Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango April bloom
« on: April 08, 2023, 03:33:17 PM »
Has anyone had occasion to notice if Sweet Tart in particular responds to drought stress?

Hi, I found a fully grown avocado that was wrinkling or more like shriveling on the tree (waiting to see how it develops off the tree but I'm not expecting much). Only one so far - why would that happen?  On the same tree I'm picking avocados that come off leaving their stem behind, already softening slightly (not softening so much as unhardening), that then when they mature off the tree wrinkle a tiny bit around the stem end. Quality of the fruit is excellent though, creamy and not rubbery at all. Any ideas as to what's going on?

These are mine, mostly pear-shaped. Still unwilling to come off the tree. I did harvest one and I'm eating it now -,creamy and delicious although I think it would've been even more so if it had stayed on the tree longer. The Campbell PDF says "ovoid to pyriform", so ours qualify I think.

I'm going to wait a bit longer for this fruit but when I cut one open I'll for sure share the pics. How frustrating to wait three years thinking I had Kampong and not have it 😡. Carlos do you sell budwood, or would you? I don't know of a trustworthy source of this variety.

This is my Kampong 2014

These are 2022

This from 2018

Definitely not pear-shaped. Do you have any idea what this might be that I have? I got the budwood from someone
in Florida but I can't remember who!

Very common in Hawaii and many parts of SE Asia
Thank you for responding. Do you mean the variety is common in those places, or that the variety is commonly pear-shaped in those places?

The latter. There being many different types of avocados and many are pear-shaped

Of course, but are any of the pear-shaped types Kampong?

I have had some avocadoes that were supposedly "kampong" that looked like that.  This year I'm going to get a chance to try some that are from a tree that is definitely kampong, so I will respond here once I do.
Great please do. Do you know where the pear shaped Kampong came from? I can't remember where I got my budwood.

My top-worked to Kampong tree is holding its first fruit this year. They are distinctly pear-shaped as you can see in the photos - has anyone seen them like this before?

Picked around October 10. This year they are spectacularly clean. The flavor 10++++. For those who value creaminess, AAA. Just clean tasting avocado,
Lacks the Catalina, Nishikawa and to some extend Oro Negro boiled egg taste that I don't like.   Delight on avocado toast or as side dish.  May be climate change is going to benefit some old varieties.
I wonder why this is not in every nursery in Florida, instead of the latest hype. On the late season spectrum this beats Monroe, Choquette, Lula, Hall. Not sure about the cold hardiness but has a lot of Guatemalan in it.

Hello! I top-worked a large seedling to Kampong and this year it's holding it's first fruit. Mine look way more pear shaped than the one in your photo and other pics I've seen of the variety - have you seen this shape in Kampong before? Also, any hints on when to know if they're ready to pick? With Pollack we usually just wait for them to starts dropping.

Wow six months is a long time! I think the longest I've waited was like three. Still wondering about my original question though... anyone...?

Yes I agree it's hard not to be excited but I've actually come to have the opposite reaction as I've never had an early pusher take. Now if there's movement in the first week i actually write that graft off. I'd still like to know though where's an approximate cutoff time for the assumption that there's no interaction between rootstock and scion. When can I look at a still-green scion and think it *could* be getting some juice from the rootstock now?

Hey grafting gurus, how long after grafting can we reasonably presume that there might be communication between the rootstock and the scion? I assume any scion activity in the first week is coming from the scion alone. So when more or less does that assumption stop being correct?

My 2 cents on the M4, I tried it for the first time this year we got over 20 fruit from 3 grafts I did 3 years ago. I was excited for coconut flavor but the only coconut I got from the M4 was aroma - there's definitely a strong hit of coconut in the aroma (once you cut it open - before that no smell at all which is really weird if the only mango you know is Haden which has a powerful, heavenly scent when ripe). But in the flavor I got citrus notes, maybe some piņa colada especially near the shoulders. The flesh is sweetest at the shoulders and by the skin. Delicious mango.

The one I picked is yellowish near the stem. It was somewhat shaded but others I have in full sun are already looking more colorful. I think sun exposure is a relevant variable.

This is M4. All the M4s I've seen are pretty green when ripe. This tree flowered in December so it seems to be earlier here, or at least this year! This is also its first flowering so maybe that has something to do with it.

Thank you for the responses! I actually picked it yesterday, having inspected it following the advice in the video Akin provided above. The shoulders were definitely more bumpy, the stem dark, but it was the lenticels that convinced me they were almost completely brown. So now I wait! I do have several more to work with so more chances to practice. Fingers crossed! :)

My guess is full / raised shoulders, darkened lenticels and browning stalk = mature ready to pick.

Loved this video btw thank you! Super informative and fun! :)

Me too I'm waiting for all the M4S whisperers in the group to chime in! The shoulders on this one look pretty full to me. Chris at TT talks about a "stretched bottom" though and I can't figure out what that means. Also this one does have sort of a yellow tinge to the green... I don't know!

Hi all. This is my first year with M4 fruit. This one pictured was the first to put on size and now is giving me vibes. But I have no experience and would love to pick at the closest to right time possible. What do the experts say?

Brad, that's about the only kind of graft I do now a day. Easy, quick, works.
Yep, me too. I use it for avocado, mango, sapodilla, mulberry, everything. I usually don't top the branch/rootstock until the graft pushes or if it seems to be healed but not pushing. This is the only graft I've had good results with.
