Kaz, I am going to send you some of the flagging tape I have.  I want you to try putting it on the union and not use any parafilm on some grafts unions.  And when you tie it off, you put it in a slip knot so it can be pulled off super easy.  It's so much easier to deal with and the tape has the perfect amount of stretch in it.  If you over tighten it breaks at just the right tightness.  It will get quite tight but not over tight.

I know you are probably fairly set in your methods but at least give it a shot on a few pieces.

I bought a 12 pack of it years ago and still have a lot of it sitting around.

I also bought some of it in neon pink and started using that instead of green so it is easier to see.  I was missing some grafts and forgetting to remove tape because the green is not as obvious.

I bought a box of those ones I posted and got em in an Aglis Box. I prefer non-perforated honestly, especially when its almost 50% more for perforated. Dang!

Im also not a fan of perforated.

Brad, I would suggest Fino de Jete. It is between A and B pattern.  Could send you cuttings.

I have one of those but it has small bumps.  It was a la verne tree so maybe it is not the real variety.  They seem to sell a lot of mislabeled trees.  My fino de jete has a very slight bit of grain like a pear texture.  Does that sound right?  Also brix is not quite as high as others.

I noticed the trees I have in the A shape are the sweetest.  I have various trees with all of the shapes except the pure finger print impressa type.

I get near perfect take rates using just the flagging tape on the unions.

Brad, what is flagging tape? Is that the green tape sold in garden centers for tying plants?

No that is tree tape and is too thick and stiff.  It is Presco brand Texas flagging tape 1 - 3/16"

It needs to be the Texas logo one.  Presco makes a cheaper one without the Texas logo and it is not as good.

I do use buddy tape on the scion and then just the flagging tape on the unions. I have done hundreds of grafts this way on cherimoya and avocado and stone fruit and literally get nearly 100% takes since doing it this way.  My result was not as good with parafilm because of the cracking issue.  The dry weather here may make the parafilm Crack easier than other more humid areas.  Buddy tape never cracks.  The only issue is it is a pain to remove later.  They claim it self degrades but that's a lie.  Buddy tape needs to be removed after the union heals.  And the reason to use flagging tape instead of buddy tape on the union is because it is very strong and holds tighter than buddy tape or parafilm.  And it can be easily removed to check the graft union and reapplied and loosened etc.

Hope that helps.

Brad, did you want to graft my unknown variety, it has the finger print pattern and fruis are large (over 1 lb). I will trade you some cuttings for the guava cuttings.

Yes please.  Thanks

Ok thanks Mark.  I got those ones from you already.  The trees are still small and have not produced yet.  I have a row of new trees that are 3-4 years old now and may hold fruit this year.  A lot of them were grafted with stuff from you 2 years ago.

Hi Mark, I am looking for pure impressa type cherimoya.  Are any of the ones you are selling fingerprint type with no seed protrusions?

Like the one in this photo type B.

I quit using parafilm because it cracks before the grafts are healed.  I get near perfect take rates using just the flagging tape on the unions.  It doesnt crack and it comes off super easy.

As far as permeability specs etc of different tapes, those probably go out the window when you wrap your union in multiple layers.

I don't think the issue you are seeing is water getting into the graft.  If you pulled the tape tight over it it isnt leaking.  I think maybe you just are not getting a tight bond on the unions.  You need to use something stronger to hold the unions together tight.

I agree 100%. I was going to join in on the buy, just wanted to make sure that I knew what I was buying before I made the purchase. I have not seen 60mm or 60 M available anywhere, asked for clarification, and someone got super salty and butthurt that they do not knew their units of measurement. It was not a typo as 60mm was mentioned more than once. I'd rather not have any dealings with super emotional people that get triggered when they realize that they do not know the difference between M and mm. Most adults have enough common sense to know this..... ah well, I'll just place my own order. Cheers

Lol.  Yes

Most of the rolls are 25milimeters x 30 meters long but they do make a 60meters roll also and that is what has been sold here in other group buys.

I thought it was salty too.

Thats why I just buy the 25$ 30M long roll on ebay direct from japan and avoid the hastle.

That was the shortest pre order window ever.

I don't need any tape, I just was surprised how this thread ended.

"It really is depressing to think that if you wanted good production you'd have to keep adding inputs forever."

How can you expect to constantly take from the ground but not add something back in?  That does not seem depressing to me, it seems kind of obvious.

Moisture retention is necessary otherwise the plant cells will dry up and die and grafts will fail.  That is a necessary feature.  What you dont want is air pockets where lots of water can collect.  You want it to be relatively free of voids.

If the grafts are failing and you feel they were done properly, it is possibly a timing issue.  Cherimoya grafts seem to work best around March or April.

No I am not selling more scions now sorry the trees are blooming and it is not easy to find good bud wood.  Lamb is completely budded out already.

Does anyone have a photo of an aravaipa tree?  Like one that is large enough to make fruit in decent health?

Kaz, your pics from october 2022 look lije a box of bacon fruit.  The thin skin, the stringy at the bottom of the seed.  The slant on the bottom of the fruit, the shape of those seeds.  It looks just like bacon.

You were not shy with that rootball.   :)

Indeed, hopefully nobody had a heart attack watching that.  We are a week later and tree is fine. Watered it three times this week. We'll see how long it takes to start pushing.

I usually lightly break up the roots on mine.  Not like you did, but whatever works.  I think its funny people say dont touch the roots etc on avocado then watch your video and like you said, the tree is fine.

A lot of my trees get this also.  Especially some variety more than others.  I think it just naturally grows on avocado bark.  Theres not much you can do about it.  It does look bad but does not seem to affect the tree.

Did you take a pic of the plant?

I noticed after top working my 2 sir prize trees that they are both growing way slower than all the other varieties that got top worked.  It is a small sample set of only 2 tree but I am pretty certain it is the interstock issue.

Who knows long term?  But right now it sure seems like it is dwarfing the sharwils that got grafted onto them.  Which I am really annoyed by.  So if you want to grow sharwil and kwep it small you could try sir prize interstock.
