Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rootstock for Couepia polyandra (Olosapo)
« on: March 30, 2021, 02:38:41 PM »
I bought a couple of "improved" Olosapo seeds a few years ago, and now the tree I retained is big enough to supply bud wood - but I have no idea what to use as rootstock.  Is anyone grafting Olosapo?  Please help :-)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Posh-Te on Soursop
« on: January 29, 2021, 06:55:47 AM »

Does anyone have experience grafting A. scleroderma onto A. muricata?  I've heard that this is a good idea in Florida, since A. scleroderma apparently dislikes our soil.  I have lots of experience grafting mango, but I have absolutely no experience grafting Annona.  Any tips or tricks?  Standard cleft graft, side cleft, veneer graft?

Best regards,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best canistel variety for Florida
« on: December 10, 2019, 10:45:38 AM »
Hi all,

I have room for just one more tree in my yard and I'd like to plant a canistel.  I've read that there can be a lot of variation in fruit quality, so I'm hoping I can get some recommendations for named varieties (and possibly sourcing as well) from folks out there who are currently growing canistel.  Which variety is the tastiest and grows best here?

Hi all,

I have been looking for these 2 A. reticulata varieties forever but no one seems to have them, so I'm hoping someone out there knows where to purchase them, or has budwood for sale.  Thanks, all!

Best regards,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Feijoa and fruit fly in S. Florida
« on: March 25, 2019, 06:34:04 AM »
Hi all,

I have several Feijoa bushes I've grown from seed and which are finally fruiting this year.  Do I need to bag the fruit to avoid worms?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Indian Mangoes in Florida
« on: October 30, 2018, 11:36:34 AM »
Hi all,

I'd love to know what Indian mango varieties are people growing in South Florida.  I imagine that a lot of people are growing Alphonso, Mallika, Allumpur Baneshan and Neelam but what else is growing here?? - and what other varieties do well here?  I want to add to my little collection, and I would love to have some suggestions.  Thanks!

So I finally got to eat a fruit from my Maha Chanok mango tree.  It's a beautiful fruit to look at, it's incredibly sweet (frankly, bordering too sweet) and the texture is really really nice.  BUT, there is a very weird and unappealing flavor in the aftertaste.  Has anyone else noticed this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best month to top-work mango trees, Zone 10b
« on: February 12, 2018, 07:49:07 AM »
Hi all,

I would like to top-work several mango trees this year and I'm wondering if there is a "best month" to do it.  Should I prepare the trees right after they fruit?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTB: Passiflora laurifolia cuttings
« on: November 04, 2017, 01:46:47 PM »
Looking for P. laurifolia cuttings.  I have one, but need a pollinator.

I know that people are growing Kuini in South Florida, and I am wondering if it a tree worth having in my orchard.  What is your experience?  How is the fruit compared to a standard mango?  And how easy / difficult is it to fruit compared to standard mango varieties?  Does it "pug" well?  Is it susceptible to anthracnose / phytopthora?  Is it self-fertile or does it need a companion?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pingan and Pedalai in South Florida, Zone 10b/11

Hi all,

Is anyone  in South Florida growing and fruiting A. sarawakensis and A. sericicarpus?  Can they be grown here?  Are they worth growing?  I don't have a lot of space but would like to add an Artocarpus to my collection and these 2 look very interesting.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Self-Fertile Passiflora

Hi all,

Does anyone know of any resource that lists all of the self-fertile passiflora species?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Tipping Help
« on: April 11, 2017, 12:50:02 PM »
OK, so for years I've been watching the Fairchild mango videos on YouTube and all I keep hearing TIP TIP TIP to control tree size, but I've been doing just that for 3 years now and I have one single mango to show for it.  Just one.  So I'm obviously doing something wrong.  I get nice new vegetative growth every year, but no blooms and no fruit.  I'm not fertilizing with nitrogen, and I'm tipping right after the tree across the street (a Hayden, I think) is finished fruiting (late May / early June).  What am I doing wrong??

My prized 2-year-old durian has developed what appears to be a bacterial problem on its leaves.  I have no idea what it is or how to get rid of it, but it's eating the plant up at a crazy pace.  Can anyone identify this problem and advise how to destroy it?

I have a couple of small (6") P. nitida plants that I've grown from seed and I"m concerned that they don't appear to be doing well in the ground.  I'm foliar feeding regularly and have them mulched and regularly watered, but it looks like they are becoming chlorotic.  I really don't want to lose them - they were a pain to germinate.  I have P. edulis (purple and yellow) and P. laurifolia growing with no problems, but P. nitida doesn't seem to like me.  Does this plant require something special? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Persian Lime, New Growth in July???
« on: June 28, 2014, 03:17:01 PM »
total newbie question.  I was just outside looking at my plants and I noticed that my persian lime has a ton of new growth on it.  seems odd to me, since it is so late in the year.  is this normal?  i'm not complaining, mind you, it had leaf borers pretty badly, so i'm really happy to see new leaves, but i think it's strange.
