Title: Sweetest pink/red guava, Mexican Cream guava, and guavas in general
Post by: CaliLowWater on November 06, 2021, 02:20:29 PM
Hi guys!

I've been doing some research on guava for a while now. Most of the information I can find seems to say that white guava varieties seem to be sweeter than pink/red varieties. Is that true? I live in San Diego and my neighbor's white variety (she does not know which variety it is, she got an air layer from a colleague years ago) is amazing. Sweet, aromatic, and creamy. Apple shaped, small do medium size, the biggest are the size of a small apple. I have tried many red/pink varities growing here in San Diego, and can't detect any sweetness at all. Yes, they do smell like guava, but no sweetness. And these are fully ripe (yellow outside, soft).

So, which pink/red variety is considered the sweetest one out there, comparable to some of the sweeter white, creamy varieties, like Mexican Cream guava? I think I prefer soft varieties, but would be open to the crunchy ones too.

Finally, does anyone grow a *grafted* Mexican Cream guava? I just bought a grafted one from a local nursery, which got it from La Verne Nursery here in California. There are two fruit ripening on it which are still small, green, smooth skinned, and pear shaped so far (I'll post a picture later). It is supposed to be one of the sweetest varieties out there.  When searching for more information I ran into all kinds of videos and pictures claiming to portray Mexican Cream guavas, but they all look very different. Most of them seem to be round fruit, some have bumpy skin when not fully ripe, some have smooth skin. Many people on Youtube and on various websites admit that they "probably" have a Mexican Cream as they grew their tree from seed or someone gave it to them. Even different online nurseries have different pictures of the fruit of the "Mexican Cream" variety. So, it's very confusing.

So, what does a "true" Mexican Cream guava look and taste like? What's the origin of this variety? I.e. where was it first developed and by whom? Does anyone have any experience with La Verne nursery's "Mexican Cream" guava? Thanks in advance!

My "Mexican Cream" from Lowes is a pink guava.

I got a Mexican cream guava from lowes last year and it had a fruit last year but the rodents beat me to it. It looked/smelled real good. I'll bag them this year if I get any.

Here are two developing fruit that came with the tree when I bought it last week. The tree is already over 6 feet tall.

Do you know which nursery the Home Depot plant is from? If it is there, it should be on the tag that hangs from the plant.  Also, can you tell if yours is grafted? The graft union can be pretty hard to recognize on some plants, though.

My "Mexican Cream" from Lowes is a pink guava.

Hmmm..interesting.  What I noticed when I purchased my Mexican Cream last week was that out of the 7 grafted plants there, there were several plants whose graft was being outcompeted by branches that had sprouted from the rootstock (below the graft union).  The rootstock branches were about 6 feet tall and thick, whereas the grafted branch was spindly and dying. On one plant it was already almost dead and will probably be trimmed by its future owner. So if someone is not good at recognizing that the "Mexican Cream" tree they bought is mostly just rootstock sprouts, they may get this plant and end up with who knows what kind of guava. Of course the nursery may have messed up too...

I'm pretty sure this is a problem affecting a lot of grafted guava varieties out there.

I've heard that the Mexican cream's from the big box stores are either mislabeled or of poor quality.
I find the red guava is better for juicing.  Fron what I understand, barbie pink ruby x Supreme are best pink varieties.

Is this forum simply dead/dying at this point, or is really nobody all that interested in guavas? Has nobody really grown/eaten different varieties of guavas to be able to comment?

Firstly, it seems like people are commenting. What's your beef? Ok, I grow some guava's and they are all pink and none of them are sweet. I would love to find a pink sweet one. I am also looking for a Mexican cream because I also hear it was the sweetest.

Who says I have a beef with anyone? I'm just wondering why there does not seem to be much interest in guavas. I'm talking about comments from people with experience growing these varieties for years. They had not posted yet.  You're first commenter with experience growing the trees for a few years and tasting the fruit.

Did you grow them from seed (if so, seed from which varieties) or did you buy grafted trees of named varieties?

IMHO guavas are great but relatively easy to grow. Many of us love them, however it is not a glamour fruit like cherimoya, lychee, dragonfruit or avocados. A mature tree or two produces more than enough fruit for an entire family. So for some they have lost their prime spot in our gardens.

I am not very knowledgeable on guava varieties bot rest assured there are others that have a depth of knowledge so stay positive and likely one of them will comment.

I get the impression that there simply isn't much interest in guavas.  At least in the US.

It sounds like the places where you can grow them outdoors they just get ravaged by fruit flies.  We don't have those in Pennsylvania so mine are unaffected.  I have tried a few guavas that I've grown and some in India.  They are nice but not as exciting as the sweeter, juicier fruits.

I agree with longranger, it is not as popular as the other fruit trees. Most people probably do have a few, but the white fruit with crunchy texture and not much flavor is not one of my favorites. The only one that I grow and get fruits that are good tasting is called Melon guava from La Verne nursery. I don't think anyone else has grown this one since I posted and got no reply about it. It has a very good guava fragrance, taste is mildly sweet but it has seeds which makes it a little work to eat the flesh.

