Tropical Fruit Discussion / Briba need hand pollination?
« on: November 28, 2018, 05:24:58 AM »
I have a Rollins’s in a pot. It is flowering profusely now but every time it will just dry up. I suspect hand pollination needs to be done.

But I don’t see the flower having an opening where I can do the pollination. This goes the same for all the flowers as well. Is it because there is a short window gap where the flower open and only then can I do the pollination?

Or it is because the plant is still simply too small before it can hold the fruit?

I was just wondering if anyone is growing or have maybe even fruited the jungle durio species native to the Borneo island. If so, are they as easy to grow as the commercial variety?

Non zibenthanus species includes
Durio Dulcis
Durio graveleons(red or yellow)
Durio oxleyanus
Durio kutejenesis
Durio testidinarum(aka kura kura)
Hybrid between the zibethanus and jungle species
and any other that I have not listed.

I believe its important to keep them alive and thriving outside of their native range. Forest destruction is rampant there and we need people all over the world to help to preserve the durio diversity.
Currently, I am growing seedlings of Dulcis, graveleons kutejenesis and a hybrid. Space constraint is definitely a big issue in Singapore so they wun stay with me for long. Plan is to donate them to schools, parks or individuals who have big backyard.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cocktail guava tree???
« on: June 14, 2017, 11:16:22 PM »
I have about 4 varieties of guavas that I want to graft into a single one. Already I know that guava grafting is not that easy, but I did read that approach method is probably the best chance to succeed. But am I being too ambitious? I seldom hear guava grafting success stories, let alone a cocktail tree. Good to hear your experiences so that I know what my chances are.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Purple maroon guava
« on: December 28, 2016, 12:59:29 AM »
Had this recently, and the taste was absolutely fantastic. No grittiness and very sweet and berry like taste. Unlike those I have tasted previously. What is more interesting is that the core has turned almost dark purple bruise like Color, it's not over ripe but just nice. The core has become a purple jello and it's a pleasure to eat it. I know that guava has a high level of pectin and that have resulted in this. But it's still amazingly to see that.

I wonder if the others growing this guva

This start to happen about a few months ago. Starting from the bottom leaves before moving up to the top. The growth have stopped completely and leaves are starting to shred also. Could be deficient in something, can someone tell me?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rusty looking Sapodilla from Thailand
« on: October 20, 2014, 04:33:43 AM »
Hi all, i got these from the local mkts, supposedly from Thailand. They are rusty looking and looks similiar to a Canistel fruit. But i find them to be nicer than those other common varieties more readily available. They are must less gritty and take only about 2 days to ripen from a rock hard stage. Any more information on this variety will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Have you seen anything like this on guavas?
« on: August 26, 2014, 11:58:15 AM »
There are in fact about 4 of such flower buds growing straight from the main branches. Really strange. Did any encounter this for their guavas?

The pic was taken at night, apology for the poor quality taken with my iphone 4. But you can make out the flower bud somewhere in the middle of the pic. Sorry it's inverted.

Jet

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ultra tropical is not for Cherimoya
« on: May 06, 2014, 06:23:50 AM »
Hi all, I have been growing Cherimoya in singapore for about 2 years. I started it off from seed and it has grown slowly but surely into a healthy 1.5m plant. I am just curious what will be the fate of it in the coming years? Other than it won't ever fruit? Will it still be a healthy tree and maybe have flowers, but keep dropping?  Anyone out there has made such a silly experiment like mine before?

Hi, I was thinking of separating the little branch from the main stem, merely by cutting and rooting it. What are the chances? I thought it was still too young for marcotting. Otherwise, I will drop the whole idea.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Identify this passion fruit flower?
« on: April 07, 2014, 05:05:45 AM »
Is this Passiflora quadrangularis - Giant Granadilla? I notice that it is not as color as those pics I found from the internet. And it seems to be quite a bland fruit as compared to the other varieties. Any comments?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Are guavas difficult to graft?
« on: March 06, 2014, 05:56:17 AM »
I have tried to do it many times, results are the same. But I am sure someone out there must have done it successfully using a certain method of grafting technique. I am talking about the tropical guavas( psidium guajava). Thanks anyone.

Cheers,
Jet
