Title: An identification request for CitrusPages.
Post by: Sylvain on November 02, 2021, 12:36:50 PM
An identification request from Thailand:
"In Vietnam we have a kind of big citrus fruit but we do not know its scientific name, could you please classify it for us.
Many thanks in advance ”.

I know we've already had this discussion for the Disneyland citrus fruit. But the answer was not obvious...

I don't speak vietnamese but I gathered some info from a reverse image search - these terms popped up
chanh yen
“cây kỳ đà”
and
chanh yen khon lo
Cây "Thanh Yên" is citron tree in their language.

The fruit the woman in 3rd pic is buying seems to be a "Cây bưởi kỳ đà" - https://vietnamnet.vn/vn/kinh-doanh/thi-truong/qua-ky-da-khong-lo-713448.html and also in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y51fUwP3IMI

partial translation: "According to Mr. Bui Van Sang - owner of Muoi Loi flower garden, this is a variety of Yen lemon (also known as Thanh Yen) originating from India, Burma, and the Mediterranean region." - the farmer in this article is the one used in that etsy link above

EDIT: pretty sure its some sort of citron - http://cayhoacanh.com/cay-thanh-yen-huong-vi-kho-quen/

Besides what Millet showed (vietnamese giant lime) I also did a simple reverse image seearch on the 1st image (the 2nd one with the rounded fruit) and one result that popped up was "balang", a sort of iranian citron

Yes it seems its name is Kỳ Đà.
It is called pummelo, lime, lemon or citron.
In some video we can see the leaves. Short not winged petiole and articulate leave. Then it is not a pommelo nor a citron.
Lemons originate in Mediterranean region.
The last possibility is lime...
Now we need a proof.

For what its worth, my Viet colleague read over the article and when asked what variety they specifically refer to it as he said "They just called it "buoi", which is literally called Pomelo in English"

Yes, but the shape of the leaves don't fit this.

"They just called it "buoi"

In my experience it is hard to ask a native speaker about Citrus, as peoples knowledge varies so greatly, especially for more rare types.

It's my guess its possibly a Citron Pommelo hybrid ??
An image of the seeds would be helpful.

Bưởi is pomelo and Bưởi Kỳ Đà is pomelo ky Da.

> In my experience it is hard to ask a native speaker about Citrus, as peoples knowledge varies so greatly, especially for more rare types.
That's true.

> It's my guess its possibly a Citron Pommelo hybrid ??
Don't forget, the leave is articulated and the petiole is not winged. It is nearer from lime or lemon than citron or pomelo.

They also refer to it as a "giant grapefruit", grown out of Tuyen Quang and Hoa Binh: https://vinlove.net/2021/02/13/giant-grapefruit-10-kg-fruit-hanoi-people-scour-to-buy-for-tet/

Can you post an image of the seed ??
Citron seeds are fairly distinct, and Pummelo seeds are fairly distinct so it may give some clues.

I realize that there has been quite a discussion in this already, but for what it is worth every lime seed I can recall seeing was tear drop shaped with no wing. I associate winged seeds with grapefruit, pomello, and oranges. I am thinking that this must be a hybrid citrus.

The seeds don't look like pure Citron seeds, or even Lemon seeds.
Agree, It's more likely a hybrid, but that is expected.
I wonder what this fruit is used for ?? That's a lot of lime / lime juice in one hit.
The Alemow or Colo, Citrus macrophylla is cooked whole in stews in the Phillipines.

It's sweet. On contrary of pomelo they eat the flesh and white part... and skin to make tea. All fruit is used!   :P