I agree, but I think one of the major reasons why guavas may not be as popular is because it's actually very hard to find *good*, sweet guavas. Here in San Diego you can find guavas literally everywhere in hispanic and asian neighborhoods. I have Mexican and filipino neighbors all around me, and I can count at least 8 guava trees in 7 different front yards in my immediate neighborhood (i.e. I can see them from my yard). However, only one neighbor has a tree that produces excellent guava. And she got it as an air layered tree from someone else, so they already knew it was good. The fruit and sweet and flavorful and creamy soft. It's like eating a dessert.  Before tasting this fruit I also thought guava is worthless. Some were slightly sweet, but not worth the effort, but the rest was literally tasteless. So, it seems like most people who grow guava here in San Diego grow them from seed.  I can't otherwise explain how 99.99 percent of them produce terrible fruit, yet the trees are very common. Maybe there is a way Mexicans or Southeast Asians eat the fruit that does not require the fruit to have a high sugar content, maybe with Sugar sprinkled on it? Or maybe cooked in an unripe state? I don't know.

So, I think it's just a case of people not having access to good *grafted* or air layered varieties. I'm definitely going to air layer my neighbor's excellent guava tree, but I hope that the La Verne Mexican Cream guava turns out being as sweet and great as it is described online.

Luckily fruit flies don't seem to be a huge problem here in Southern California. :)

There is none that I grow from seed. I purchased all of mine at nurseries or from big box stores except for my egyptian guavas which I bought from Logees. Red guavas are not as sweet i suspect because of the anthocyanins cause them to be sour.

I also own yellow cattley guavas and they are sweet. I am looking for cultivars that produce sweet guava regarless of the color.

Yeah, the crunchy guavas don't sound appealing to me either, but my neighbor's guavas are sweet, soft, and creamy when ripe. The Mexican Cream sounds similar to my neighbor's guava, but we'll see how my Mexican Cream guavas taste once I can eat some fruit off of my new tree.

Hmmm...can't find a "Melon Guava" on La Verne nursery's current stock list. The only grafted varieties they have are:

Beaumont Red
China White
Mexican Cream
White Indian

They also sell "varieties" grown from seed:

Red Malaysian
Tropic Pink
Tropic White

(Not sure why they would sell seed grown guavas as they don't usually grow true....)

Did you get the tree years ago? Was it a grafted tree?

They are pretty similar in sweetness and fruit quality.  The white one I ha e was a la verne tree and labeled "tropical guava" i think.  Im not sure the guavas la verne sells are even grafted, they may all be seedlings.

The dolores and jalisco ones are nice.  There was a ton of hype surrounding them, everyone wanted them but no one is propogating trees.  No idea where frank got them originally, maybe in mexico.

My neighbor claims to have san diego county's largest guava orchard.  She has quite a few different red/pink varieties which tasted quite nice also.  No idea where she got hers, shes been doing this a very long time and was selling them at the farmers market.  She had gotten cancer last I heard from her though and wasn't well so I haven't spoke with her for several years.  But you get the idea, theres plenty of good pink guavas out there.

Exotica or Clausons nurseries in san diego area probably both carry quality guava trees.

One last thing, grafting guavas seems to be more difficult than other fruit trees.  Not sure how the nurseries do it but a lot of people here have had little or no success with it.  So take that for what its worth, they aren't that easy to replicate.

I have a few successful grafts but it took some doing.  A few early takes failed later but I have a couple that are growing well now.
I was able to root a Mexican Cream and it is doing much better than the grafts.  It was rooted after the grafts but has grown much larger, I expect it will fruit next year. True the graft is a branch on a larger tree but it hasn't grown much.

La Verne nursery must be planting seeds for their guava varieties. Either that or their quality control sucks.  I have heard too many stories from people who purchased a tropic white and got a pink guava instead.  Personally, I have purchased a pink and two whites from Home Depot. One of the whites turned out to be a very faint pink fleshed variety, likely a hybrid of white and pink.
My pink guavas and red Malaysian are definitely more acidic than the whites.  I’m skeptical of a guava that tastes like bubblegum.  If Dolores and Jalisco red truly have even a hint of that flavor, someone should propagate on a large scale, rebrand them with some ridiculous name like “Bubblegum Ball” or “Juicyfruit”, and watch the money roll in. Based on the Zill mangos, we don’t even the fruit to taste like the name (Cotton Candy, Peach Cobbler) for it to be success.  Just a superior guava with a exaggerated name will suffice.

My husband loved Hawaiian POG juice when he was younger so looking for a great tasting guava variety to make a homemade version.  I’m trialing eight varieties.

I ordered scions of Mexican cream from a fruit collector in Florida on eBay (seller acc2811) who claimed it was his favorite from his collection.  It rooted easily from cuttings.  There were two fruits close to ripening last week.  We tried one that was a little underripe, second one got eaten by a critter.  It was white and creamy, good fragrance, slightly sweet, softer seeds than the pink I tried a week earlier.  I think it has potential considering plant is young and fruit not totally ripe.  The pink I tried was small, had great fragrance, good flavor but only slightly sweet, with lots of hard seeds.

I have a graft of JF’s Jalisco red that’s starting to bud, so fingers crossed that it makes it.  I will post when I narrow down my selections.

