Title: Kinzu/Hong Kong/Fortunella hindsii seeds
Post by: franklazar26 on October 28, 2021, 08:45:33 PM
Got an excess of seeds of the all ďrareĒ Kinzu Kumquat. Mine fruited in 1.5 years from seed (in less than favorable conditions). Said to be able to fruit in as little as 8 months. Great for bonsai.

Large handful of fresh fruits (20+ seeds) for $5, $4 shipping to the US.

Hello @franklazar26
May I ask what method you used? I had some problems with hindsii at germination. Btw do you know if your plant is polyploid or diploid?
Thank you very much for that!

Thatís odd, my Kinzu had 100% germination. Some were germinating in the fruit lol. I peeled the husks off the seed and threw them in a baggie with a damp paper towel and they all sprouted very very well. I donít know the Ploidy status of the Kinzu, but being itís a wild species, Iíd assume itís diploid.

Walt, I currently have my last rooted cuttings spoken for, but I was thinking for $20 plus shipping. Cuttings are about 6 months old now. Iíll have more in the future I hope! I do have several seedlings though ranging from 1-4Ē. Pm me, we can work something out for seedlings if you wanted one.

My research indicates the wild Kinzu kumquat is a tetraploid.  There is also a cultivated diploid variety.

It's been 40 years since I've done a chromosome count.  But I could still tell a triploid from a tetraploid.  Being off by a few chromosomes would still be close enough.
The GRIN at Riverside website says that the material they got as tetraploid F, hindsii was in fact diploid by their count.
