Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Annona Deceptrix starting to flower

If it’s been flowering for 6 months shouldn’t you have fruit by now?

Check where I live. Those 6 months have been overwintering in the house but also haven’t figured out the pollination method for this one. Hopefully will have that dialed in this season

Citrus General Discussion / 50 year old orange seedling
« on: April 14, 2025, 12:57:27 PM »
Not sure if I ever posted this before but figured I’d give it a share on here

Back in the 70s, my grandmother got an orange seed from Tropicana orange juice company. The tree that resulted is still going strong and I’ve since inherited it after she passed back in 2020. Fruits are decently sour with edible skin. The tree is currently loaded with fruits and new blooms

Which techniques did you use? Maybe I'll try some before my sticks go bad if I wait any longer. I'm grafting hachiya onto jiro fuyu

my go-to is always cleft grafts then tie a rubber band around to make sure contact is tight

A new standard of measurement!

hahah yup

I graft early spring when the tree is still dormant. Grafted some raven budwood onto my multi grafted tree over a month ago and its starting to push now

I’ve got the same exact thing goin on with my tree. I’ve been skeptical if it’s true variegation or just some leaf mutation mixed with chlorotic coloration

I have a tree in ground for a few years now. Grows like a weed, super thorny but has yet to flower

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Fruits off pawpaw runners

I noticed some established pawpaw runners are starting to flower on the property this year. Has anybody had the fruit off runners before and is it identical to the mother tree?

Wow. I have three seven foot tall ones with no sign of flowering.

How old are your trees? This one took a while to start flowering for me
I planted the seedlings out in spring 2019, so a bit over six years old. They're towering over E. involucrata seedlings planted at the same time, which are flowering. It seems like the flowers should come around May-June, fingers crossed. They don't have any weeping habit whatsoever, so it's interesting to see on yours. They're only now starting to come out of dormancy. Some definitely have nicer forms than others, unclear how much of that is growing conditions. Hopefully that translates to variation in fruit quality, and hopefully the uglier ones are worse.

Interesting, you probably have a year or two on me. My tree gets pretty root bound quickly and experiences some pretty dry periods when I’m not on top of the watering. Maybe that stress induced flowering for me

I originally bought a Vernon in that 3-5 gallon range and put it in a larger pot right away. Not sure of the exact size but it’s over 30 gallons and it’s been perfectly fine in that

Citrus General Discussion / Re: big freeze for kumquat tree
« on: April 09, 2025, 11:08:51 AM »
I love this time of the year where it warms up and everything breaks dormancy only to get torched  by a freeze weeks later. Didn’t jump the gun on moving too many things but a whole lot of greenery going on in my hoop house. Hoping there won’t be too much damage tomorrow morning

Yeah, I have a hydrangea that always make it through winter fine, but often gets whacked by that early April hard freeze that always comes, like it did last night.

Same my hydrangea started leafing out weeks ago. Was supposed to drop to 27 last night but looks like we only hit 30, only cold damage I saw this morning was on some white sage surprisingly. Now of course there's a 34 degree night on the horizon for next week, I'm sure that will continue to drop as we get closer to it

Usually I get lured by a week of warm weather in late march or early April and bring everything out, only to drag it back in 1-3 more times before temps are safe.  So far this year has had a cold day every week so I am not tempted!

oh yea I learned my lesson last year, I lost count of how many times I brought things in and out. A lot of things are getting way too big to keep playing that game. Its funny years ago I used to use mothers day as my date to be in the clear but now that's definitely overdoing it

Anybody selling some named cultivar scions? I have a big seedling ill probably be looking to graft this year
It seems like more and more people are succeeding with growing seedlings. What is your method of growing them.

I picked up a seedling from Nate @ Wildlands Farm a few years ago and it doubles in size every year. I managed to kill the four I did get to germinate but I think that's because they don't like to be separated once they send out that tap root. Got another batch of seeds I just finished cold stratifying that ill plant in their own trays this time