The seedling of Red Malaysian from La Verne gives me tasty fruits this year. Bought it about 4 years ago from Home Depot because of its beautiful deep reddish purple folliage.
The tree gave me fruit on the 2nd year in ground, but the fruits were bland. 3rd year the fruits were bitter, I wonder if it because it grows next to a papaya tree.
Finally this year, the fruits are tasty, little seeds only, very aromatic, with beautiful deep reddish purple color. It is definetely a keeper.
Another seedling guava I purchased is sold as 'Giant Peruvian', but the fruits are not giant, only about the size of fuyu persimmon. They are very tasty though, sweet, creamy, with very little seeds.
I have pictures of the Red Malaysian, but  not the fake 'Giant Peruvian'.
I am looking for an orange flesh guava tree now. Some member here had it, but he said it is now dead.

Seng, the video has very good info, but if you are trying to graft a cutting (no roots) then the grafting method does not apply. In the video it shows one plant in-ground with roots and another smaller plant in a pot and grafting one to the other which will work fine. I think that is how they duplicate/clone the rare red longans. I'm sure it should work well for grafting lychee (small plant) onto a larger tree.

Go to the second page for the guavas. Tropic White and Tropic Pink are clearly listed as seedlings. That would explain why they come out so differently from seed. Mexican Cream is clearly listed as a grafted plant and I can confirm it. For some reason I can't upload pictures to the forum, but I'll try later again. It's clearly a cleft graft, one of the most perfect ones I have ever seen. Compared to that my grafted "Big Jim" Loquat (also a cleft graft) looks like a hurried whack job...but it still worked out fine.

Are you saying you bought seedlings in a 1 gallon container that turned out to be really sweet, or are you saying you have a tree that produces really sweet guava and you are growing two seedlings in 1 gallon containers? How come some fruit are red and some pinkish white inside if they are from the same tree? What variety is the mother tree? Another seedling?

Good info on the La Verne plant list which indicates the ones from seed and ones that are grafted. After looking at my Melon guava label again, it may not be a La Verne since I can only see the name "Melon" printed on the pink label. Here's the label on my tree.

Good info on the La Verne plant list which indicates the ones from seed and ones that are grafted. After looking at my Melon guava label again, it may not be a La Verne since I can only see the name "Melon" printed on the pink label. Here's the label on my tree.

Interesting. This looks like what I see at some Asian grocery stores like 99 Ranch, where they sell fruit trees with similar non-descriptive labels. Do you remember what store you bought it from?

"Are you saying you bought seedlings in a 1 gallon container that turned out to be really sweet, or are you saying you have a tree that produces really sweet guava and you are growing two seedlings in 1 gallon containers? How come some fruit are red and some pinkish white inside if they are from the same tree? What variety is the mother tree? Another seedling?"

CaliLowWater, over two years ago, I bought four seedling guava plants, each was 1 gallon. This year each plant is producing fruits, which have more seeds, sweeter, but much smaller than the parent fruits.  The fragrant was as strong as the parent fruits.  They are of unknown variety.  It is most likely from India.  The owner is most likely from India because of their name and look, and I saw a few plants that are known in India.  The picture depicted the mother plant fruits in various stages of ripeness. I was trying to see what ripening stages that the fruit can be eating. I sold two plants already.  I keep two plants to evaluate to see if the fruits can be bigger.

I had another nice size Melon guava on my tree which I bagged. Should have picked it yesterday, now the entire fruit with bag is missing. Probably the raccoons or squirrels got it.

Here's the photo I took a day before it went missing.

Here's my white crunchy guava, has seeds, no taste last year. I may let this fruit hang until it falls off to see if it gets any flavor.

Does anyone recognize this fruit ?
Is this the Vietnamese white guava ?

One of my other neighbors (not the people with the guava grove) has some guava trees.  The grandma is around 90 and tends to the fruit trees.  She has  one that looks like that one and says its vietnmese.  I think they are super bland, not something I would grow.  I think she eats it crunchy  :P

sc4001992, usually, the Vietnamese fruit variety is larger than that.    I bought a 1 gallon plant over a decade ago from Exotica.  Steve name it, 'Best Ong'. I assume it is a seedling of fruit from Ong nursery.

sc4001992, it is mildly sweet.  Some fruits are crunchy, while some are soft (most likely pollinated by near by plants).  No fragrant at all.  Because of these characteristics, we love them. We can eat more without getting sick of the smell or concern about sugar level.

Some of the fruits are roundish and some are pear shaped, so I assume there's some variation? Also, is there even such a thing as "Mexican Cream"? It does not seem to be a common variety name in Mexico. I did some research and Mexican sites keep mentioning "Guayaba de Calvillo" as the sweetest variety in Mexico. I understand that Calvillo is a municipality and not a variety, but that's what that guava goes by I guess.  Did you hear about it? How does it taste? Given that a lot of Guavas imported to the US come from there (Aguascalientes), could the "Mexican Cream" be one of the "Guayaba de Calvillo"?

Also, do you think your Jalisco Roja or Dolores are as sweet or sweeter than Mexican Cream?

