Tropical Fruit Discussion / Plant purchasing mistakes
« on: January 29, 2023, 10:45:34 AM »
First off there have only been great people offering products and everything on the forum has been amazing and consistently easy/friendly. Ebay has been good to me, not 1 bad experience over years and years. But there really is a bad egg out there and it stinks of bad ethics. Let me introduce to you my worst purchase ever. (Let me know if I'm wrong, that plant doesn't have the opposit leaf growth as a maprang should have)
 Persea Americana Puerto Rico-etsy
Sells mango trees labeled as "gandaria" mango.
The definition of gandaria is a bouea macrophylla. I tried using translate from Spanish but it kept telling me the bouea macrophylla was gandaria. I tried giving the benefit of the doubt but now the small price for me will hopefully make everyone aware of the scam. The seller responds to my accusation of the plant not being a "gandaria" by saying "what did you expect, its a small mango".......it's not very funny but for f-s sake I expected a gandaria lol not a small mango. Grrrrrrr, this shop has to be the most despicable place to purchase a plant. That was my rookie mistake about 8 months ago.
Got any plant purchasing mistakes?? Go ahead and spill the beans........
Have a great day everyone and don't make these mistakes.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Campechiana sapodilla
« on: October 25, 2022, 04:30:16 PM »
Was doing a delivery this morning up in ft myers and stopped by echo. Always a pleasure going there. I got this sapodilla that I can't find any info on. Says sapodilla campechiana and was the last one. The graft looks real nice.
Anyone have any experience with this variety that could give any info of the fruit. Thanks in advance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Multi rootstock grafting
« on: September 13, 2022, 06:35:24 AM »
Good morning all, I am wondering if anyone has made a multi rootstock tree they could share some of the experience. Observed it growing much quicker? Do the  differing genetics in the rootstock help with nutrient uptake? I have lots of seedlings I've been collecting of mango, longan, sapodilla, garcinias, eugenias, and loquats for some experimenting.
If anyone has a picture of a mature multigrafted rootstock tree I'd really appreciate seeing its splendor. I suppose if nobody does I will keep a log and some pictures when the time comes to share the experience amongst the community. Thank you!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Solanum glaucescens (cuatomate)
« on: June 21, 2022, 05:11:21 PM »
Is cuatomate self pollinating? I have a couple plants that get loaded with flowers but never any fruit. They are going on their 2nd summer now. There's a picture of the one that stole my hat.

I planted these about a year ago and the Vietnamese white has some flower buds forming. Is there a way to tell when the flower will open so I don't miss my chance to pollinate the open flower? I see some ants on there and going to do a spray of neem oil, soap and seaweed extract to help fight any aphids plus give some nutrients. Thanks for any tips to help increase chances of fruit set and plant health.

Hi all, I have some Abiu trees I'd like to trade for other fruit trees in the Naples/Collier area. Send a PM if interested. Sorry but not interested in doing any shipping of plants. I'd rather not take a risk in them getting damaged or arriving in rough shape. Thanks for looking!

I have a small lancitilla mango tree not producing yet. My buddy says his tree gets splitting every year from the heavy rains and seems it's common with this mango. I'm wondering if anyone has tried tarpping the ground around the tree to try to block the water from soaking the root system or tried any other measures to get around this problem. Worst case I just top work the tree into another variety. Thanks fellas!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting onto large mango tree.
« on: December 01, 2021, 07:48:05 PM »
I've started grafting onto a large mango tree that is about 1' diameter. It was a very shy producer of mangos that didn't have a great taste so I chopped it down about 4 months ago.so far I've gotten honey kiss and lemon zest grafted to it and just ordered some pina colada scions. I'll post some pictures tomorrow if I get done working before sunset. Just wondering if anyone has done a cocktail trail and gets all the scions to produce fruit. It's more or less an experiment since I have a bunch of grafted trees already. Just started grafting and it is very fun. Thanks for anyone's experience!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rapoza mango nutrient deficiency?
« on: October 27, 2021, 05:50:12 PM »
I've tried to find some pictures to help me identify what it's deficient of and could find anything. It's been about a month since I gave it 3 tablespoons of vigo citrus avocado fertilizer. There's a bit of grass close to it so maybe I just didn't give it enough. It says on florida growing site November and December to not fertilize so I'm hesitant on giving it more food. Any help getting it back on track would be appreciated. Thanks all

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Irrigating with well water
« on: August 13, 2021, 07:38:43 AM »
I included a picture of my redlands white sapote. It's really the only plant that has chlorosis. The drip line hasn't been used for a couple months. Using the well water here in southwest florida has a ph of 8 here. I do have a drip line installed and would like to find a solution to the bicarbonate buildup. So far doing research I've found gypsum and elemental sulfur can be used to buffer the ph by amending the soil on a regular basis. Does anyone use a water de scaler like the limetron so that the bicarbonate can leach out easier? Install a water treatment acid injector? Both descaler and acid injector? Maybe it's best I just convert the driplines to rainwater and plumb in my gutters to multiple collection tanks and re-plumb the irrigation main? Would be nice if there was a method involving less work and more effectiveness. Just trying to find a solution before rainy season ends and I start using it again. Thank for your help in this topic.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help I.D. fruit tree.
« on: August 03, 2021, 06:39:03 PM »
I was told this was an araza fruit (eugenia stipitata) tree when I purchased it back in December. It just doesn't seem like the leaves are the same when I find the pictures online of an Araza fruit tree. Thanks for the help.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango cultivar ID help
« on: July 03, 2021, 08:06:06 AM »
Just trying to put a name to the mango tree we inherited after purchasing our property. I believe the big tree might be a kent but not sure which the smaller exceedingly prolific producing plant might be. The fruit only gets slightly yellow and stays mostly green, smells a bit piney, no fibers, super juicy and delicious the day they fall off in the bag or on the ground. I like to say it tastes like a sweet orange without any sour and no musk. I thought I had tried a lot of mangoes being in Naples 37 years but have never had this type til now.  Thanks for any suggestions!

Citrus General Discussion / Our 1st Pink verigated lemon bud
« on: June 17, 2021, 11:24:19 AM »
This was the 1st plant we installed after purchasing the property last April. We purchased from the blue big box store. It gets imidicloprid soil drench every 3-4 months. Also it gets spray with cold pressed need oil and soap, spinosad, and there's a suffer spray also I just picked up to add in the cycle. I don't do any more citrus needless to say with everything else out there is to grow but still very excited about this plant and the lemons. Anyone have any tips for care when fruiting these plants here in Florida?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Inga species
« on: June 04, 2021, 03:14:59 PM »
Is anyone growing and fruiting any of the ice cream bean trees here in zone 10a, Naples Fl? I went kind of crazy and ordered lots of tropical fruit tree seeds and plants that say will grow in my zone.  I currently have some small 6 month old inga spectabilis and ordered the other varieties as well.
