Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dwarfing a vigorous tree
« on: July 29, 2023, 01:46:59 PM »
Hi guys, I'm back at making videos :) and this one is about quite an interesting technique of dwarfing a vigorous tree. Why haven't I thought of it before myself? Technically it's very easy to do, anyone can do it. https://youtu.be/iiFEvvg7UMk

I hear lots of complains especially about huge mango trees, this can easily be a solution. What do you guys think? Have you tried it before? If yes, please share photos of the tree.

Hi friends,
James - SaltwaterTx had contacted me via fb messenger for Manilla tamarind seeds. He had sent me some seeds a while back and i wanted to send him some of my seeds as a trade. I had promised a few months ago but they were not ready. Now they are fruiting and i wanted to send the seeds but it shows he was last active in fb May 24th. When i see his activity here in the forum, it says May 24 last active as well. I just want to make sure he is all right. Is there any grower here from his neighborhood who can check?

5
Hi friends,
i have over 30 turpentine mango seedlings for those wanting to graft mangoes.

Some have girth much thicker than pencil thickness size and some a little thinner but growing fast with heat and rain now. The thick ones are $20 and thin ones $15. There are many that i have made into double rootstock and some triple rootstock. Also there are 5 trees that are from a dwarfing rootstock, trees that i found naturally dwarfed in CR. Their fruits were small and round, smaller than our turpentine and sweet, spicy but fibrous.

Discount if you buy in bulk - $150 for 10 trees.

Can do both local pickup and shipping. But i won't have time to ship right away since i am traveling back and forth but you can always come pickup if we can arrange date/time.
I also have many grafted 1g mangos  on turpentine, there are of the varieties i like. Will sell them next time once seedlings are gone.

6
They are in 7g but really should have been up-potted to 15g, i just don't have 15g pots  ;D . Already fruited many times and might be holding some fruits even now. I have 5-6 , each $80. If you take them all i will give for $65 each. Pick up at North Miami Beach until Monday the 8th.

« on: August 29, 2022, 08:36:28 PM »

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango tastings 2022 - let's start!
« on: May 12, 2022, 11:43:21 AM »
hi friends! My first mango tasting of the 2022 season is on. Twist: it’s not Florida mangoes! 😜 (some really hilarious wildlife guaranteed as well!) hope you guys enjoy both, let me know what you have tasted so far this season and how it was.

I'm really tired of checking my cucumber and other cucurbit vines every day and finding more and more damaged ones from within. Birds and possums are great but they are just not smart enough to dig inside the plant  :o . Leaf rollers, pickleworms - so hard to protect the plants from them without chemicals.
Have you tried releasing any predatory species of beetles? I read that calasoma species is called "caterpillar hunter" or "caterpillar searcher" which gives lots of hope  ;D

2022 SHADEHOUSE CLEARANCE SALE

I'm back from my travels and still have some plants available. Will be adding some more exciting plants coming weeks!

Shipping from South Florida. The shipping cost will be calculated according to the number of plants purchased; my shipping app is giving the best price from all major shipping companies. I usually ship priority or equivalent from UPS/FedEx, but if you prefer express shipping, let me know at time of purchase. If I overcharge you for shipping on preorders, I will reimburse when I know the actual shipping cost.

I ship Mondays and Tuesdays, unless you want some other day (specify).
If you want to see a photo of the plants you’ll receive, let me know before I pack them.

I will do my best to pack your plants with utmost care, but if there is any damage to plants during shipping let me know (some plants like jackfruits and wax jambus take breakage very easily but others like tree tomatoes don’t).

If your box arrives damaged and the plant suffers or dies from it, you have up to $50 insurance from the shipper, please file a claim with them asap. If you want to upgrade insurance, let me know.

If you buy $100+, you get a choice of a free plant! Free plant is any 4inch pot of your choice from what is still available.

Payment is strictly PayPal friends and family to oshomiami@gmail.com ; however, if you want to pay Goods and Services, add 3% to the total (including shipping). In the Paypal note to the payment write which plants you are paying for, and your shipping address.

Our medium consists of coir, peat, perlite, vermiculite and commercial inoculants, depending on the demands of a plant. We don’t use soil (unless stated) but cannot guarantee that the medium doesn’t have extra life. Millipedes come, worms come etc. so please check your state’s regulations before ordering. We assume no responsibility for confiscated plants.

For friends who are around driving distance from North Miami Beach, FL :

I am going to graft some C.tetrameria #6 and #7 (wooly white sapote) variety to my C. edulis- regular white sapote seedlings. I have 5 spots where i can graft. I might be getting more than 5 scions from a very generous forum member in CA. If you want to graft C.tetrameria on to regular white sapote please message me. Won't ship.

