Tropical Fruit Discussion / Growing Pummeloin colder zones possible?
« on: April 21, 2024, 09:46:53 AM »
I’d love to grow a Valentine Pummelo but I’m not sure if it will get the heat it needs in my zone. Protecting it from frost isn’t a concern for me. I just want to see if anyone else is growing it in more sub tropical-temperate climate with any success.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / TFF sticker decals?
« on: December 16, 2023, 06:16:02 AM »
Has anyone produced any cool stickers to show off the forum to the public? I’m not sticker savvy but maybe it would be cool to vote on a few designs (if members created) and each year have a new version. Charge a few bucks and put the money back into the website perhaps?

« on: December 04, 2023, 11:47:22 AM »
My fung twang made its first fruit in a 7 gallon grow bag that I purchased this July. Do carambolas have 2 harvests per year? Also what varieties are your favorite? I picked this one off many of your recommendations. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My first Buddhas hand!
« on: October 21, 2023, 09:21:58 PM »
It’s been 3 years in the making but I finally grew my first Buddhas hand. Sadly I’m disappointed in taste and aroma. To me tastes and smells like a mellow lemon. Still an awesome conversation piece and citrus collectors item!

What do you with your Buddhas hand fruits?

Pic includes a fuyu for size reference

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Breadfruit tree for indoor plant collection?
« on: October 08, 2023, 07:40:53 PM »
I love the leaves of this plant and can’t grow it outside in my zone. Would it be an okay window grower indoors similar to growing a ficus fiddle leaf fig?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Shampoo ginger awapuhi
« on: September 26, 2023, 04:33:25 PM »
I’m pretty intrigued by the cosmetic uses of this plant. I recently ordered some rhizomes to grow and possibly harvest next year. As someone who lives in zone 8b how should I go about taking care of these rhizomes? Keep them potted until free of frost indoors or greenhouse? Store the rhizome in a cool dry place?

Thanks for the responses!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Your favorite oddity zone 8 fruit
« on: May 31, 2023, 12:28:58 PM »
Im looking to grow my collection of fruiting plants. I recently bought a Japanese raisin tree sapling and I got the itch for more trees or shrubs. What's your favorite fruit tree for zone 8 that may be uncommon?  I have a Yuzu and a LSU fig but I think the raisin tree makes the top of the list.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passionfruit container plant
« on: May 20, 2023, 05:15:46 PM »
Hello!  I wanted to share my passionfruit growing technique for those that want to grow it in a pot and for colder climates. The picture of my purple possum is 3 years old. I received a cutting and planted it in ground the first year. It grew up an oak tree and produced 2 fruits. Before the first frost I took cuttings and rooted them during the winter in a pot. On the 2nd year I moved it to its permanent home, a 12 gallon pot that sits in a 17.5 gallon pot. I trellised it using 5 foot heavy gauge tomato cage. When it outgrew the “trellis” I took another tomato cage and flipped it upside down and zip tied the ends together. At this time I staked the outer pot in the ground (see green poles)  now that it will most definitely blow over in windy conditions. At the end of year 2 with little fruit to show I trimmed 50% off the vines and removed the top tomato cage so that I can store the entire plant inside the garage during the winter. This year makes year 3. The plant received its 2nd tomato cage again and grew fast with multiple flowers every day in May. I already have about 15-20 fruits getting to size. I assume that passionflower bears more fruit after a year or two once it becomes more mature and/or enjoys a good pruning.

I haven’t seen anyone else do this so I thought I would share. I’m in a subtropical environment so I’m working with what I can. Passionfruit is my favorite smoothie fruit so I’m glad my labor of love is cashing in! It makes a great conversation piece on my patio too

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Using ocean water have any benefits?
« on: May 14, 2023, 09:02:46 PM »
I seen a fertilizer company selling ocean water stating it had benefits for most plants. Does anyone water regularly or use sea water as a fertilizer? I’m a mile from the ocean and could easily get some 5 gallon buckets filled.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dream greenhouse build help
« on: May 09, 2023, 10:07:59 AM »
Hey everyone. I’m looking for some ideas and reviews on some larger commercial style greenhouses if anyone has one they can recommend or not recommend. I’ve been eyeing the TMG industrial ones. Basically looking for 30x100 with 12-16 feet heigh and have a high wind tolerance. I have a budget of about $15k. I plan on growing and expanding my tropicals along with housing different species of rainforest tortoises that I breed as a hobby. Any help would be appreciated

My wife loves the white or pinkish store bought strawberries so I saved some of the seeds to grow ourselves.

Has anyone grown these before? I think in Europe they are called a pineapple berry

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cycad appreciation
« on: February 12, 2023, 10:31:29 AM »
Does anyone enjoy growing Cycad species?

In my zone Cycas revoluta (Sago 'palm') grows well but that is all I see in my local residential landscapes.

I started growing Zamia furfuracea (Cardboard palm) because its textured foliage really got my attention.

Encephalartos horridus is at the top of my wishlist to grow from seed.

Anyone care to share their cycad photos?

I havent tasted a Lemonade lemon yet but I got my first Sanbokan sweet lemons off my tree and it was amazing eaten out of hand and in lemonade.

It makes me wonder if anyone has tasted both or have both trees and have a good taste profile between the two.

(Sanbokan may be my new favorite lemon variety. I may need to experiment crossing it with my Ugli fruit for a Frankenstein pomelo)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Florida trip. Need recommendations!
« on: December 24, 2022, 10:29:47 AM »
I’m heading to the Peace River in central southern Florida to look for fossils this January and want to do some other adventurous activities while I’m there. Also kayaking with manatees in Homossassa. I’m willing to travel around the  whole state. Preferably looking for a U-pick citrus grove, cool arboretums, nurseries, state parks, zoos, farmers markets, wholesale markets

Please let me know if there is a “must-do” you would recommend!
