I had a question.  I've read that unsulfured molasses is used to feed the growing bacteria.  Can I use maple syrup instead?  I thought honey might work, except I think honey is antibacterial, which is detrimental.

You can also dry the leaves for tea.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 1 gal fruiting dragonfruit

Here's my 1 gal Phoenix Red Dragonfruit forming a flowerbud.  I'm not a horticulturalist, but I think it depends on the maturity of the source of the cutting.

I get almost 100% germination on seeds.

My tree is still a little small, but I'll offer cutting eventually.

Uni Mart in Artesia sells big moringa(malunggay) cuttings for $15.

Small watercolor brush from a watercoloring set that I got for less than a dollar at Target
Black salsa cup from El Pollo Loco
Scissors to cut half of the petal from the flower to demarcate it as pollinated

Cheap!

I should have seeds available once the bean pods form and mature.  Let me know if you want any.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Plant ID help

I reused some soil and planted some white sage seeds.  Doesn't look like white sage.  I think it could be coccinia sessilifolia.  Any thoughts?

I don't think they are the same

Here's a pic of the segment.  I can take a cutting from it and ship it small flat rate priority box to you.  I also have other dragonfruit varieties that I can try to fit into the same box if you're interested-

Phoenix Red
American Beauty
Physical Graffiti
Purple Haze
Thai Red
Giant Vietnamese

Too small  to take cuttings-
Arizone Purple
Yellow

I'm not really interested in acquiring more varieties of dragonfruit, unless there's an uber-variety that I should have.  Rooted Black Mission & Violette de Bourdeaux fig cuttings would be great!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pine Needle mulch?
« on: July 13, 2012, 05:18:31 PM »
I keep on the lookout for when my neighbors leave their Christmas trees by the curb for p/u.  At night, I drag them back home & later I strip all the branches to be used for mulch.  It makes the soil more acidic & adds nutrients.  One concern I have is if pesticides are used on the trees by commercial growers.

A segment of my Voodoo Child dragonfruit broke off due to the weight.  I can cut it into 3 approximately 1 foot cuttings, if anyone is interested.  If you have something to trade, great, but if not, then that's cool.

Thanks, mangomandan.  I don't think I'll be going to Florida anytime soon.  I wish.  I would love to visit the Fairchild and see all the delicious fruits that don't grow well here, w/o a greenhouse

Pretty soon, you're going to have a yard like Harry's

They were from the San Diego Scion Exchange.  They leafed out pretty good w/ what looked like developing fruits, but they dried up.

I killed off 2 cuttings.  Real bummer

Didn't you order the Silas Wood awhile ago?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Papaya update - Victory, almost
« on: May 20, 2012, 01:29:16 PM »
After almost 3 years, I finally have flowers on my Sunrise papayas.  I've lost many due to cold/rain, but I have 3 that are thriving.  They have no protection.  They are near the wall on the east/south facing side of the house.  Perhaps they have a cold-resistance gene.

I like it when they have the old dragonfruit on clearance.  Doesn't compare to fresh from the garden, but mine aren't producing a lot at the moment.

Thanks for sharing your experience w/ Top Tropicals, Bestday.  I've been meaning to order from them, but have been hesitant because of other's bad experiences dealing with them.

BTW, I live in Cerritos, so I'm very close to you.
