the plant which is 100,000 times sweeter than sugar
« on: March 11, 2015, 07:13:18 AM »
Ketemf grows in the tropical forests of West Africa. It is sweeter than sugar 100000 times! This substance is going to be sweet even dissolved at a concentration of 10 g per ton of water! This plant jackfruit or another?

Not sure what the trick is for sprouting those things -- I have had seeds for over a year in sphagnum -- not sprouting but not rotting either.  I don't give up unless they start to rot, though.  (So a warning for anyone looking to try some from seed.)  I have some Gnetum africanum seeds I got about the same time & one is just starting to sprout now so maybe there is still hope.

Ok, I'm confused.  Why is there a picture of jackfruit (an Artocarpus) appearing in a discussion about katamfe (Thaumatococcus danielii), a herbaceous plant & relative of gingers?  Jackfruit is not even remotely related -- it is a large tree, occurs in Asia, and does not have the extreme sweetness.

I used to grow this here. Then they got big and I had to give them away to people with more space.

HIfarm, search on the Internet gives this picture along with the name Ketemf. Therefore, it is unclear what kind of fruit is Ketemf.

Maybe I am using a different search engine but I am not seeing pictures of jackfruit coming up for "ketemf".  The plant you are inquiring about is spelled katamfe, ketemfe, and even katempfe but I have not seen it spelled "ketemf".  As herman pointed out, it is Thaumatococcus danielii certainly not Artocarpus heterophyllus.

Don't trust everything you see on the internet -- a lot of it is wrong.
