Fastest Growing Sapodillas?
« on: December 20, 2017, 06:54:27 AM »
Hello everyone,

I heard sapodillas are slow growers. What cultivars grow the fastest and/or good tasting? I need to plant a row of them in the backyard to block the afternoon's sun from hitting the house. I currently have some Alano chicos. Thanks!

I don't know the fastest but Silas Woods and Makok are slower so you can eliminate those.

Once you get an Alano in the ground it grows pretty quick if you take care of it.

I have a couple silas woods and they are growing pretty well. One was top heavy and I pruned
heavy, hopefully next year it will take off like the other one has which is loaded with fruit now.
It has almost ripe fruit, medium fruit small fruit and it is flowering. What a productive tree!
I also have a haysa that is growing well and also starting to have constant flowers and fruit.
It seems like sapodillas are the happiest in the humid hot summer months. They seem to constantly
flush.

I second this..had an Alano in a pot for a couple years and now that it's been in the ground for a couple years its taken off...and at any given moment the tree is flushing, flowering and fruiting all at the same time ...really a workhorse of a tree.

Agree!  Love that tree and fruit.
