Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting Che to Mulberry
« on: January 14, 2022, 03:13:50 PM »
I saw a few successful Che to male mulberry bark grafts online but wanted to see if others have had success on TFF doing this. I tried che for the first time last year and it was very agreeable and aesthetic so I want to give it a try grafting to ever bearing / dwarf mulberry which seems to be a universal receiver of mulberry grafts.

Also wanted to try rooting some cuttings which I hear is challenging but not impossible.

Anyone have experience?

Iíve installed some fruit trees on this hillside but the soil is low quality and it also leaves a lot of root exposed. Iím planning to put in a small stone / log retaining wall and then build the wall up to be more level, and cut back the Rosemary and such. I plan to add about 2 tons of soil there and around the rest of my orchard.

Will adding nitrified redwood and topsoil bring the plum, mulberry and Pluot out of dormancy? I have read that nutrition in fall is very important for establishing the tree and it will use that energy for root building. I of course want them to sleep til spring as it does frost here.

Should I go ahead and do it now or wait till Spring?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 100 gallon pot options?
« on: November 11, 2021, 01:37:28 PM »

I have a happy and producing sabara jaboticaba in a 75 gallon fabric pot that will do better with an up pot and getting rid of the fabric pot. The soil dries out super fast, the edges are always dry, and it leaches a lot of water into the soil below it. It probably has oak roots coming into the bottom too... Anyways, NEVER use a fabric pot is my lesson to all of you.

There are a few options I'm considering for an up-pot:

65 gallon blow molded pot (these are $150 delivered) and dimensionally should barely work, the opening is the same width as my current pot, I may need to prune off / narrow the bottom roots to fit in fully but basically it's the exact same size. Not ideal because the tree won't really get to grow any more root mass, but it will work.

100 or even 300 gallon stock tank and drill a bunch of holes in it. The 100 gal stock tank is the same width as my pot up top but appear to be really narrow in the bottom and I'll probably need to cut off a bunch of roots to fit it into the taper, but then the plant will have some room (10 inches on either side) of fresh soil to get established in. If I get the 300 gallon tank, it will be a ton of $ for soil, the pot, and all that, but the tree will then have years of soil to grow into and will be happy probably for as long as I own it. The 100 gallon is $150, the 300 gallon is $300.

Putting it in the ground is not available to me due to being a renter, extremely high alkaline soil, and gopher pressure.

Any suggestions?

I'm a little overwhelmed with the heat and caring for so many plants so it's probably time to thin the herd a bit. I don't want to ship these cause it's too damn hot. Hopefully some CA folks are excited enough about the list to come visit!

Escarlate seedlings in 3" pots - $20

Grimal or Red in 3" pot - $20

1 gallon red jabos - $40

Campo Ramon - $60 - a little lanky but growing strong.

Campo Ramon - $100 - fantastic structure and growing fast

Rooted S8 cuttings $20:

Nelita eugenia calycinas $30 for small, $80 for big

Eugenia myrcianthes  $30

Isan Indigo seedling $40

15 gallon mamey seedling $80

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Anyone who can ship FL mangoes?
« on: May 23, 2021, 09:40:55 PM »
I think mango season is just kinda firing up in FL? - Any chance someone in FL could ship some selected varieties to Oregon? It would be much appreciated.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Apple disease ID
« on: May 14, 2021, 11:52:02 AM »

Anyone have ideas on this malady? This tree is 30-40 years old and all the old trunk was in very poor health. Iíve been taking off old funky looking wood and it leaves an orange coating on your gloves or hands / tools. This is healthy new growth but I want to get ahead of this stuff before it spreads.

The tree was way too cluttered and airflow was poor and itís much more open now.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 9b Spring
« on: April 03, 2021, 06:54:03 PM »
Things are cautiously opening up here in zone 9b. This year theyíre about a month behind what happened last year, but I prefer that. Last year I had tons of blooms and young growth that got burnt by a late frost.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jaboticaba Cultivars and their Leaves
« on: March 11, 2021, 01:04:05 PM »

I received all these beautiful scions while on a trip to Colorado and prepared them all myself and in doing so thought it was cool to see all the leaves of the cultivars together in one place. Perhaps others may like to see it to

I'm about to head out to the greenhouse and start grafting all of these onto one tree.

Iím going to heavily prune this Persian mulberry and will have some scions if anyone is interested. They range from smaller than a pencil to around 1/4Ē or so, maybe some thicker ones. Makes a thick black mulberry that has that electric blue raspberry tone. Very tasty.

Iíve been grafting all morning on my cocktail trees and clipped some of my flowering Sabara. Also have some left over small scions from Paloloís Paulista.

Theyíre pretty small but fresh and wrapped in buddy tape. Iíll sell them all for $20 + ship if anyone is interested.

I had grand plans for all these Florida mango seedlings but I think itís just too dang cold on the mountain pass I live on to risk them. Hopefully others in CA in Zone 10 and above want them! Theyíre all in 5 gallon pots and I didnít disturb the tap roots.