Update Feb16th, 2022 - Scions arrived early, i have grafted much, some still left but so far no interest from growers in Miami-Dade and Broward county. Probably there are more rare fruit growers in West palm and northern counties and in Gulf coast area but since nobody reached out, i will close the topic. In future, if my grafts take and i can provide any scions i will be happy to share.

Reportedly, C. tetrameria #6 and #7 are one of the best tasting ones from CRFG taste test. Also using C.tetrameria as an interstock or a rootstock has been found to dwarf the size of C.edulis trees without compromising the fruit production. This experiment was done in CA so i don't know how they will perform in Florida weather and soil, but i am trying to experiment and welcome anyone who wants to join.

Also, i am sharing this, not selling. I am only trying to distribute the species so we can have them for more growers here in South Florida.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Group Seed Order from BRAZIL # 2
« on: December 02, 2021, 07:29:39 PM »
Hi friends, after a long thought of whether i should go forward with the order or not i have decided to go forward. Since we already had 7 friends who had submitted their final count of seeds, it was easy for me to just send that order to the seller and wait. Then i applied for permit and obtained it. The seller has sent the final prices for phyto, shipping and paypal fees. I have never done transaction with the seller, nor can i vouch for whether his seeds will germinate. We are all taking the calculated risk based on trust of forum members who got their seeds previously, so if any problems occur please deal directly with the seller.

My wife is better at math than I am:) so she offered to divide the international shipping cost between friends based on each person’s total, and I think it’s more fair because some people have small orders and some, like me, large ones. I will be sending message tomorrow to each of you to confirm your totals. I will be sharing the file sent to me by seller directly to you so there is transparency.

Everyone will pay directly to the seller, that way your order will be protected by PayPal. As this is a group order, we won’t be able to proceed until the last one of you pays. If you decide to cancel your order, let me know asap and please do not ghost me, so that I can substitute you.

Additional costs apart from the total cost of seeds will be as follows:
- Phyto + International shipping-DHL + Seller’s international paypal fee 7%
- Domestic shipping via USPS small priority plus shipping supplies - $11 each.
- I am not charging anything for my time. You can be nice and friendly to me and pay in a timely manner without delays, that will be my charge.

Forum sometimes eats up messages and there is no way to know if you received forum messages or not, so i suggest you share your email address with me (oshomiami@gmail.com) for group discussion and updates on this order.

After everyone confirms their total, and pays directly to the seller, make a screenshot of your payment and put in the group email. After all the payments are confirmed, package will be shipped. Please don’t delay the entire group!

Thanks everyone 🙏🙏🙏

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Purple guava rot ☠️
« on: August 03, 2021, 04:56:06 PM »
Hi friends,
I was waiting on a huge Thai giant white guava that almost outgrew the mesh bag (as they always do) when I noticed that half the fruit was rotten. The fruit was away from soil, hanging high in a well aerated area. When I cut the fruit it was weirder than fiction... the rot was purple in color  😈  :o
Have you ever had this kind of rot? What could it be, and what could be the reason? This is the first time I see guava rot so drastically out of all my guava trees... hope it won't spread....

GARDEN CLEARANCE SALE 2020

We love all these trees/varieties and bought or propagated them at some point in the past, but have no space in the garden for all of them any longer, so I created many multigrafted trees and the rest is for sale now. I do not spray pesticides or use synthetic fertilizers, no systemics have ever been used on these plants. Grown organically, inoculated with 25+ mycorrhizae and trichoderma.
3g, 7g and 15g trees are local pickup only in North Miami Beach, FL; 1g and 4inch pot trees can be shipped, 2-3 of 4-in or 1 of 1g fit in a usps priority shoebox, calculated by weight, about 3+lbs or tall medium flat rate priority (3 4-in plants, doesn't fit 1g pots). Make me want to travel to the post office ☺ . We pack with care and securely.
We also save seeds of pretty much everything we grow, ask me what we have.
Payment means the plant is reserved and off the list, otherwise first come-first serve, no reservations. If you want to pay and pick up later we can keep the plant for a few days for you. Paypal or cash only, PM for all the details.

Can also trade for tamarillo seeds or plant.

1g trees/seedlings

White sapote seedlings- $10 each- have many for shipping- these are McDill seedlings we kept for grafting. They are growing fast and are over 1ft tall and will soon not be able to fit in shipping box for shipping. So this is for out of state friends who want to graft other varieties.

