Damn, I had always assumed they were all self-fruitful.  Needing TWO giant thorny tippy hazards kills any lingering thoughts I had about trying to grow these again.  Probably just not a good fit for a greenhouse

After nearly 20 years growing these vines, just grow S8. It'll do great in your GF, and is self pollinating. Typically only one spine per areola, so it's not as thorny as the others. If you need a few cuttings, let me know and I'll send you out some. Just pay shipping. I'd be leery to follow any of the information on YouTube or Facebook. Lot of misinformation out there from those mono croppers trying to make a buck.

Yes, you can fruit them in 10 gallons. You'll be limited in fruit production but can make it happen. I've fruited in 5 gallon nursery pots. Lot of fruit drop but it's doable.

Hey Tru how are you (sorry I like rhymes)- The S8/Sugardragon cuttings in the picture I posted are curvy because those ones were growing over our wall and high up on the trellis. When they’re on a trellis they will bend and curve once they start to grow over the top of the trellis. The ones that hang low grow pretty much straight.

I’ve also heard Voodoo Child may be the same as S8/Sugardragon as well, our Voodoo Child vines and fruit look identical to our S8’s.

My recollection is that S8 and voodoo child were part of the genetic testing project from the UCI researchers and found to be different. Flowers were a bit different as well.

it may even originate from spicy exotics, they’re on Instagram and they seem legit; HUGE dragonfruit collection. Been posting the same farm since 2017

fr it’s not the same thing, compare my cutting with FV Fruit Freaks post S8 is more curvy

spicyexotics sells both and they have the same difference in curves

edit; read the description and see what you mean by tropical nursery so scratch my first few words

This is a better discussion for the dragonfruit thread, but I'll respond to your statement. People, have and will continue to sell genetically identical plants that are passed off as a new cultivar through frivolous or completely innocent means. If you want to blow your mind, go check out the fig aficionados, plenty of controversy over there. So, it is always a good idea to do your own due diligence to verify.

As for the picture comparison, you were advertising a new section of vine growth. Right now, that is less than 2 months growth - it's still immature. What FV Fruit Freak was selling is at least 1 year old vine. You know because of the flowers it had on it and the darker pigment. It is much older growth than yours. Curves mean nothing for this comparison.

If you want to continue the discussion, start this over on the dragonfruit thread. To the OP, take Brad up on his offer. Odds are, someone will just sell you S8 and say it's Neon!

Neon is the same vaiety as sugar dragon and S8.  Its all the same plant.  I can sell you a couple pieces if you want some.  I have both varieties and they are the same thing.

Its my favorite one.

You haven't noticed any differences in the plants at all? Growth, flowers and fruits all the same?

It would be nice to know which "nursery" in California Spicy Exotics acquired this from. Then growers can verify there was actually a seedling that was grown that exactly resembles S8. Brad is stating they are the SAME plant, just renamed.

Instead, I doubled up on Dr. Earth Bud and bloom since it contains a bit of nitrogen.

I kind of go wacko with fertilizer for DF as they're pretty much impossible to burn. Last year there was so much slow release in some pots you couldn't see soil anymore. The chicken manure seems to do really positive things overall so I start the season with that and then move onto synthetics. Once it's warm, I'll switch to KoolBloom which is 2-45-28 and I'll use about 1tbsp per gallon and water that in from watering cans. There's not much point in throwing P at them till it's consistently hot, but they seem to grow vegetatively nicely when cooler and have lots of food.

essentially killing about 40% of the vines

Was this due to our cold and rainy winter? Or you just hacked them back for space / weight concerns?

I have a Cosmic Charlie that must be nearing 1000lb on the trellis and I know it's going to break it one day.
Yes, my pattern is similar. I still have a bunch of hydro nutes I use starting around July.

Plants were destroyed last year after my neighbor used a tree trimming company to tidy up his palm trees. Bunch of massive seed pods fell all over them. Funny thing is, he had to cut them down a few months later because the palm trees were infested with beetles. Of course, the tree company told him after they trimmed the trees.

