Avocado seedling fruited
« on: January 14, 2023, 07:02:11 PM »
This tree is a volunteer off a nearby fuerte tree.  Dropped fruit, sprouted, grew and a few years later made a few avocados.  It actually tastes pretty nice and its early.   Seed is kind of big, otherwise it seems decent. The tree is growing like a beast and if it fruits every year then it may be a keeper.  If anyone wants to grow it I will give you scions for free.

Congrats Brad! Looks like a quality cado with big potential. Is it thick or thin skin? Does it turn black when ripe? Would love to throw sum scions on our tree.

Brad, nice looking fruit. I will need to ask for a cutting to add to my tree as well. I grew out a Queen seedling and it took 4 yrs before I got the first fruit and it wasn't a full size fruit yet (cuke, no seeds).

It didnt seem to oxidize quickly but we ate it pretty quick. The peel is medium thin but I just scooped it and didnt try to peel.  I doubt it peels easily but it also doesnt have any grit.  Its got the same skin as fuerte.

I am going to call it "Fornido" because the tree structure extra stout.

Nice, looks like it will take.  Just pinch off those flower buds.

Guys I haven't sent fornido scions yet because I am waiting a bit longer until the fruit is off.  I had one the other day and it was kind of watery so I am probably not going to keep this around because the season is not as early as I was hoping for.

@spaugh

if the tree remains vigorous for you on its own root, it doesnt mean that if you graft it onto a random vigorous rootstock it will keep its vigour..  does it?
or does the scion transfers that ability as well?

What if you graft it onto a less vigorous rootstock, can it improve it?
 or once you graft it, that means the rootstock "takes the lead" from that point onwards?
stuff

If you graft a fuerte scion onto another avocado tree it retains its vigor.
