Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango trees are super absorbers of CO²
« on: July 06, 2023, 01:29:12 PM »
What we know about mango trees and carbon sequestration so far

As mango trees grow, a process of carbon sequestration or carbon uptake occurs. The tree absorbs carbon dioxide from the environment and with it forms the trunk, branches leaves and fruit.

The process of growing, harvesting and shipping mangoes, from the orchard to the retailers, generates greenhouse gases and releases them into the environment. Mangoes use up more carbon than they emit. They are not just carbon-neutral but they have a carbon negative footprint. Mango trees are super absorbers of CO²; Mexican mango trees absorb significantly more greenhouse gases than is created in the production/shipping process, making them a positive crop to combat climate change.

https://www.underthemangotree.crespoorganic.com/2019/02/25/carbon-sequestration-in-mangoes/#:~:text=Mango%20trees%20are%20super%20absorbers%20of%20CO%C2%B2%3B%20Mexican,them%20a%20positive%20crop%20to%20combat%20climate%20change.

*** I am a global warming skeptic. But this looks like the world should plant millions more mango trees to absorb CO2. Now you have some new bragging rights. And orchardists and sellers can post a large sign next to their mango sales table

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Finally some rain in South Florida
« on: March 20, 2023, 12:21:59 AM »
Basically no rain in three months. My lawn needs this! Mango trees too. The trees need some water or you get more fruit drop-offs. I even watered my trees last week, which I never do. Rain is life, so good to see California getting rain bomb after rain bomb. With reservoirs getting filled.

"Let it rain, let it rain
Let it rain, rain, rain"

"Businessmen, they drink my wine
Plowmen dig my earth
None of them along the line
Know what any of it is worth"

5 years ago I bought a Troy Bilt mower w Briggs Stratton engine. The engine has always been easy to pull start and seems improved from previous years. But the deck rusted and cracked within 5 years. This became unusable last month. I was pissed!

So I figured give the Chinese a shot. So far so good. And self propelled.Walmart is easy 90 days return if you don't like it. ---  https://www.walmart.com/ip/PowerSmart-209CC-engine-21-3-in-1-Gas-Self-Propelled-Lawn-Mower-DB2194SH-with-8-Rear-Wheel-rear-Bag-Side-Discharge-and-Mulching/193485183?athbdg=L1100

This is a 209cc monster engine. So for me at least, I can now take mango tree prunings and trimmings, take those mango tree leaves and soft green stems and soft green branches and mulch them back into my lawn. So an easier disposal of these, plus my lawn gets nutrition.

Important -- run this first for 60 minutes. If the oil looks dirty, discard it and put in new oil. The famous (1000 reviews) Harbor Freight vertical shaft lawn mower engines from China. They are Honda clones...... The comment section there said to do this with the engine oil. They claimed due to metal shavings in the oil. That China can clone a Honda engine, but not to Japanese tolerances.
https://www.harborfreight.com/55-hp-173cc-ohv-vertical-shaft-gas-engine-epacarb-69731.html

Try running this mower with the usual 87 octane gasoline that has 10% ethanol.
Then run it on 89 octane with zero ethanol. I bought some at Wawa.
It runs better on ethanol free. My guess is that gasoline in China has zero ethanol. They are not going to take corn that you and animals eat and use it to power internal combustion engines. This would be crazy, and only something that Americans would do :)

This Chinese mower is horizontal shaft with a gearbox. And rear-wheel drive

YouTube has three or more videos demonstrating this 209cc mower.
More details on this Chinese mower if  people express interest

Hi
I want to grow citrus in a pot. My soil is too high pH.  Or can I plant it in my soil and apply enough wettable sulfur to bring down  the pH?

Thanks

What will happen this time around? In the 2008-2012 recession and onward, food prices were stable, with not much inflation. This time around, food prices are getting inflated. 10% yearly, they say.

What I see are processed foods (peanut butter, frozen this and that, bread etc.) prices are rising faster than the basics. Such as meats, chicken, rice, beans, vegetables that you cook at home.

Paid a landscaping company $300 to dispose of all the piles of mango and avocado tree debris
249 views  May 17, 2022  One guy came with the truck and the mulching machine so I thought it was a great opportunity to get some needed full body intense exercise by helping the guy out. It was so great! I’m 73 and I hope that this kind of activity will help get me to 115. Normally I fill my 7 green garbage cans twice a week with cuttings but now I’m in the middle of bringing all my trees to only 3-4 feet from sometimes 30 feet so there are a huge amounts of cuttings to be disposed.

*** I was wondering how you got rid of yr mango trimmings. The ultimate is to separate all the leaves and thin branches. Then mulch them into my lawn with my lawnmower. Half the time I do this. Other half I chuck them out for the trash man.

****In Broward county all trash goes to the incinerator in Pompano. So my mango debris help fuel the fire. I dump my old motor oil in too. Matter of fact, I got a mailing from the local trash haulers aka Waste Management. In so many words they said, "don't bother putting any recyclables in your recyclable bin/trash can" They all get sorted into the incinerator trash to be burned.