Elderberry - a very important plant during the pandemic! - propagated by root suckers from a producing tree

Jackfruit Bangkok Lemon seedlings - in 1g pots - $15 each

Jackfruit Mai-3 seedling - 1g  and 4inch pot seedlings - $15 each

Peanut butter tree seedling - $10 each

Java Plum/Jamun - 20 seedlings in 4inch pot- $10 each

Java Plum seedlings grow very fast and can grow well in up to 9A zone in my experience, if it was not for a big tree this would excel jaboticabas in taste, to me the taste is more complex plus tons of medicinal properties. The tree will take 6-7 yrs to bear fruit from seedling, will still take 5-6 yrs if grafted.

Black surinam cherry seedling in 4inch pot - $10 each

Pitomba seedlings in 4inch pot - $15

7g trees

Tart tamarind - $35

Chinese Godess Bamboo (Bambusa multiplex riviereorum) -have 4 of these for perfect hedge, they grow up to 10ft and become bushy - $50

An ultra dwarf bamboo Pogonatherum paniceum or Panda grass that grows like a cloud and is perfect for hiding ugly spots in the garden. Clumping, will not take over. First photo is of the mature plant, doesn't grow taller than that. Tolerates light frost. The 2nd plant is for sale (the garden fork is for size comparison) in a 10g grow bag- $45, I have a small baby plant ready for shipping also -$15.

3g

Natal Plum- crawling variety, very ornamental tropical looking foliage, fragrant white flowers and edible fruit. Never gets deficient even in poor soils - $15

Mysore Banana pup - one of my best tasting bananas- $10

Permaculture and pollinator attractant plants.
I don't think an organic sustainable fruit orchard can thrive and fight with pests without the pollinators and companion planting. These are plants that we grow ourselves in our organic garden. These plants are in 4in, 6in, 1g pot and are anywhere from $5 to $10 each.
- Katuk - plant protein powerhouse
 - Alternanthera brasiliana or Brazilian purple joyweed - a beautiful dark purple low bushy plant that is hassle free to grow, perfect for a lazy gardener like me. It is very ornamental and has pretty flowers that look like stars in the dusk, but it is edible cooked in curries, has antiviral properties and is good for herbivorous pets.

- Lippia alba - research has been done about its antidepressant and sleep enhancing qualities. Very pleasant minty taste for a great cup of night time tea
-Cranberry Hibiscus - another beautiful looking small bushy plant that can add beauty to your garden. Plus, the leaves are edible and are high in vitamins B3 (niacin), B2, A and C. It is high in protein and is an excellent source of antioxidants and anthocyanins. Please cook the leaves/boil to remove oxalate as you do for all brassicas like kale. Has beautiful dark maroon flowers that attract pollinators.
-2 varieties of coleus that grow very ornamentally and attract millions of bees - variegated and chartreuse. Bees' favorite flowers during summer months that require virtually no care.
-Red ixora - attracts tons of butterflies and other pollinators
-Lavender firespike - attracts butterflies and hummingbirds
-Epazote - highly medicinal plant that is said to have strong anti-cancer properties; cook it with beans, and you won't have gas :)
- Everglades tomato - native Florida cherry tomato that has done very well here in South FL without special care. Self seeds easily if you allow some fruit to fall onto the ground. (seeds only at this time, until next season)
- Native ground cherry - Physalis walteri - edible fruit, fruits fast like a tomatillo. Grows perfectly well in sandy soil.
- White hummingbird tree - the entire plant is edible: leaves, pods, beans, flowers, plus it is a nitrogen fixer. Beautiful canopy tree, gets to about 15-20ft in height.

- Permaculture starter kit - 6 very important starter plants. Everglades tomato, Cuban oregano, aloe vera, African potato mint, Surinam(e) spinach and Okinawan spinach. $10 for all. Can create other starter kits upon request.

Many more plants if you visit in person! A thoughtful selection of rare perennial edibles, carefree ornamentals, and a combination of both:) and of course fruit trees.
Would love to meet you all fruit growers in person and share how we are growing our food forests.

We have been visiting forum members in South Florida and getting to learn a lot from their experiences of growing a food forest. Most of the forum friends have been very welcoming and kind to invite us, show us around their garden, explain their struggles starting the food forest and the difficulties encountered over the years, and their glorious victories alike. The trips have been informative as well as fun as we get to enjoy an exciting conversation, tastiest fruits and see trees we have not seen before, but most importantly, we love the connection we make with the forum friends and end up with the feeling like we are a family of gardeners.

Here is our amateur video highlighting some interesting aspects of pineislander's (Jay Reynolds') Treehouse permaculture farm, a food forest in Pine Island, FL that we've been following for a while. Enjoy!
