Title: Sumac propagation questions
Post by: Pokeweed on April 25, 2020, 09:32:32 AM
Hi All, I think I want to get some staghorn or smooth sumac started. What is the preferred method? I know they make a ton of seeds, but will cuttings root? Thanks, Dan

They spread naturally like weeds here at my property. They spread underground by sending up new trees from roots. It’s such a flimsy soft tree with hollow limbs that I don’t know if cutting would root. Might root great though since they are vigorous and weedy. I mow them down with mower or weed eater and pull up seedlings/ saplings when I can. Makes a y’all spindly tree quickly. They like to fall over and break under snow and ice.

Maybe root suckers are the way to go. Thanks for this info! D