Today, I gave a few pounds of Thai Jumbo wax apple to a neighbor nearby.  In return, I got a few pounds of guava.  He said the plant was brought from Mexico.  It has intense sweetness and acidity, even after he over water the tree.  The fruit is not too crunchy, it is not soft.  It is kind of supple like a hard Fuyu persimmon.  It has no fragrant. It is very productive.
This is the best guava I have eaten.

I have done two air layer of the plant.  He will get one, and I will get one.  It is over a year now, and the aired layer start to grow root. Hopefully, it will work, so I can have the plant. I will try to grow from seeds as well.

Since the cutting will be fresh the graft should work fine.

Yes, it is difficult to graft the guava. If you can get hardwood it is best, but semi-hard is ok as well. Just graft it immediately and watch out for any mold on the scion. Seanny has an interesting method of grafting guava and he has a high success rate.

I purchased a larger tree (10 gallon pot) a few years ago but no fruit since I cut most of the branches to graft onto it. I noticed this tree has leaves that are much smaller than the white guava.

Diana, I have a seedling orange flesh guava (they say) but it is very small and in 1 year it has not grown at all. If it grows up and has orange fruits then I will post it.

Great! Looking forward to see how your seedling turn out, Kaz.
Let me know if you want cuttings from my Red Malaysian or 'Giant Peruvian'. These trees are still young, so maybe another year before I can airlayer them.

Yes Kaz, please keep us posted, the only orange guava I’ve seen was from seeds listed here https://www.seedshuntershop.com/store/products/guava-var-orange-pulp-psidium-guajava-var-orange-pulp looks totally awesome.

I purchased a larger tree (10 gallon pot) a few years ago but no fruit since I cut most of the branches to graft onto it. I noticed this tree has leaves that are much smaller than the white guava.

Beaumont Red is supposed to be a commercial Guava grown in Hawaii and primarily for making juice. It is described on its label as "mildly sweet and acidic" or something like that. (I saw the plants when I bought my Mexican Cream a few weeks ago).  "Mildly sweet" is always a warning sign for me. But it makes sense that this variety is used for juicing as one can always add sugar in the process and some acidity is welcome too in most cases (like orange juice).

I also read a report on another website that said that it is too sour and the author was going to get rid of it.

Here is a question though...during my research I ran into JF's posts saying that his Jalisco Red guava had a brix reading of 21, which would mean it is super sweet. Yet, nobody in this thread said that they tasted it and found it to be the sweetest pink/red guava out there. So, anyone with first hand experience? Brad (spaugh), do you actually have this variety or did you just taste it somewhere?

JoeP450,

there are a few crunchy seedless green guava.  I have another plant with round leaves.  The fruits are perfectly round and less productive.  I got that aired layer plant from my neighbor a few months ago.  Hopefully, it will fruit next year. I also has another oval shape seedless, it died on me last year.  There are also pear shape seedless as well.

There is also another crystal that is having a few seeds, and its leaves are round.  I think Xshen has that one.  Xshen also has Thai seedless and Taiwanese seedless.

I grafted the Crystal seedless from xshen. The leaves are are not round, still more elliptical shape with a point. I also have the seedless (trianhthy)grafted and it's leaves are almost round. One more small seedless plant I have has very round leaves (no points). Not sure if the two seedless variety I have is the same or are different varieties. When I get a fruit on it I should be able to compare. The True Seedless guava (trianhthy) is a strong grower, branch looks thick and leaves are big so maybe next year I will see fruit.

Seng, your red seedless guave video shows a pretty large fruit that would be nice. Do you know if the taste of the fruit is sweet and if the flesh is hard or smooth. From the video it looks like a crunchy fruit.

JoeP450, yes the color is deceiving, I have seen a few photos online that shows more of the orange color flesh but it was from the person/place I purchased my plant and didn't want to use their photos.

nullzero,

Ok good to hear more than a few people mentioning the Crystal seedless tastes good, I have a small graft on my tree. What is the Emperor guava and is it here in the USA?

I will need to visit Exotica and checkout the Diamond guava since I keep hearing he has many hard to find varieties. I did graft (but not sure if it will take yet) a white flesh guava that snowjunky said is a very sweet seedling plant called Steve's Super Sweet (SSS). This seedling was from Exotica.

i had ate something similar to this around two years ago, the fruits were the size of big plums slightly pear shaped. The colour thought, it looks like pink to me too so ....
I have three seedling plants which are big now so hopefully next year i will see some fruit on them.
I also have three seedling plants from a bigger fruited ,pink guava, probably similar to apple guava. Two of them set fruit this year ,but due to the colder temps in the gh they are not sizing at the moment.
I had fruit this year from two catley guavas , both the yellow and the red varieties.
I liked the red strawberry guava the better, had more sweetness, very good flavour with a small amount of seeds per fruit. Fruits were the size of a medium large round plum. Both the peel and the inside just melted into the mouth, the peel had a slight piney flavour which i very much liked.
The yellow one, generally called lemon guava was kinda bland compared to the other.

I have a Diamond guava seedling and Waimea red seedling from Steve at Exotica. I have tried a crystal guava from my friends tree it was slightly better then Diamond but did not do a taste test head to head. If you only plant 1 guava can't go wrong with Diamond and it is easier to source due to Exotica propagating it.

