Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: mycorrhizal inoculant
« on: September 21, 2017, 04:22:34 AM »
Yes black pots exposed to sun during a hot summer will kill many microorganisms. If the temperature outside is 35C, a small pot will have 50-60C in direct sun. It is actually better for the substrate to be dry rather than wet. A good strategy would be to reinoculate the small and medium pot before the winter.
A cheap method to increase the spore count is to grow containers with grass in the spring and inoculate them. Grass is easily colonizied, and by the autumn will will have many spores attached. Just simply take out the roots, chop them and mix them with the soil in the pots.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Key Lime uprooted, survival odds?

This is a very strong tree, and it will survive. They only way for it to die is overwatering. Just trim it, and replant it.

Thanks for your replies. I know about those two companies, however they sell small seeds packs are are quite expensive comparing germination rate/price. None of those companies make any germination tests.
Normal germination rate for C pubescens is 40% if the seeds are fresh, less then a month. As for C stipulata germination is only 10% for less than a month and it can take up to 240 days.
So I am looking for fresh seeds from just eaten fruits.

I am looking for Mountain papaya Vasconcellea pubescens known also like papayuelo or chamburo. I need fresh seeds. I want to use them as a rootstock for papaya.
The rare  toronche Vasconcellea stipulata would be appreciated as well.

Hi,
i am looking for fresh seeds as well. Unfortunately most of the seeds I got the didn't germinate around 300 seeds from 3 different vendors. If they are order than a month they take a lot of time to germinate.
Mountain papaya/ chamburo is Vaconcellea pubescens.

I understand what your point. I just want to tell you a narrow polytunnel is losing heat many times more then a square poly greenhouse, because the exposed surface area is bigger.
I know you have the plants already in ground, but it would make sense to replant them in a square then rebuild the greenhouse. I would get much warmer and cheaper to heat it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Strawberry Papaya - Not Flowering
« on: August 31, 2017, 07:00:24 AM »
Thanks Buddy,

I always thought papayas love heat, I will try to transplant them in winter time around Nov.

Yes you are right they love the heat. Transplanting them when it's cold outside is a very bad idea.
The best transplanting time is this: hot summer and look for rainy days, few hour before an expected rain, transplant it. The science behind this is complicated, it has to do with high humidity and low pressure, which triggers the plant to form new roots. Also don't scratch the roots. They contain symbiotic microorganisms which will kill the plant if the root is wounded.

Oscar specified strawberry papaya is aka sunrise papaya

I didn't know about this name. It has nothing to do with strawberry, no taste at all!
Your plant should make flowers as soon as 5 months. This is a hermaphrodite.
If it didn't make the main reason I suspect is a small pot. The second would be little direct light and temperature less than 20C during the night.

I planted few fresh seeds of strawberry papaya about 3 years ago and two survived and are about 5 feet tall now. Wondering why they have not flowered at all. I heard that these flower and fruit within first 12 months based on conditions.

I have them planted on South-West wall planter where it remains warm and in summer heat from stucco reflects on these plants. They get watered twice a week, deep watering.

Any idea what might be wrong?
I don't know about a cultivar "strawberry papaya". Can you be more specific?

Does anyone know how tall is this tree? Is its fruit sweet? I just bough 3 little trees and wonder how long it take to bare fruit?

Can I plant in container and what is the good container size for this variety?

Please share with me your experince with this papaya. Thanks

Cultural practices is the same as any papaya. Seedlings die very easily so you need to take care with watering.
Minimum pot to bear fruits should be 30 litres.
I found optimum is 70 litres. From seed to flowering it takes 5 months here, to bear fruit 8-9 months.

Thank you for sharing the information about this papaya . I am very nervous to take care the seedling right now because I had bought 4 seedlings before and they all died. THis time I will be stingy to water them.

Do you plant this papaya? Is it sweet.? And how tall is the tree when it has fruits?

I grow many papayas, but I've never had this one. Form what I know this hybrid is sterile. Any papaya should star flowering at 75-100 cm. Like I said deep pot will make it grow fast and bloom soon. Unfortunately  winter is coming so expect a very slow growth. TH thing is if you put them in a big container now they will die. You won't be able to control your watering. So I suggest you to transplant them in a 6 litres container until spring, then move them to a big one.

Here's photos of my tunnel that walks down hill from east to west , with Dunstan on west end and Mortan on on east higher end.

Sorry to ask you but why is your green house like a tunnel?
A tunnel like that is losing a lot of heat accuse of the covered area.

A small greenhouse with bottom heating set at 23C, humidity 90%, use of IAA 2g/l and NAA 0.2g/l will give you roots in 2 weeks. Potting mix should be 1 part vermiculite, 1 part peat. Sterilize the peat at 121C, 15 psi for 15 minutes. Vermiculite should be sterile.
This is what I do, success rate 100%.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Babaco
« on: August 26, 2017, 06:29:12 AM »
hello, does it grow from cuttings? I am looking for babaco in Europe, but so far haven't found any nursery selling it...

I will attempt to micro propagate them, but probably will be ready, next year.
Cuttings indeed root easily, but they also root rot fast. any soil contamination will kill them.
You need to cut one plants, from which you have 3-4 cutting, them maybe one cutting will root.

I've been attempting to grow it in San Diego but agree that it does not seem to like sun. One plant in part-day sun died, another is barely alive, but the one I put in shade seems to be doing OK, but they're all very small still. I know of a local nursery that has a fruiting one which does get a good amount of sunlight so maybe they just don't like sunlight when small...

Put a shadow mesh on to filter the sun 35%, they grow very fast in 3 months like 1m. The most important is the soil drainage. They most likely died from root rot, hot weather plus stagnating water is like boiling them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: mango seedling
« on: August 19, 2017, 04:47:01 PM »
Mango seeds germinate best at 30C, in an aerated substrate mix: 50% vermiculite/50% peat is the best.
The top 3cm should be only vermiculite once you plant the seed. Pots must be deep 25cm and narrow, they have a tap root growing fast. Seedlings grow better in smaller a container rather than a big one. Keep the mango growing until the stem is 6-8mm, then you can graft the plant. My seedlings grow during the summer to this size only in 3 months, because of the tropical summers where  temperatures reach 20C at night and 30-35C during the day. Very important is to throw the seed out once is brown.
More heat means more growth. Light is not so important at this stage, in fact they get burnt in direct sun.

Any Babaco growers in Europe?
I found that the plant can take the heat, up to 45C in my green house, but what it doesn't like is strong sun and wind. Plants grown outside had sun burns, and because of the wind the roots get damaged and eventually root rot kicks in.
Also I recommend a minimum size for pots to be 50 litres. In my 25 liters bags, the fruits are smaller.

Does anyone here deal with plant tissue?
Do you know a good micropropagation protocol for Key limes?
Also how long does it take for the clones to make fruit?

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Re: Galangal
« on: August 17, 2017, 04:42:02 PM »
Galangal likes shade, and 3 months of dry season, that is the time when all the nutrients go into the rhizome.
By the way they can be started by seeds also, seeds are rare because no one collects them in their habitat.
