Went out today to assess yard post storm Nicole, noticed one of my salaks is flowering. Seems of all the things this took a beating as the long fronds catch the wind while shallow weak roots… if planting out where high winds are a concern place in protected area 👍
Wondering if these are male or female flowers or still too soon to tell?

Originally bought these seeds from Han sun as “honey salak” and have a few growing out in my yard now, hoping to try this fruit someday and todays news reignites the hope!

Very awesome, good luck & hope you get tons of fruit. Would be hard to determine plant sex without comparison of other flowers. I suppose if you measure each individual flower in your garden, you may be able to determine the gender with the male flower being thinner and longer, but I'm sure it'll flower soon enough and that'll be the dead giveaway.
Have some Red Salak coming in soon, hoping they're all the hype.

I remember seeing the salaks you had. Very nice to see them one step closer to fruiting.
I think salak is a great fruit after getting to taste the wallichiana one.
And after talking to some other collectors, it seems they are even better as wallichaina is not the best tasting one.
Plus, they make a good hedge!
I may want to try them again up here. The thorns are scary though and I only want the bali one that's self pollinating so I don't die everytime I go into the greenhouse lol.

I believe that is a male flower on a dwarf variety. I have that one. It’s quick to produce and the fruits, while a tad smaller, are pretty good. The classic Javanese salak has much narrower, hanging male flowers. In the case of this one the male inflorescence is thicker and more similar to the female. What tells me that it is male is that the inflorescences are in a group.
Salak flowers more readily if you remove any dead material and even keep ahead of frond removal so that the flowers will be more exposed. When you see a female flower that is receptive then find a male with fresh pollen, take it and tap on the female and leave it there.

Wanted to add this photo I found in a research paper that may be helpful for those like myself who are less familiar growing salak outside of its native region. Based on the photo I’m am convinced my salak is producing male flowers due to lack of the “hairs” that seem characteristic of female flowers.

It’s typical that males are the first to start flowering, hang in there.
