Fertilizer for Cherimoya Tree
« on: February 03, 2012, 02:00:26 PM »
Hi, Just wondered how do I fertilize 10-yr old cherimoya tree and what fertilizer do I use? I want heavy production next season and would like to feed the tree accordingly.

I use an organic 10-10-10 granule on a lot of my trees including annonas.  I apply it once a month around the drip line except during winter.

Nice fruits this year BTW

There is Dynamite plant food granules w/micronutrients, dynamiteplantfood.com.  Osmocote is another option, but it doesn't have micronutrients.

A weak application of liquid fertilizer/fish emulsion once a month would work, too.

how do I apply? the tree trunk is about 12" in diameter and I am not sure where to put down the fertilizer as roots probably have spread wide all over.

If I remember correctly, cherimoyas have long taproots and not that much lateral roots.  Applying near the trunk would be satisfactory.

I always try to apply fertilizer, even organic fertilizer, away from the trunk of my tree.  I would apply the fertilizer near the drip line or slightly within the drip line.  I would suggest giving it less nitrogen and more P-K.  I like to give my plants some E.B. Stone Organic fertilizer, I think its something like "Bloom" and the numbers are 0-10-10.  You may also want to give it dilute feeding of Fish emulsion and kelp emulsion for the minors and trace.

Cherimoyas can grow very large in a season if given too much Nitrogen.  The P-K should also help to sweeten up the fruit.

I have a 10-10-10 for rose, would it also be good for Cherimoya? I heard that it does not hurt to feed it when its dormant so fertilizer has had a chance to dissolve into the soil. Does it makes a difference weather its for rose or pean as long as NPK are whats followed?

You should read the label carefully.  They may have added minors, trace elements or other things geared towards roses but it shouldn't hurt your Cherimoya.

I'm figuring fertilizing your cherimoya tree during dormancy won't be a problem because of how brief the dormancy is.

I stop fertilizing my chirimoyas they grow way too fast. However, I water them everyday when they are flowering.

I also fertilize with something like 10-10-10 with micro-nutrients, mainly during spring-summer. Nitrogen apparently does not inhibit fruit production, but makes the tree grow a lot. Maybe that could be a problem for container growing and small yards, but thats not may case..

I am pushing my trees, I get total defoliation and some branch die back each year on the in ground trees.
