping that would do the trick. It’s not dropping below 45 anymore at night.do you know if peach trees leaf late if they haven’t had enough chill, or do they just not flower?

13
I had a nectarine in a pot that may have not had enough chill hours this winter. The tree still hasn’t done anything but a scratch test shows it’s still green. Any tricks to forcing it to leaf out or is it just done?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What pineapple guava should i grow?

Not sure which ones, I’m  still trying to figure it out. They need pollinators and sometimes their flowering barely overlaps. I had nikita but it was so early it would only be able to set a couple of fruit cause its flowering period was over before others started. The New Zealand ones sound like they may be best tasting. Mutligrafted varieties look cool, one of the members (perhaps platynum sp?) had an awesome looking tree. I’m trying unique and Coolidge this year as they apparently self pollinating, but unsure of fruit quality. Check for other posts on this topic.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Capsicum tree flowers

Is this different from a pepper plant? I kept a habanero plant for 4 years (my wife loves them) and it started to look like a tree. I also grew a ghost pepper plant to 7 feet until if finally fruited. I then threw it out immediately after taking a bite out of a pepper. I felt like someone what trying to exorcise a demon from my stomach.

What are peoples opinion on ambarella? Precocious and little but to me tastes like a bad cheesy mango. I am wondering if I just haven’t had good ones.

17
Except for a yellow dragon fruit a grew from seed I am completely unfamiliar with cacti fruits. Have you had the chance to try different species?

Congrats on even finding seedsI realize that the chance of me ever being able to get this to fruit is next to impossible, but I’ve been looking for seeds for about 4 years. All the online sellers seem to be sold out. Would u be willing to tell us where did u get the seeds?

How many seedlings are you planning on growing? Are you looking for male and female
Plants?

Ha ha, I tried already unsuccessfully. I probably only get 200chill hours max. We get few clouds in January and my gh temps get over 80F I think it shuts down all the chilling. So inside I can go as low as zone 7 (feijoias) and outside I can push zone 4/5 but I don’t think I get enough frost free days to grow peaches and pawpaws. Perhaps I need another greenhouse.

Thanks everyone for your insight. Yeah, I had actually taken a cutting a while back and it’s already ina 2 gallon pot ready to go. I was actually thinking about getting rid of the old vine anyway this year but it was flowering like crazy and setting fruit this early spring….I guess it knew it’s time was up.

Hey everyone I’ve been growing purple passionfruit for about 6 years in a 35 gallon pot. I know commercially they often replace the vines every 3 years in commercial production. It had been productive (2 crops per year) and then after being away for a week (I had watered it) looked like this and has not recovered. Fruit wrinkles, yellow limp leaves.  Does anyone know if this is how the vines die when they get too old?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rambutan leaves full of holes?
« on: April 12, 2023, 01:30:03 PM »
I was wondering if anyone could identify the source of damage of my rambutan leaves? I’ve never seen any bugs on the plant but they are completely full of holes.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / How far North has someone grown a pawpaw?
« on: April 10, 2023, 09:01:29 PM »
I’m trying to find out how far North you can successfully grow a paw paw fruit? Hardiness is one thing but it think they also need many frost free days that are hot. I’ve been able to keep a small tree alive in zone 3 for one winter but flowering 2 trees and getting fruit is another thing all together. I’m looking for some success stories.

I find it pretty funny that I someone in Florida wants to try to grow fruit from northern Canada, while I spent years designing a greenhouse to grow what you can do in your backward with ease.

Let me know how it goes. I’ll give updates this year if I get a good crop.

Hey everyone, I started a new thread after a comment from Daintree (I think it was Daintree… I went out and enjoyed too many refreshmentz). In people’s experience which tropical fruit trees can and can’t handle root pruning well?