$20 each. Canít ship so hopefully people can come pick them up. Buy all 8 for $120.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cleft Grafting Pitanga / Surinam Cherry
« on: February 27, 2021, 03:18:41 PM »
I've been having good luck with cleft grafts on pitangas so I made a short video showing my process. I'm grafting Zill's dark from Achetadomestica onto my Lolita seedling which hasn't produced yet.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Up Potting Sabara Jaboticaba
« on: February 27, 2021, 03:17:30 PM »
Here's a fairly long video detailing my soil mix using off the shelf products here in California for my jabo soil mix. This jabo was really chloritic since the roots were tickling into my ultra alkaline soil and it badly needed an up pot.

Hope someone finds it helpful

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Acidic white sapote scions
« on: February 25, 2021, 11:59:30 AM »
Iím going to be topping my flowering 15í tall white sapote in a week or so. The fruit is mildly acidic which is really nice compared to the usual cloyingly sweet white sapote I usually have found.

Branch diameter will be between 1/4Ē - 3/8Ē

$5 per scion minimum 4 - available to US or PR only

Payment via PayPal

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / King White Mulberry Scions
« on: February 24, 2021, 12:44:49 PM »
I'm going to be doing some severe pruning on my king white mulberry and figured I'd offer up some scions. It produces fruit nearly as long as Pakistani and is pure syrupy sweet with a touch of watermelon flavor. The buds are just about to pop open so it's a great time to graft them.

Looks like this one:

Most of the pruning will be pencil thickness or a bit thinner, and between 4" - 10" long.

$4 per branch, minimum 5 branches. Will ship in USPS priority box.

PayPal for payments and US / PR only.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cleft Grafting Red Jabo onto Sabara
« on: February 16, 2021, 08:24:22 PM »

Another grafting video I was working on the last few days: putting some red hybrid onto my sabara cocktail tree. Lately I've been getting good takes on all the scions from members here so hopefully this gives you some confidence to give it a shot.

The cocktail tree now has aÁu paulista from Palologrower, Grimal from Jonah, and red hybrid from my tree which I just pruned.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Cleft Grafting a Cocktail Apple Tree
« on: February 16, 2021, 07:02:26 PM »
My neighbor's apple tree suffered for the last 30 years and then punched out a monstrous root sucker over the last few years, dwarfing the original grafted tree. I made this video of me grafting this apple tree with some details about how I go about it.

Can't wait to try this bad-boy out in the future with the 6 new types on it. Akero, Regent, Bill's Red Flesh, Cinnamon Spice, Irish Peach, Goodland and a fresh graft from the old graft.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cleft Grafting Pineapple Guava
« on: February 16, 2021, 04:35:47 PM »

I made a little video while I was grafting my pineapple guava. Not sure if that was the right type of graft to go with, but it's the one I have the most experience with. Anyone know what works best for feijoa?

The rootstock is a huge plant but the fruit quality and productivity is pretty bad, so I hope these all take.

Hammered on some: Nazemetz x 1, Coolidge x 3, Improved Coolidge x 2, Precocious X 4, and Nikita x 4 (The number being how many scions of each I put on.)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / I built a Cheap PVC Greenhouse
« on: October 12, 2020, 09:31:41 PM »

Iíd been hmmming and hawing about what to do about a greenhouse this year. Iím a bit short of space (width) and so this is what I came up with. Itís 24í long and 10í wide with a peak about 10í and will have two 940cfm gable fans to keep the highest part of the tunnel cooler. The sides roll up 2í and I havenít decided quite what do for walls but will likely just use more vinyl plastic.

Total cost is probably about $600 so far:

$200 for the vinyl cover
$300 in building materials
$100 in shuttered gable fans

Really looking forward to a warm and humid space in the winter.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Damaged cherimoya
« on: August 19, 2020, 02:42:10 PM »

Would you do anything with this damage? It seems so bad that but itís growing slowly above it still. Iím tempted to lop it off at the bottom of the damage and hope it sends up a new leader.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Plinia spiritosanctensis seeds
« on: August 03, 2020, 02:41:23 PM »
Anyone have these for sale or a source? Thanks!

Iíve been planting a lot of seeds over the last couple years and itís getting a little too full at my house. Figured I would offer up some seedlings if anyone is interested in the Santa Barbara or Central California coast area. I donít want to ship these, so please find a way to pick up locally. Iím at the top of the 154 in SB

All these plants are hardened to 100f+ and all went down to 32f, so itíll be a tropical vacation if you take them somewhere else in CA thatís 9b or above. It is a desert / low humidity environment here so itís not really nice for jabos, but again, theyíll love a more mild area. I up potted all of them (other than the inga, which are rooting out of the pot) over the last few weeks into my own soil mix and theyíre all taking off.

5 gallon inga - $60 - I have two Iíd sell
Black Star or Vermillion pitanga - $30 - many. I canít tell which is which but all are from grafted trees which produce delicious black fruits
Orange Eugenia - these are from Marcos in Argentina - $30
CORG - $30 - from Marcos in Argentina
Red jaboticaba seedlings - $30 - Florida seeds
Lemon drop mangosteen or lemon drops - $20 - big roots and pushing new growth fast now

Have many seeds from desirable places in pots and starting off too, you can take a look if you visit? Nelita calcyina, Zills pitanga, red jabos, white jabos, etc etc.
Also have lots of good dragonfruit I can take cuttings of for you.