****All except aluminum cans. As far as iron and steel? I think that after burning everything, these are pulled out with a crane and a electromagnet. At least I like to think so.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Lemon Zest budwood and Orange Sherbet
« on: September 20, 2021, 04:47:58 PM »
I trimmed my LZ today. It has been overcast today plus I have a tarp over them. Lots of cuttings that I can send out tomorrow. I should have enough to fill two of these boxes. Email me directly at zzendo7 ... AT .....gmail DOT com

I know they will not be prepped. I charge $20 to fill a priority mail box with the scions that I put in a plastic bag with some wetted newspaper. You pay for the medium sized priority mail box which is about $17. You do the math. I think the US Post Office is now back to normal for priority mail, going by other stuff I have recently sent. Florida probably late for grafting but California, Arizona is not. So I think.

I also have an Orange Sherbet tree that I have not tip pruned all season. I can take scions off it tomorrow to send you a box that is half OS and half LZ.

For the real fanaticos that want to convert a tree to Keitt... This tree was trimmed today. The cuttings are on the ground and can be sent out tomorrow. Same price as up above.

Squirrels are my pests here, eating mangoes. Yesterday I saw one happily climbing up a mango tree that was done for this season. He will report back to not waste time with this tree.
Youtube has video of the squirrelinator working, trapping multiple sqirrels work at once

Did the sqirrelinator work for you? Thanks.------ What bait do you use?
Most likely I will buy directly from the sqirrelinator website.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Guarana plants
« on: August 10, 2021, 04:36:40 AM »
I have overgrown guarana vines. A few years ago I had them properly climbing and the fruits came to maturity here in South Florida. I have photos in this forum I will retrieve. https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=26237.msg305080#msg305080

By overgrown this means they have been rooting in too. You come to dig up. If I get lots of interest in them I might dig up and pot some too, to send out via priority mail.

Price - Not sure yet. I will be listing this at Craigs List in a week

I see one guarana plant listing at ebay and one at Etsy...Craig's list for South Florida I see two maybes

A shameless plug for this  store, been open only a few months
I was in there yesterday and bought good sized backyard avocados at $1 each
Limes- bought at 10 for $1
Longans from local backyard at $2.99/lb and fresh! I was very impressed to see longans.
Bought some vegetables

Mi Campo Farmer’s Market 7644 N Nob Hill Rd Tamarac, FL
http://micampofarmersmarket.com/  --- You can see what prices are here at their weekly flyer. They are low low low! for produce which is most of what they sell. But they have frozen foods and lots of other typical grocery store items. I even saw frozen artichoke hearts.

21
I have some Keitt fruits hanging that have reddish shoulders. A few have reddish blotches on their faces. They are still rock hard. If taken off the tree will they ripen in a room that is not air conditioned? Get ripe in 3-4 days? Are you eating your Keitts yet? All mangos seem early this year in SE Florida. Thanks for any input!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / The mango eating elite came by today
« on: July 12, 2021, 02:16:10 PM »
Today was buckets of rain
But they still came
They rolled up

First
Sami came from afar
Driving a spiffy English car
Sami in his Range Rover
Said move over rover
Let Sami take over
He went straight to my trees
He picked what he pleased

Then
Gilberto in this year's Lexus SUV
He picked what he needed

Thanks to both!
I was building up a mango excess
Putting me into
Slight distress

Any of you mango growers have someone who comes by in a Tesla? Or any kind of EV?

23
The rains falling down today on the just and and the unjust. It is greening up all lawns here. You might be an atheist but it doesn't matter.... You are still getting God's righteous rain coming down on your trees and plants.

How I would do this---

Cut the mango halves off. Scoop out all the flesh. Get flesh off the seed as well as can be done. All mango skins are tossed out. Put all this into a container and freeze.
How does this taste 3 months later?

From what I have read, that after a few months in the freezer it is a watery mess that has lost much flavor and sweetness? True or not? Thanks in advance!

25
I and others eat these new (2012) Zills this way. Cut the halves off close to the seed as possible. Like filleting a fish. Scoop out the halves with a spoon and eat/ Then scrape the skin to get multi-interesting tastes. Eat around the seed as much as possible for more multi-tastes.

The ST is the green skin one. Not rock hard at all.  It was slightly soft. Though all green outside the flesh was orange and sweet. Had full ST sweetness and nice acid complexity.
The LZ was full ripe yellow skin. Tasted 75% as good and sweet as the full taste LZs I have eaten. To be fair the LZ was ripe to slightly over ripe. (the ST was not!) So in LZ not much acid complexity, the sweetness overwhelmed it.

Verdict: Sweet Tart was the winner

In one photo note the large seed in ST. ST has a high seed to flesh ratio. Both kinds are poly-embryonic unless I am mistaken.

Above two photos show the mango halves from LZ (right) and ST (left).

With your tablespoon scrape the skin for all remaining flesh and good tastes.

The above two photos show the large ST seed compared to an intact ST half and a skinned ST half. ST has high seed to flesh ratio.

Best eaten outside then washing hands and face with this:
