I read somewhere that there were attempts to improve them decades ago, but haven't seen any of the results. mine are very tart, very little sweetness.

They are really slow growers. I have a male that's about 15 years old and was probably 9 when it started flowering. I have a female that has been flowering a couple of years now but no fruit yet.

Thanks! I was thinking the same thing. I planted some bulbils a few feet apart. Some in full sun all day and some in bright shade most of the day. The ones in full sun died back, but the ones in shade seem fine. Lesson learned!

I've been growing true yams in my yard for a few years to get a bunch for propagation at our land South of here. Our yard is mostly bright shade or a few hours of sun. They grow really well in part sun conditions, but I see them struggling in more sun down South. Is this normal? Thanks!

Exactly. I'm trying to be as self sufficient as possible. My place is fairly high, no creeks or other flowing water. I'm thinking put it in a small pond in my orchard so it's close to the trees.

my Texanas are from seed. I have one flowering age male and one flowering female. They haven't made. fruit yet, but maybe this is the year. My Virginias are also from seed, from a tree less than a mile from the house. They are getting pretty big, but no flowers yet. D

I actually built a frame on a patio and put our larger potted subs and tropicalish plants/trees in it. No added heat. Ambient dropped to about 15°f there. At least 20 hours below 32. Everything came through. If it had been 3 days the story would have been different, I'm sure.

I have 4 pawpaws. South Texas 29° latitude. They survive, but that's about all. About 8 yrs in ground. Less than 3 feet tall. Summer burns them up. D