Have you tried the Jalisco red or the Delores seedless from JF? I hear they are very sweet.

I've lived in Taiwan before, and I ate tons of guava over there. People sell guava on the street as snacks that anyone can grab anytime.
As far as I remember, Crystal is good, but not creamy at all. It is more to crunchy type. I don't remember eating Emperor, maybe I did but just did not find it memorable.
The most tasty guava in Taiwan for me was Milk guava. Yes, they call it Niu Nai Pa Le in Mandarin, translated as Milk guava.
It is not creamy nor crunchy, just in between. Not super sweet, but enough sweet with no tartness or any other aftertaste. It has few seeds with very sweet soft inner part.
I actually been trying to find this variety here, but no one ever heard of it.

Palingkecil, I will need to send you one of my Melon guava fruit next year when it ripens. I think it tastes good, smooth, not crunchy, strong fragrance, but it has many seeds. Since I have some Mexican Cream plants now and one tree has 1 fruit so I will be able to taste it in a month to see if it tastes the same as my Melon guava or better.

The picture of your Melon guava looks mouthwatering, Kaz.
I tried to find Melon guava at Lowes and Home Depot, but seems like no one has it anymore. You got lucky!
My friend has Jalisco Red, but this year is only the first year it bears fruit, so he said it just taste so so, he prefers his Ruby Supreme.
But I suspect the fruit quality will improve as the tree gets older.
If next year my fake Peruvian guava bears more fruit, I will send some to you. The fruit tastes so much like Mexican cream, but bigger in size.
This year I only get 2 fruits, because lack of watering. I never fertilize any of my guava trees, do you fertilize your guava?

Sounds good. I have not tasted the Mexican Cream nor the Peruvian so it will be good to try them. I have 4 Mexican Cream plants now since so many people say the ones they purchased turned out to be a different variety. I hope one of the 4 plants turns out to be the correct variety. I don't really fertilize any of my fruits trees, except maybe one time in the summer if I remember. Most of my trees other fruit trees are all older so they seem to do well with just watering it once a week.

Today I tasted my first Mexican Cream guava on a grafted plant I purchased this year. I was disappointed with the taste of the fruit. It had a mild fragance of guava, fell off the branch when it got a little yellow color skin. I let it sit on the counter for another 3 days and it turned to light yellow color all over the fruit. Fruit looked nice, smelled good, flesh texture was firm but not fully creamy. The flavor/taste to me was just ok, had some mild sweetness but that was it.

My Melon guava in comparison had more flavor/taste than this Mexican Cream guava. I hope the other plants I have will have some fruits next year and maybe the taste will improve. I'm pretty sure I have the real Mexican Cream guava from the nursery (4). I will post a few photos of the one fruit I had on my tree.

Hey Kaz, my SSS guava is short for Steve's Seeded Surprise because I was surprised it was not seedless.  Long story short I bought it from Steve at Exotica as a seedless guava he called Lua Ranch.  Except Steve didn't tell me that it's a seedling, not a clone.  So I was unpleasantly surprised when the first guava was full of seeds :(  When you buy a named variety from Exotica Nursery, make sure to ask Steve if it's a seedling or clone.

Anyway this story has a good ending because the SSS guava turned out excellent.  It produces fruit two or three times a year.
The guavas are very sweet and flavorful with some acidity when they are still hard and crunchy like an apple.
They are even sweeter when they ripen and soften a bit.  The flavor can be intense.
The guavas vary in size and shape from egg size to orange size and round, oval and pear shapes.
The tree is very vigorous and has big leaves.  It is also a bit more cold hardy than my other guavas trees.

The La Verne Nursery's Mexican Cream guava is sweet and very fragrant, but tiny fruit and unproductive.  The fruit sometimes has pink blush in the white/yellow flesh.  It is definitely different than the medium size Mexican Cream fruit I've seen on youtube and some websites.  I'm not sure why they would graft and propagate something so unworthy.

I've grown Peruvian and Ong(from Ong's Nursery) guava.
Peruvian is productive, but bland.  The fruits are small/medium and soft.  I chopped it down after 5 years.
Ong is productive, but bland and watery.  The fruits are big and crunchy, but prone to deformation, cracking and rotting in Phoenix.  I chopped it down after 5 years also.

I have two Crystal guavas.  Crystal Seedless from Taiwan is bushy, low vigor, has normal shaped leaves and sets fruit well.
The other Crystal guava is probably the same as the Seedless guava according to Kaz.  It's from Southeast Asia somewhere.  It has rounded leaves, but doesn't set fruit well.
Both are supposed to be very sweet and crunchy.

I found the best tasting guavas to be from Taiwan. Emperor and Crystal guava are elite selections and some of the best, if you can find a good air layer. Also Diamond guava from Exotica is very good.

Those Taiwanese are the best fruit breeders.

Here in Florida guavas are not as popular as say mangoes because they're very susceptible to nematodes, and most soils are sandy and infested.

Most guavas here are air layers, not grafts. The smaller less sweet varieties are said to be more nematode-resistant, I'm trying the one that's supposed to be very resistant (cattleyanum) but it hasn't fruited yet. If it's not tasty I will just keep it as rootstock. Had a strawberry guava that was small, completely unimpressive taste but it died years ago, but it can also be due to shady spot it was growing in.

