I would let some fruit hang on there, but not full load.

From someone that knows better, she lets them fruit even in 15 ga containers:

The root system is almost 5 years old, but I top worked it last year, so the top growth is almost 1 year old.

The rest of the tree looks fine I think, but it was at a major junction so I was afraid I'd lose all the top growth. It was rotting inside, but I didn't see any insects with the naked eye. I cleaned it up best I could and wrapped in parafilm. Hopefully it heals.

I am talking about the two gashes. I am afraid some beetle/weevil or something of the sort has gone in there.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help with Avocado Tree!
« on: January 08, 2022, 08:30:55 AM »
I noticed yesterday this cut and white stuff growing around it on my avocado tree. I am not sure if some insect or fungus is doing it. I am concerned it will kill my tree if it keeps going.

I tried peroxide and copper spray, the white stuff came back. I am not sure if I should open up the bark and dig in to try and clean it before applying tanglefoot.

If anyone knows what this might be or has any advice I would really appreciate it.

Thank you,
Dorian

Just out of curiosity....why do you want to do so much to your one tree?

Multiple varieties....A and B flowers....for what?

Maybe you are asking for too much from a single plant.

Just a thought

Just for better fruit production, also Catalina wasn't really my first choice for taste, but it took and has grown well.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Are persimmons susceptible to RKN?
« on: December 22, 2021, 09:03:08 AM »
Hello, I live in Miami, Florida, and apparently have plenty of root knot nematodes (RKN) in my yard. I believe they killed my lime tree (found roots filled with galls). I really want to have a tree in the spot where I had the lime though. Does anyone know if persimmons are susceptible to RKN? I wonder if the Nishimura Wase "Coffee Cake" persimmon on Native American Persimmon 'Diospyros virginiana" (from JFE) would also meet its demise if I plant it in the same spot.

Thank you,
Dorian

Hello, I am looking to fix my avocado tree. The original graft from the nursery died, so I managed to top work it with Catalina (and maybe Choquette if it holds). Now I'm looking for some B flower varieties that would do well in Miami, Florida to pair with existing A (will be grafting onto the same tree) which flower around February, especially Monroe, Sharwil (Kona Sharwil), Nishikawa, or Kahaluu.

Does anyone have any for sale, or if you could point me to any website that sells good scionwood I would appreciate it.

Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Dorian

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Introduce Yourself
« on: November 24, 2021, 05:24:55 PM »
Hello I'm Dorian, living in Miami, FL. Currently growing (or trying rather, mostly not that successfully) Meyer Lemon, Papaya, Avocado, Figs, Dragon Fruit, Passion Fruit.

I came to the forum as I am looking to "fix" my avocado tree. Initially it was a Hass, the grafted shoot died off, but there were two surviving water shoots. I kept one (roots are now 4+ years old) and I successfully top worked it with Catalina. I am now looking for companion Type B to graft onto it as well, looking for Monroe, Sharwil, Nishikawa or Kahaluu scionwood.

Looking forward to picking up some knowledge.
