I've been collecting rare tropical palm trees / tree ferns / ti's / crotons for about 15 years.  As the palm trees grew overhead, I found that I had a lot of space underneath where once was covered by palm fronds.  I was already incorporating ti's and crotons in the garden.  What could I grow that would fill the void created by the palms getting taller?  I was fortunate to go on a palm garden tour where the owner incorporated several Eugenias varieties.  I researched online and soon caught the bug for tropical fruit trees/bushes.  I am blessed to have a 1/4 acre garden in Huntington Beach.  I have planted several Eugenias and now have moved up to adding mangoes / lychee / longan / loquat / tropical guavas / jujube to the mix.  I am no where planted out, but hope to have these planted this year.

This picture is just a section of my garden where I will incorporate the fruit trees:

I haven't personally seen a large Grumichama in SoCal.  The largest I've seen in person was only 6' tall and fruiting.  Are there plants that are 10'-15' range?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Has Anyone Heard of Eugenia’Restinga’?
« on: November 20, 2020, 09:48:16 PM »
I’m always looking for new Eugenias, but never of this one before.  Sounds like a Eugenia from the Restings region of Brazil.  Could be Pitomba?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Eugenia involucrata varieties
« on: October 10, 2020, 09:53:31 AM »
Does anyone have both E. involucrata sp. ‘Nelita’ and ‘Ben’s Beaut’?

They both seem to be the large fruiting varieties.  Want to know if there is a difference between the two.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dark Surinam Cherry
« on: October 07, 2020, 04:09:41 PM »
Hi,

I have a red Surinam Cherry and wanted to add a dark one.  My understanding is that I want a grafted plant to ensure that it will be dark because seedlings from the dark plants can revert to being red.  Can someone confirm this?

Thanks in advance,

Joe

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Plant Naming Convention Suggestion
« on: September 20, 2020, 01:48:31 PM »
I suggest people use the latin name for plants.  It removes a lot of confusion.  If we all can see the genus/species, it makes it a lot more straight-forward.  Trade names or 'Cultivars' can then be used to show differences within the same species.  I am trying to learn about Plinia and Myrciaria.  I am guilty of using the generic name of Jaboticaba as well.