I grow several varieties and have posted tasting videos on them on my youtube channel. links below. Have been fruiting Barbie Pink and Tikal for several years, Tikal is less sweet of the two but generally they're very similar. Barbie Pink is huge and fruits pretty much all year round for me, no fruit flies in winter months so no need to bag, but in summer starting April-May they're ravaged and cannot be left without bagging. but the fruit is also a bit smaller and sweetness is less intense in winter, but sometimes there are exceptions.
(https://i.postimg.cc/TY2pkSm3/IMG-4145.png)  (https://i.postimg.cc/Pr6N04zz/IMG-4146.png)
My Barbie Pink is a happy tree, growing in very calcareous soil that we were dumping to that area from pond digging, never thought it would be good for anything but the parent tree that was growing in "better" soil died, and this air layer has trippled in size its first year, and is going nuts. My wife is in love with Barbie Pink taste and doesn't want any other guavas, lol, to her it's the sweetest and best-tasting one because she says it tastes like strawberry cream from her childhood, extremely aromatic.  For that size fruit, the seed component is not that bad and the seed containing core is actually the creamiest and sweetest part. I wouldn't scoop it out like Kaz did in his photo  :D
I like guavas with a little bit of acidity and crunchiness and white varieties are more appealing to me, I procured a couple of very good varieties but air layers have been dying on me for some reason. So last 2 years I haven't been able to propagate.
Here are the tasting videos on different guava varieties from my garden, with the most impressive tasting fruit:

That's great Kaz.   Guavas are hard to graft.
I only succeed when the rootstock is push out new growth vigorously.
The scions have to be healthy and is best when there are new buds forming.

If I recall right he said it’s a seedling from Mexican cream, which confuses me how the pinkish flesh, but this was a legit guava. My tasting notes were sweet flavor with some watermelon notes, hardly noticeable bitter/skin tannin.

I know the quoted post is old but I have a 1 year guava plant I grew from seed of the orange variety from seeds hunter shop. Its 2'-3' tall and should fruit next year. Ill be sure to post pics of the fruit. I can say the leavers are definitely red so Im hopeful.

Those really red ones, and dolores seedless look awesome. Would love to graft those up! Lately I have been super impressed with long leaf guava psidium striatulum. It is the most intense guava flavor I've had and has low seed count. It's a smaller fruit than tropical guava but enough for me. Really easy grower and heavy producer.

Brad, ok, maybe he may have grated both with Jalisco Red which would be good. Frank said in his post the fruit has seeds, but it has the highest brix, ranges from 22-37.

Take photo of your fruit, outside of the fruit, then once you cut it in half. I hope yours is the Jalisco Red (Rojos).

37 Brix for a guava?!  Is that a typo? Screenshot from JF's post says 22-24 brix range.

Brad, would you say the Jalisco is the sweetest guava you've tasted?

K-Rimes, glad to hear the Psidium striatulum is tasty.  I got a couple seedlings from Wildlands Farm & Nursery several months ago.  How long did it take for your plant to start fruiting?

It's sweet but never near 30.  They don't make much juice so it's hard to get a good reading.  My taste buds are saying 20 brix max.  The fruit isn't dry, it just doesn't drip when you squeeze it.

The meter said 15 but it was hard to get any liquid out of it.

I'm having trouble uploading pics today.  I'll try again later.

This trees produces more than my whole family could ever eat.  I think 1 guava tree is more than enough.  I guess I could start freezing it and make smoothis out of it later.

We have mangos and cherimoyas coming in at the same time.  Those don't ever get wasted.  Most of the guava end up on the ground and my chickens or that rodents eat them.

Yeah, if we were growing guavas just to eat fresh, one tree would probably be enough.

We're going to use to them for processing.  We have a manufacturer's license, so want to experiment with beer, kombucha, kefir, ciders, jams, etc.  We have good brewers and kitchen staff to help develop recipes.

That'll be the fun part when we have a variety of fruits to start experimenting.

Wish I had mangoes and cherimoyas to harvest, working on it! ;D

K-Rimes, glad to hear the Psidium striatulum is tasty.  I got a couple seedlings from Wildlands Farm & Nursery several months ago.  How long did it take for your plant to start fruiting?

Janet

I also got them from Nate at Wildlands. That was, if I recall correctly, maybe 2 years ago? It was in a 15g till last week and I just plopped it into a 20g even laden with fruit. I would guess plant is about 3 years old now. They are fast fruiters I'd say. It flowered last year but didn't set. It gets so weighed down with fruits that it went from being upright to flopped over even with thinning, but it was always pretty floppy from the start. I have it staked up.

It's really strong, almost stinky guava flavor. Can't really express how much better I like it than a standard tropical like cream or pink, but I have not tried any of these higher end types. I do have an orange'y white flesh tropical and it's good, but not great.

Very low effort plant. I put one in at the office too, 1g directly in the ground.

Janet, the brix from Frank had two different mentions, one in 2018 said brix of 22-24, but the later one in 2019 said 37.

Brad, your fruits looks like Jalisco to me, I hope so. Nice photos and video. Is your daughter eating the seeds of the guavas?