Yes I'm up on the coast, same area.  My largest set out a 1st bud ever but aborted probably because of the cool grey weather all month.  I see a couple more buds popping up so I am hoping the sun gets out enough to make those hold.
Thanks. Yeah, we usually get afternoon sun this time of year but it was still 65 and cloudy all day today! I'll need to add some more fertilizer once it heats up again.
I dosed all my plants with chicken manure and then a bunch of vigoro slow release and they are blasting off like crazy and have just one lone flower bud. It's ok, I really need to rebuild my canopy after losing around 30% of it to snow this winter. I will hit them hard with strong flowering nutrient after they put on some weight again.

I really should have added more manure this year after the large hack they took last year, essentially killing about 40% of the vines. Instead, I doubled up on Dr. Earth Bud and bloom since it contains a bit of nitrogen.

I was excited to see a lot of blooms early this year....then May gray hit hard here in San Diego. Very cool weather for the past couple of weeks. About 30% of the blooms are dying because the lack of heat/sun. For anyone that is within 10 miles of the coast in Socal, are you experiencing the same?

63
Probably a rat. They eat my lemons that way

64
What's the thickness of those seedlings? It's hard to tell from the photo. I'm going to trim some of my sweet tart once it warms up in a couple weeks. I can de-leaf them now to start pushing. But, some are thick.

65
This is a great idea, cheaper then Etsy. Your website mentions "from reputable and trusted sellers". How are you going to manage that?

I used to drain my large kill bag that was full of ice/blood/scales after tuna fishing onto my lemon trees. I never needed to fertilize then and they LOVED the stuff.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Inducing flowering in pomegranate
« on: May 22, 2023, 12:20:44 AM »
I'd assume the chemical composition is completely different in your pot vs ground. Pomegranates will thrive on poor quality soil. That may have been the case in the pot, vs a nutrient rich ground. The plant might have been quite rootbound, and is now focused on root production and vegetative growth. Wonderful grows quite large. Might try an organic 0-10-10 or so fertilizer drench, then withhold water until you notice the plant is stressed.

I add pumice to all my potted and raised bed plants. Have been for 20 years. As mentioned above, You can find it in large bags agricultural and animal feed supply stores. Otherwise you can get it a little more expensive at the plethora of hydroponic shops. At $10 for 5 gallons is a bit of a rip off, but understandable if you need small quantities.

First year tasting from grafts from the last 2 years, so just enjoying some of the possibilities.

Clockwise from left: a solo Peluche, Argelino, Gold Nugget, Mogi, Harvest, Tori, Vista White

Clockwise from top left: Gold Nugget (30g), Mogi (34g), Argelino (67g), Peluche (116g), Tori (55g), Vista White (50g)

Pretty awesome. Interesting that they all appear to be the same seed to flesh ratio.

Alright, I'll bite. I'll go with Nuggets. Lakers were my last LA team I still rooted for until they got that arena renamed.

*********************UPDATE ON ADAM AKA AKME GARDENS ***********************************

He just texted me saying he was in the hospital the entire time!

I had a feeling that is where he was!

He recovering and trying to catch up with orders now with help with a family member!

He said he will start shipping soon!

I knew there was something strange when you started a new thread in the tropical fruit discussion section. The Great Loquat Ponzi Scheme keeps on scheming.  What a joke.

Thank you for the important reminder. Brad did mention getting them wet on one of his avocado topworking videos. I couldn't help but to comment on it 😀.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Big problem with bees
« on: May 16, 2023, 05:39:35 PM »
Previously mentioned bee keeper removal = low kill of workers. But queen will grow more worker bees rapidly to replace what is lost when relocated.

No kill & Getting them to leave without beekeeper: 1. Set sprinkler to stay on dropping water on bee colony and open grill. They will leave fast if no hive with babies and just landed and starting to build. May take a few days to 2 weeks if hive has significant comb with babies.

Almost Total Kill::: 1.... Use 4 oz. kitchen soap to a gallon of water and spray onto colony during the night. This is a slow kill taking over an hour and they will sting while slowly passing away. (They will also come at you if holding a flashlight & a few stings)
2. Almost Any pesticide spray applied during the night when all bees are in the hive.
Many people have told me the common flee house canisters when placed upwind will blow over the colony & kill most (similar to the mosquito fogger truck getting too close to a beehive) and a repeat in a week will usually almost wipe it out of living bees.

Why would you kill the bees?! Plus, now he's going to have a bunch of pesticide in his barbecue. 🤔
