Whitman Langsat?
« on: January 06, 2015, 10:40:12 AM »
This budwood came to Hawaii via Florida, I believe from either Richard Campbell or Steve Brady.  Not sure why it's named after Bill Whitman, most likely he brought it to Florida.  Anyone else have it?  It's now about 15 years old and is finally fruiting a bit.  The fruits are quite large, so maybe a Duku Langsat?

Large size and round shape, that could well be a Duku or Longkong. Langsat fruit is more oval than round, small size and thinner skin.

If it has seeds and the seeds are bitter when bitten into it is duku or duku-langsat. Doesn't look like a longkong. Longkongs have almost no seeds, no latex, and the very few seeds have no bitterness.
If you look at Whitman's book 5 Decades With Tropical Fruits you can probably learn more about what it really is.

Good idea regarding Whitman's book.  I've looked at it in the past and nothing stood out, but I wasn't looking specifically for this.  It's not a Longkong.  Longkong fruit are definitely better.  :)

I would agree it's not Longkong, at least the version we refer to as Longkong. In my opinion the clustering doesn't look the same either.

Big island grower... wanted to see if you ever took any follow up pictures of this tree fruiting?  also how did the fruits turn out?   it was around a year ago when you posted this so i assume the tree is fruiting again now?   I have a grafted Longkong from David Frenz in hilo and also a Langsat from Plant it Hawaii... (not grafted)  i'm excited to see how the fruits of these two trees turn out (in 10 years that is)
With 3 acres of prime real estate for growing tropicals... why not create my own garden of eden?? Work in progress

You're in for a treat.  The fruit from the Grimal farm back in the late '90s were superb, but could never get the seedlings to enthusiastically grow.  Very much not houseplant friendly.
