Tropical Fruit Discussion / Central Florida grafting seasons
« on: March 01, 2024, 10:51:52 PM »
Howdy everyone,

I have started collecting some root stocks for a couple different projects. I've tried searching through the forum to find a list of fruits and their associated seasons, but haven't had too much luck so I figured I'd start a list that could be useful to other people as well. If you live in Central Florida and have had success with grafting during a certain season, please list what you grafted and what time of year.

Citrus
Loquat
White Sapote
Mango
Avocado
Jaboticaba
Eugenia sp.
Garcinia sp.
Canistel
Carambola
Annona sp.
Sapodilla

Thank you all for your input and sharing your experience!

I can tell you the Vista White tastes very good. I don't know anything about cold hardiness since I'm in SoCal. Tree grows vigorously, high fruit production. If you don't have a white flesh loquat, you should add this one to your collection.

Do you experience any limb break from high wind?

3
How would you rate Vista White regarding tree hardiness and its fruit? I have only had common loquats.. Peluche and Vista White interest me although the only superior quality I have heard of the Peluche was fruit size, not much else regarding the tree itself or its fruit.

Sorry to open the old thread but I am looking for tissue culture banana plants, could you please let me know where you procured them from? I contacted going bananas a week ago and haven’t heard from them, not sure they are in business or perhaps open only for nursery wholesale. Looking for Dwarf brazilian, jamaican red/dwarf red, Raja puri and gold finger.

I visited GoingBananas last year; it did take a while to hear back from email, however we were able to arrange a meeting.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Neon Dragons

it may even originate from spicy exotics, they’re on Instagram and they seem legit; HUGE dragonfruit collection. Been posting the same farm since 2017

fr it’s not the same thing, compare my cutting with FV Fruit Freaks post S8 is more curvy

spicyexotics sells both and they have the same difference in curves

edit; read the description and see what you mean by tropical nursery so scratch my first few words

This is a better discussion for the dragonfruit thread, but I'll respond to your statement. People, have and will continue to sell genetically identical plants that are passed off as a new cultivar through frivolous or completely innocent means. If you want to blow your mind, go check out the fig aficionados, plenty of controversy over there. So, it is always a good idea to do your own due diligence to verify.

As for the picture comparison, you were advertising a new section of vine growth. Right now, that is less than 2 months growth - it's still immature. What FV Fruit Freak was selling is at least 1 year old vine. You know because of the flowers it had on it and the darker pigment. It is much older growth than yours. Curves mean nothing for this comparison.

If you want to continue the discussion, start this over on the dragonfruit thread. To the OP, take Brad up on his offer. Odds are, someone will just sell you S8 and say it's Neon!

I appreciate the advice, I reached out to FV a few days ago regarding their Sugar Dragon posting so until I get some new information I should be okay it seems. Thank you!

Neon is the same vaiety as sugar dragon and S8.  Its all the same plant.  I can sell you a couple pieces if you want some.  I have both varieties and they are the same thing.

Its my favorite one.

You haven't noticed any differences in the plants at all? Growth, flowers and fruits all the same?

Ebay has them. I've gotten lots of great cuttings, scions and seeds from there also.

Are there any vendors on eBay that you would recommend as having authentic cuttings?

Looking for a few Neon dragon fruit cuttings. Does anyone have them or recommend a spot that has them available? Was eye'ing galaplants.com as an option - has anyone purchased here or other wise know it to be trustworthy?

I am based out of central Florida, I can do local pick up depending on where you are located. I would also be interested in references to source one.

Thank you!

I went to the sale event this morning but did not stay long. I like that they let people in about 20 minutes early; there was a big line last year waiting to get in and the heat made it uncomfortable.
There were fewer vendors than last year, as far as I could tell. In my opinion, the mango selection was much better than last year, and i had to force myself to leave early so I would not buy more mango trees that I did not have space for. Most of them were in 3 gallons, and there were few in 25 gallons. Prices were pretty good, even cheaper than what I paid at a nursery.
It's also interesting that there were many jaboticabas at this year's event. I did not recall seeing any last year.
It was good to have a chat with folks from the Manatee Rare Fruit Council and UFL IFAS. They were pleasant people to talk to and learn from.

A few photos taken quickly to share. I took them whenever I remember lol, and there were much much more than I could record.

I think I see myself in your picture!
I got there at about 825, and as mentioned they let people in a little early. Lots of citrus selection at the entrance, but when it came to other fruits I didn't see much variety. There was a decent amount of carambola variety but nothing out standing.

I got myself a replacement avocado, 3gal for $45 - not much of a sale. If I had the space for mangos there was a couple vendors as mentioned that had variety, not just NDM and Pickering.

Do you already have "Mysore" in your collection?

Can anyone here describe mature heights for circulated varieties when planted in the ground? Also, are any varieties bushier than others?
I have an okay collection so far, but to be honest I love bigger trees so I want to know if there's anything I'm missing haha

Cheers! I really appreciate your support.

Updated initial post with more plants!

I really like this idea, would be interested/surprised to hear of downsides.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guava ID?
« on: September 28, 2021, 01:52:28 PM »
Is anyone familiar with what kind of guava this is? I purchased the fruit from a local grocery store that had it labeled as "Local Guava". There were some fruits that were even bigger, but not by a whole lot. The fruit had a very strong guava scent and moderate flavor that reflected the scent.

Check Malaysia/Borneo for December.

Lindsay usually does an incredible job checking in with growers are predicting peak seasons.

What will be available? Durian?

How about Australia.

Do you know what will be in season?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / November/December fruit crops
« on: September 19, 2021, 01:47:09 PM »
I am trying to plan a vacation in November/December and need your help.

Like all of you, I love fruit. Since I was eine Junge, I always enjoyed foraging for mushrooms and berries in the forests with Oma and Opa, as well as visiting markets for the day's local pick. Since growing up, I've taken to making trips down to south Florida and gotten to experience all kinds of tropical fruits - something I've grown to be passionate about.

Will there be any areas you could recommend, anywhere in the world, that will have an abundance of fruit or a strong culture of fruit active during the months of November/December? What fruits or products will be available?

Thanks!

Seeds arrived in great condition, thank you Raul!

Of those bananas, which would you say is the most cold hardy? I'm in 8a, but we rarely see temperatures below about 21 degrees.
I would say dwarf namwah. Theyre small, so they have more microclimate options. The key for the cold is to give the bananas as much time to establish their corm before the cold, preferably at the start of spring. As the cold approaches, you can pile up mulch around your bananas to help keep them warm. At least that's my experience.
