Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Ube in Southern California

Ever since trying Ube ice cream I’ve been on a quest to grow the vine and make my own ice cream...I planted a vine in the spring of last year, 2022. It grew nicely and then died back when it stared getting cold, I believe in December some time. The vine is now completely dead (above ground at least) and I was thinking of digging it up to see if there’s any Ube down there, however, I think I’ll kill it because I’d have to dig up the roots, I think? Does anyone know when to harvest Ube in So Cal? And if you can keep the vine alive after harvest? Thanks

I have Mexican and key limes on our dwarf Myer tree. The Mexican limes turn yellow before fully ripe, the key limes stay green, not sure if it has to do with cross pollination or what. Also the key limes are sweet with that nice lime flavor, the Mexicans are a more balanced lemon/lime flavor. I’ve also noticed the Key limes produce less than the Mexican limes.

This variety is a different variety than any of the other one going around. It is also an established tree. There is a huge benefit of buying an established tree vs trying to grow one form bare root. I was part of the last group order and got something like 23 trees. Guess what I have to show for those... 2 male trees infected with RKN.
Has anyone been following this Yangmei auction on ebay? Current bid is $3,000 is it because of the variety, hype, or demand? maybe all of the above. Im shocked, glad I got in on this group order.
How do you know your established trees aren’t infected with RKN??? Let’s see the roots.

« on: January 20, 2023, 11:48:01 PM »Only one of my trees (DK) showed possible signs of nematodes. It was just one bulbous root that I cut off. Other than that, the trees look really nice! I also soaked in B1 Start for about an hour and watered the soil with it. I've had great results using it in the past for other trees. The plants skipped transplant shock and new growth would appear just a couple days later.
Already in their new homes. I know these plants are cold tolerant once they're established, but is it ok to leave them out at night while they're recuperating? My lows are in the 40-45F for the next week.
You may consider a heating mat. I had success doing exactly what you’re doing but with a heat mat underneath, also make sure you have a bunch of holes in the bag and some air flow.

I just picked up a few trees for my friend in San Diego and some of the trees definitely have nematodes although much less than the previous group buy. It would be best practice to treat all your trees as if they’re infected even if they don’t have the galls on them because they most likely contacted contaminated trees.
Here’s a few pictures of the nematode galls from this order.
A few of the smaller trees are pretty dried dried up and one of the smaller trees I got for my friend has the entire top starting to wrinkle which isn’t a good sign.
This sort of thing is to be expected for such a large shipment of trees and that is why many people ordered extra trees in case some don’t make it.
The nematode thing sucks as well but if you’ve been following the Yangmei threads/post, you probably figured that just about all the trees shipped from overseas has the potential to carry nematodes.
I highly recommend that everyone treat their trees as if they are infected so that they don’t spread these nasty bugs in their garden.

Hello fellow Kadsura growers, hoping someone can tell if these are flower buds or vegetative growth buds in the picture below, buds are reddish in color and covering the entire vine from top to bottom. Vine is about three years old and has been in the ground a couple years. Thanks.

Ya Kevin maybe selected varieties like Nazemetz are self fertile. Rootstock is clean, no flowering or anything.
