If you are not opposed to chemical control, Hi-Yield Improved Slug & Snail Bait works well. It contains Metaldehyde.

When fully ripe, it becomes yellow, soft and aromatic. It is sweeter than white Asian guavas but not very sweet.

3
Is pakistan guava same as arabian guava?

They are different.  Variety I have is called Pakistan Larkana variety.  It becomes yellow and soft when ripe.  Here is how it looks:

Kaz is correct that mentioned Asian guavas are not very sweet. They are mildly sweet and crunchy. I have had crystal and pearl guavas. Crystal was a tad bit sweeter than Taiwan century but slow to grow and died on me.  I still have pearl guava but like Taiwan century better. I have grafted Pakistani yellow guava and Ahmedabadi guava to Taiwan Century

There's also a new variety of guava that is large, white, and softens up when it is ripe. It is called Kilo guava. I myself haven't tried it, but I've heard that it a top tier variety. Sounds like what you are looking for. Mimosa Nursery carries it:

Kilo white has been around for a while. It is just a large variety of white crunchy Asian guava. I had it but ended up removing it as flavor was not as good as other Asian guavas e.g. Taiwan Century

Most (if not all) Manila mango trees found in commercial nurseries (home depot, lowes etc) are laVerne grown seedlings.

Vast majority of mangoes available in the nurseries here are Florida grown with the exception of Manila mangoes. Many people have grafted better varieties on to manila rootstocks and they seem to do better. However, even these mangoes have issues with constant flowering which affects their growth. It seems that locally grown seedlings of better varieties may do better. If you want to grow some thing, it will be best to try to grow vigorous varieties which are fungal disease resistant e.g. sweet tart.

Are Dream anona scions still available? Thanks

Sorry, cannot ship. Local pick up in Irvine ONLY

Open to trade for Mango varieties which do well in CA

Pearl Guava - $150
About 5-6 foot tall from top end of pot
Grafted. Has been fruiting. Fruits are medium size, Oval with thick white crunchy pulp

Ruby Supreme - $100
Grafted, Purchased from Champa Nursery
~4.5 feet tall, in 7G pot
Has been fruiting. Fruits are medium size with pink inside

Thai Pink $50
Seedling from Exotica nursery, 3-4 year old
Has not fruited for me but was told that is a popular variety with pink sweet pulp

Taiwan Century Guava Air Layer - $30
Oval shape, light green color, uneven surface, with medium fiber amount. Very juicy and crisp.

Pakistani Yellow Guava airlayers from my larger tree - $40 (x2)
It is similar to yellow Egyptian guava
Pear shaped to elongated fruit with sweet pulp.
I suspect that it requires pollination as some fruits are seedless but don’t taste as good. Other fruits have seeds and taste much better

Large Asian Guava seedlings – Likely China White
Have two, larger for $40, smaller for $20
Larger is a 4 year old seedling which has been fruiting
Fruits are green with white inside, crunchy and mildly sweet
Fruits from mother tree are large up to 2 lbs. Mine have not been that large most likely from being in pot

Allahabad White
2 year old seedlings grown from seeds from a forum member
Have not fruited for me.
Have two in one gallon pots, $20 each

Great. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I am growing over 25 varieties of mangoes and evaluating which ones have high and medium vigor. It's a long-term learning process. Listed below are my estimated high vigor varieties. But keep in mind this may change with more time and experience growing. Note: all of my mango trees are on Manila or Ataulfo rootstock. No turpentine due to lack of vigor. The soil is sandy loam with 10% pumice. No heavy or clay soil as this reduces the growth rate and vigor.

I do everything I can to increase vigor and that starts with the soil type then moves up to the rootstock and finally the cultivar. All are very important to maximize mango tree growth in my opinion.

1.  Cotton Candy - Just moved to a larger #25 pot and thus far is growing very well. The root completely filled the smaller #15 pot after only one year.

2.  Fruit Punch - Every graft I have done has grown well. Even the 2022 graft onto my Lemon Zest mango tree is trying to hold fruit. Will remove the Fruit Punch fruit to focus on vegetative growth for the young graft.

3.  Guava - My 2020 Guava graft is now over 1.5" thick and holding numerous fruit. Appears to be vigorous.

4.  Lemon Zest - After a few years in the ground this takes off vertically.

5.  Orange Essence - Appears to be a strong grower. (Orange Sherbet is of Medium Vigor but a more attractive tree.)

6.  Peach Cobber - Every PC graft I have done has grown well.  So far so good. I also have fruit set from a 2020 graft.

I need more time to ascertain with other cultivars have vigor. This list almost certainly change with more experience growing mango trees in California.

@Johnny Eat Fruit: Which one would you consider to be "high vigor" at your location?

Picked up Alphonso mango shipped from India from Indian store. Beautiful colored mangoes Excellent tasting may be little fibers.
Thinking about growing them. Anyone like to grow? it won’t be an Alphonso, just  to try and may be to top work later.

Usually these mangoes are irradiated and seeds don't sprout!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Why is my Persimmon dying?
« on: May 15, 2023, 07:51:31 PM »
That was my first thought. So I had dug up about 12 inches down and it was still wet (not soaking wet).  Temperature has been mostly in 50s and 60s here.
Can still try to water more - nothing too loose!
Thanks for your suggestion

I will also go with Lakers
