Temperate Fruit Discussion / More temperate, less tropical for zone8

These bad cold fronts that seem to be coming more regularly now have me thinking I need to plant fruit and nut trees that actually are for my zone, or a bit colder. My wife and I spent the better part of 2 days protecting our sub and tropicals before each of those events. If we hadn't had sufficient notice we would have lost most of them. Our land is technically zone 9a, but we got down to 10°F 2 years ago and just had 12°F last week. Of course we are on a ridge, so the wind tends to howl as well. Our humidity is about like central Florida and our Summer sun is brutal.
 I already have the usual plums, peaches, poms, jujubes, persimmons etc. I'm wondering about less common trees/plants that can take some cold. Some stone fruit crosses maybe? I think we get too hot for hazelnuts? What have y'all had success with under similar conditions? Thanks! D

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Canna edulis stalk color

I have been growing these for a few years. I also have ornamental cannas in the yard. The original edulis have red stalks. I've collected their seed and propagated them. I now have cannas that have green stalks like the ornamental ones growing in some of the pots. Could these be edulis, just with green stalks or maybe a hybrid? Should they still be edible? Thanks! D

Artichoke are commonly grown for their flowers and I've read that cardoons are grown for their stalks. Are cardoons just artichokes that don't bloom or make inferior flowers? Are artichoke stalks edible like cardoons? Thanks, D

Hi Folks, Before the whole covid thing started some of us were talking about getting together to swap plants, stories and maybe lies about plants... I think it's time we move on. I suggest we set a time early this Summer and proceed. I'm as done with masks as Brad, but if a mask makes someone more comfortable wear away! Anyway, it might be best to take this to p.m.s so we don't waste everyone else's bandwidth. Let me know! D

  There was discussion of pringle's sapote being cold hardy a while back. The best known tree was in Houston, at a nursery. It was said to have endured 13°F. That was a mature tree.
  I have a small one planted in S. Texas. It is on a ridge, exposed to whatever comes. In our last taste of "real" Winter, the 3 foot seedling was exposed to close to single digits with just a small frame over it. I had rigged heat lamps, but as was widely reported, we had no power for about 5 days due to blackouts and a power pole down close by.
  I thought it was toast, just like our citrus, but it is putting out new growth! More evidence that they are quite cold hardy.

I picked up a good sized chunk of malanga at the market and would like to grow it. I searched it and the procedures seem to conflict from site to site. Some say to cold stratify, others say just plant it. Plant it deep, plant it shallow. Is it like taro...just stick it in some soil and it will grow? It's got a bunch of eyes and is large enough that I think I can start 2 or 3 plants with it. How do y'all do it? Thanks, Dan

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Changsha Tangerine Seed

Hi All, I'd like to get some of this seed. Texas A&M says it is cold hardy to below 20F. Obviously many factors are involved, so mileage may vary...I guess it's legal to ship seed to Texas? If so, I can buy or trade.

Does anyone have experience with either of these Autocarpus?Gongshanensis was listed as being grown in NW Yunnan and Nanchuanensis in Chongquing provinces in China. From a quick search it looks like both areas are similar to a zone 8/9 with some annual light freezes.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Almond heat tolerance

I have hall's hardy, mission and non pariel almonds in my orchard that have been growing nicely for me. They are about 4 years old now and a few put on blooms last spring. When it got really hot this summer (+/-100F) they dropped most of their leaves and just survived. I increased their water and that seemed to help some, but not all. The leaves were green, no chlorosis. The weather is cooling now, so I'm hoping they will recover.
I know some of you are in Cali and probably close to the surviving orchards there. Do they hold up to high heat for months there if they get enough water?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Nitrogen Fixers

Hi Folks, I'm wondering if and what you employ in this capacity. I have a good example ( I think) of a nurse nitrogen fixer benefitting my figs. I have a row of figs that runs East/ West for about 100 feet. The two bushes on the Eastern end of the row have a mesquite between them and offset to the South a few feet. The Bush closest to the mesquite is about 10 feet tall and 14 feet in diameter. The next bush is about 8 feet tall and 6 feet in diameter. The next is proportionally smaller and all the rest small as well. They all get the same irrigation and feeding.
I initially thought it was the modicum of shade the mesquite affords the figs, and that may be a factor, but now I think it is primarily nitrogen. I have been collecting nitrogen fixers of various types for the last year or so and am planning to interplant them in my fruit rows.
What do you use? Any other examples like mine?

Hi All, Love this forum! I have learned so much from lurking!😁 I have 2 Pakistan mulberries that have been the ground about 9 years now. For the last 5 or so they set tassels and look like they are going to fruit, but the tassels shrivel and drop. There are some large non fruiting mulberries not far from them. Could the non fruiting ones be causing the lack of fruit?