Yes she eats the whole thing (with seeds), she just ate 2 of the guavas.

Our fruit seems more light in color than franks pictures.  The jalisco and dolores both look that way and taste the same to me.  But they are both pink, not red.

K-Rimes, sounds perfect, look forward to tasting it.  Do you like acidic, sour fruits?  Have you tasted the Cas guava? That's another one I want to try.

Brad, awesome taste test video, I was asking myself the same question as Kaz, seeds don't bother her?

Kaz, keep us posted on how the Jalisco Rojo tastes from your tree when it fruits for you.

I am pretty much open to anything. I eat pitangatubas out of hand so that says something about sour, I guess. I have a cas guava and myrtoides but haven't had any fruit from them. Cas was going ok till a deer got to it. I have a few others rare guavas which I can't recall the name of. I'm a big fan of guavas for 9b, bulletproof pretty much. Have a psidium guiensis and the "araza banana" from Marcos in Argentina that were awesome this year "skittles guava", seriously tastes like skittles candy.

K-Rimes, I want skittle tasting guavas!  Looked at Marcos' seed list and couldn't figure out which one you have.  Let me know if you have seeds or plants to sell in the future.

Brad, do you have any of the seedless guava varieties?  I have a crystal seedless, but it's the slowest grower for me and still hasn't bloomed or set fruit.

I am airlayering a white, sweet guava right now that is to die for. I think it is just called tropical white. It makes fruit the size of a softball, intensely tropical smelling, sweet and creamy. I love to eat them after they are chilled. I sold most of the airlayers to City Farmer's nursery about a month and a half ago. I have a small handful left on the tree. If the ants don't destroy them I will be able to pot them up, lol. Luckily, I transitioned on to a pot at my place earlier in the year. Its leafing out quite well. I tried to root cuttings from the tree several times and had not success. I am growing lots of seedlings from the mother tree and plant to do approach grafts this spring. I just collected like a half a cup of seeds from fruit this week so if you are local I can give you some seeds. I am in San Diego.

I also have that white guava.  They are good ones.  The pink one maybe slightly better but they taste pretty similar. The white ones get bigger but I always thinned it.  The pink trees from frank are further from the house and never get thinned so the fruit are not as large as they could be.  Branches are also breaking from the load on Frank's trees.

"Araza banana" which I believe is Psidium Guinieense or an SP - Janet I can just send you some near ripe fruit. Easier than seeds. Leave on the counter for a few days and should soften up.

Long leaf guava interior, very pink, seeds kind of soft. Would be a decent guava to try to hybridize with tropical?

I have a Guava seedling that I planted in 2019 as a 1 gal. It is from Cal-Poly Pomona's farm store/nursery. I had emailed them after buying it during one of their tropical fruit sales (for $5!) and asked about it's origin. This is what I was told, it "was a discovery by Prof emeritus, Dr. Greg Partida. Propagated by seed. Has a fragrance of strawberries, not super pink flesh."

It has not fruited yet, and has had some leaf drop each Winter and is about 3ft tall in bush form.

Can you experienced Guava masters guess if I might see some flowers (and what time of year) this coming year? How long are you waiting for fruits from your young Guavas? I am in Riverside County CA for weather reference. I'm dying to taste it. I haven't seen anyone else mention acquiring one from Cal-Poly.

Brad, do you know if either of your guava trees have some dark red/pink colors on the stem and leaves of the new growth?  If it does, then it might be the Dolores.

I found some photos of the cuttings before grafting and noticed this color on the cuttings.

Definitely not a 20 or 30 brix.  Maybe a 15.

This is the first fruit off a guava tree I bought from Guava King on eBay a couple years ago.  It doesn’t match any of the descriptions he has but I’m happy to have it.  It’s moved up to our first place spot.

Fruit is large and completely seedless, texture is denser and firmer than our other guavas, more like a pear.  Sweet with a balance of tartness and a nice light guava flavor.  Scott doesn’t like the skin on some guavas, but he liked this one.  I have a couple that have a stronger tropical guava flavor but for overall eating quality, especially being seedless, we like it best so far.

Does anyone recognize this variety?

Galka, thanks for the info on source for your trees.

Janet, that is a large fruit and seedless so that's a winner. I hope my grafted seedless guava from Trianhthy and Crystal seedless from Xshen grows faster so I can check out the fruits. Both of their fruits are large. The shape of your fruit looks similar to Trianhthy's true seedless guava.

Janet, I doubt your guava from Guava King (ebay) is the same source as the one from Trianhthy but the fruit looks similar.

Good news that his guava is very good tasting and large. I also purchased a few different varieties from Guava King a year or so ago. The trees that survived looked like the fruits were different for the box store (Home Depot, Lowes) plain varieties. One tree I got is his Crunchy Pink, supposed to be seedless, hope the fruit gets as big as yours.

I wonder if it's still listed online and what pictures he is using. Lots of people have been complaining about him posting random pictures of guava varieties and then sending something else.

