Ultra tropical is not for Cherimoya
« on: May 06, 2014, 06:23:50 AM »
Hi all, I have been growing Cherimoya in singapore for about 2 years. I started it off from seed and it has grown slowly but surely into a healthy 1.5m plant. I am just curious what will be the fate of it in the coming years? Other than it won't ever fruit? Will it still be a healthy tree and maybe have flowers, but keep dropping?  Anyone out there has made such a silly experiment like mine before?

Silly experiments is what we do.

If you do have good growing conditions for it, it should be fine, except without a cold snap it probably won't flower.

I don't think I've ever seen a chill rating for cherimoyas. I know some are supposed to do better in more tropical environments.

A neighbor here has a tree for over 20 years, a couple years ago finally set a fruit, that he couldn't try
Cause when was about to get ripe, was blown over by a storm, I guess there's not enough chilling hours here, lat 21*

Jet, I noticed you mentioned flower dropping?  Please hand pollinate your flowers and that should help you have some fruit.  Here is a video on how to do that:

Also provide plenty of fertilizer with Boron and Zinc, such as in a professional 8-2-12 Palm Fertilizer.

I planted cherimoya here at 19 degrees north, and they do flower, and occasionally set fruit. But trees are slowly declining with age in health. Singapore at 1 degree north will be even more difficult on cherimoya. Unless you have some higher elevation there? Probably could be made to fruit at 1000 meters or more there.

Is this a good blanket statement for atemoyas too?

it is a good statement for fruit tree fertilizer in general.  This is why I have tried to stress the importance of a fertilizer's minor package.
