« on: June 22, 2022, 10:53:44 AM »
Anyone in san diego area want to do one of these again?  Ive been extremely busy with house projects and homeschooled 1 kid through 1st grade this year.  Things are finally almost settling down and I have time to relax a bit if you guys want to have a get together we can make that happen.  Maybe early August?  Let me know if these enough interest.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Plum cherry cross (pluerry)
« on: June 19, 2022, 09:35:38 PM »
Just got my first crop of "sweet treat" pluerry.  I think its from zaigers.  Trees was from dave wilson.  The fruits are really nice.  Worth a shot growing.  It fruited well here even with less than the stated 450hrs of required chill.  Seems like a winner.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Overhyped avocados
« on: May 26, 2022, 12:04:57 PM »
Just had to rant about this...  Sorry in advance  :D  I noticed theres so many overhyped avocado types.  I tried growing as many as possible and found most to be uninspiring.  Either the flavor is not there, or the tree has bad growth habits, or some other problem.  Many of these are hyped up by the UC breeding program or by the grounds keepers at the UC Irvine grove.  And some have just been around forever and for some reason people keep propogating them even though theres much better options  ???

My chainsaw has been getting a real workout lately.  Heres a short list of ones that have had a date with the chipper.

And theres more that will likely be chopped down and turned into saw dust after I waste a few more seasons on them as well !  ;D  :P

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Irrigation pump question
« on: April 30, 2022, 12:49:49 PM »
Is anyone using a seperate irrigation pump to pull from a tank or from a pond?  Not directly from a well?

Im thinking of adding a dedicated irrigation pump to draw off a water tank and push water to sprinkler lines.  What I dont know is if I can do it without sprinkler valves?  Ideally the pump would get kicked on and it would just push straight to the nozzles and there wouldnt need to be a valve at all.  I just dont know if water will always want to run through the pump when not in use.  Because the water tank is at the highest spot on the property and all trees are downhill from there.  The pump wont need to do any lifting to prime itself.  I dont want a sprinkler valve in the equation if possible.  Ideas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Inca red cherimoya
« on: February 12, 2022, 01:09:57 PM »
Kind of looks like atemoya.  Leaves are a tad skinny too.  This was highly rated at our fruit tasting a year or 2 ago.  Havent cut this fruit up yet.  Will try it tomorrow.  Just wanted to post pics of the fruit and encourage others to grow this one.  It might even fruit in florida.  Does not have any rubbery taste or texture like atemoya but it sort of looks like it has some atemoya genetics.

« on: February 05, 2022, 09:09:44 PM »
It tastes amazing.  Thank you for sending fruit to try twice now.  This time was very dense and oily. Very good avocado 8)  Its as good as late summer reeds from CA.  6 months earlier.  Very nice fruit wow, the whole family loved it.  We had lemongrass chicken and vegetables and threw the lolo on there too.

Hope this one works because I did about 100 of them like it.  Ive done them in the past but not enough to know if its highly successful.  Was the best I could come up with for the size of the rootstocks.

Obviously the graft is not yet wrapped in the photo.  Just showing the cuts made.

if you live somewhere cold you may need to wait longer to try this one.  The bark was slipping on most of my rootstocks but a few were not yet.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado poll
« on: November 20, 2021, 08:33:28 PM »

Which avocados are most appealing to you?  Ive put the types I personally like and can also grow in this location.  I have to make a decision which types to grow for sale.  Which is a difficult choice to make.  The ones that taste the best dont necessarily fruit well or grow well and end up costing more to grow.

Reed, sharwil, nabal are superior fruits IMO but these are not as easy to grow here as the hass family. Hass is an awesome fruit and they grow and produce well here but its difficult to sell unless selling wholesale.  Tough to compete with mexican avocado production even if the fruit here are higher quality.

Lamb and Gem are highly productive, but they are B grade fruits.  All of these have some tradeoff.
