I have heard cats hate citrus smell and spraying with orange essence helps.

I grew green varieties and red Malaysian from seeds and they all fruited on year 2 or 3. Seeds from fresh fruit germinate very fast.

How was the Malaysian Red seedling compared to the parent?

I didn't see any difference

Good idea! Just set a vinegar trap.  It might be a Caribbean fruit fly here. Will see if  i trap anything.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Loquat fruit fly
« on: March 04, 2023, 08:27:49 AM »
I enjoyed my loquat golden nugget for a few years and suddenly i have fruit flies so bad that there is nothing left to eat last a few years. I am thinking about cutting the tree down. Maybe it will reduce their population since i feel like its a breeding ground and it will effect other trees. Is there another loquat variety that ripening earlier when fruit flies are not active?
Please share your thoughts!

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Re: Best fake spinach for FL summer
« on: February 28, 2023, 12:09:16 AM »
I found tatsoi to be a great spinach replacement. Grows in florida great and was the last to bloom when got hot.

I have not tried it, but I have heard people call it "vitamin green." I guess its actually suposed to be better for you than spinach. Its on the mustard side of the barissica genus with Bok/Pok Choy. Is it pungent like mustard greens or mild like choy?
When the weather was cooler, it had no specific taste like spinach. Then it got older or hot weather, it started getting mustard greens taste. It still the closest taste  to spinach i tried.

I didn't think any of them are seedless if there is a male?
How big are the seeds? Were the fruit enjoyable with the seeds?
Some of them do not set fruit without male around. The seedless one should be able to do it but if male is around they will have seeds.
I found their seeds easy to chew compare with passion fruit that I can't eat with seeds or some guava seeds are too hard for me. With che fruit is being chewy, seeds are not possible to separate from flesh.

I will trim my che in a month and could trade cuttings with you.
I have male and female of unknown variety (fruited, very good), and norris has not fruited yet.
Ana
Did the fruit have seeds?
I would like to buy/trade for some cuttings when you trim

thanks
The one that fruited has seeds. Norris is supposed to be seedless.
I am not sure i will have that many cuttings but i will pm you if i have.

Do they come true from seeds? I bought seeds and 2 actually germinated and grow well.
Ana

How long did they take to germ?

A few weeks after 2 months in refrigerator

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fruit trees I gave up on
« on: January 10, 2023, 06:23:23 PM »
FruitGrower and Flgarden, what problems did you have with the trees, e.g., growth habit, disease, etc.? Thanks!

P.S. if my coffee plants go, I'll add that to the list of trees I gave up on . . .
Mine were growing a little in the spring and then no growth for the rest of the year and eventually bark was unhealthy looking, cracks, looking stunted. Eventually died.
I have a mango from a root sucker of a tree grown from seed and gave tasty mangos. That one grows like weed fast. Maybe i just pick wrong CC.

I had a large feijoa that was covered in blooms every spring for years and not a single fruit set.