Ok, so last year in May I bought an airlayered Ruby x Supreme guava tree from a local nursery in a three gallon container. It came with a 2-3 flower buds. I decided to put the tree in the ground immediately and try to get some fruit the first year. It worked, and while the original flowers turned into fruit and continued growing, the tree grew a bunch over the summer and started producing even more flowers.  So I got fruit in October (the original flowers that came with the tree when purchased) and I have been getting even more fruit since the last day of January.

The fruits are great! Currently they are sweet and juicy with a hint of sour in the rind when not super duper ripe and soft (fruit gets sweeter as it gets riper). The combination is pretty perfect actually. I am very surprised how good the winter fruit tastes. Can't wait for the summer fruit to ripen this year. This one is definitely a keeper, and I am not even continuing to look for sweet red varities anymore.

Here's the thing though....the fruits are huge!  The original fruits in October were between 220-336g, which seemed at the upper end of the documented weight range for Ruby Supreme, but the current crop has been weighing 454 - 516g!  I have never heard about Ruby Supreme being this big and heavy. Of course there are smaller fruit in the tree, too, but there are actually a lot of big ones like that. Also, the fruits are quite round like Barbie Pink.  So, what do you guys think? Is this Ruby x Supreme 6-29? See pictures below.  The summer fruit had almost no seeds and the fruit seemed a bit darker (or maybe it's just the camera). The giant winter fruits still don't have super many seeds and the seeds are pretty soft and chewable. Nobody even notices them...not much anyway. The apple and orange in the comparison picture below are *giant* apples and oranges...as big as they get. Medium and small sized apples and oranges would look tiny next to the guava.

Grafting guava using normal methods have failed for me.  So I use a modified method as shown in this video starting at 5:39.  You do not need to understand Vietnamese language.  I used this method to graft cherimoya, atemoya, guava, and even fig.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yq9A1IvCx7A

Recently I bought a "Queen Improved" Guava from Mimosa Nursery online. It appears to be the same method as demonstrated in the video. The few cleft grafts I have tried on guavas have not worked out

Cleft grafts on guava work well only in the spring for me when I have a strong rootstock that is pushing out new growth and healthy scions that are either dormant or buds just starting to swell.  I always cover my difficult grafts with a punctured ziplock bag in Phoenix.  I would say the success rate is about 2 out of 3.

CenCalArt, have you tasted any of your guavas that you grow?
If you have tasted some, which one do you like the most?

I've heard that the Mexican cream's from the big box stores are either mislabeled or of poor quality.
I find the red guava is better for juicing.  Fron what I understand, barbie pink ruby x Supreme are best pink varieties.

In my experience they are both mislabeled AND poor quality.

Ok, nice. Can I ask you which one you liked better, the Ruby supreme or the Barbie pink ?

Barbie pink is the one I like more but my kids like the ruby supreme they mostly go for the small fruits.
I’m just happy to share the experience with them like my folks did with me. They get mind blown when they see the so many different varieties.

During the 20+years that I have been collecting and studying Psidium guajava. It is one of my favorite childhood fruits. Photos are my top pick varieties that I like the most.

Vietnamese white guava is crunchy white flesh with semisoft /soft seeded, sweet and sour balance, keep good flavor even in wet weather. Photos show average size fruit. It can get larger under right condition. Some fruit can have red flushing skin due to chill hours. This one is the oldest variety.
There are other types of Vietnamese guava that were grown from seeds have not been evaluated yet.

Taiwanese white guava is crunchy white flesh seeded,  sour/sweet,  keep good flavor even in wet weather.

The pink flesh varieties were grown from seeds. I selected many varieties from seedlings and pick those that I like the most.
1.  Honey kiss is one of the sweetest guavas that I have in my collection, keep good flavor even in wet weather.
2.  Lovely pink
I have more seedlings pink flesh that have not been evaluated yet.  One of them may be the #2 in line over the Lovely pink. This one, I only tried its fruit just one time.

Last photo is crystal seedless, crunchy white flesh, may have 1 or 3 seeds in some fruit. Base on reviews of seedless varieties from other collector, then this one is one of the top picks. For me I just grow this variety for fun. I like the seeded variety better, especially the one with semisoft /soft seeded.

Those really red ones, and dolores seedless look awesome. Would love to graft those up! Lately I have been super impressed with long leaf guava psidium striatulum. It is the most intense guava flavor I've had and has low seed count. It's a smaller fruit than tropical guava but enough for me. Really easy grower and heavy producer.
would you know if it's more or less cold tolerant compare to P. cattleianum? ^^

CenCalArt, I have a couple of guavas that I don't see on your list. I have a mexican cream, Queen guava (this one you can get at Mimosa nursery), Thai seedless, and golden honey moon. How is your peruvian white? I've never hear of that one.

hammer524, have you gotten any fruit off of your queen guava? I recently bought this one too. It sounds good but I haven't tasted it yet.

GrowerA, where did you obtain that honey kiss guava?

There are many varieties and I'm on the look out for the best ones. Kind of addicting haha.

I have not had success growing the low vigor Taiwan / Asian guava varieties such as crystal, queen, century, pearl in the ground in Phoenix AZ.
Seedling Asian guavas and fast growing guavas like ruby supreme and Mexican cream grow very well for me.
The low vigor guavas start to suffer above 110F.  They do ok in pots with some afternoon shade, so don't like the desert soil here as well.
