Anyone heard of Don Ramon Avocado?
« on: June 20, 2017, 06:22:53 AM »
Hi everyone,

I ordered a grafted Avocado from Puerto Rico with the name Don Ramon.  I ordered it from a place called Proganics.  I can;t seem to find much info on the interwebs, hoping you experts can help me out here and tell me a little more about the variety.  Here is the link to anther one for sale:

www.ebay.com/itm/GRAFTED-Organic-Avocado-Aguacate-plant-by-Prorganics-/152473647479?hash=item2380233977:g:5OkAAOSwNSxVLaka]

What other varieties would do well here in St. Croix?  I also have Russell and Semil 34.

Thank you!

I've seen a variety selling locally called Thomson Red supposedly from Jamaica.  A neighbor planted one this year.  I imagine that any West Indian variety would do well in St. Croix.

Thanks John.  I emailed the Ebay seller and this is what they said:

"Don Ramon variety has this name because a local farmer make this variety by mixing hass and butler. The fruit is more related to butler but with bigger fruit."

So is sounds like this could be a good one, I am very excited to get my first Avos off this tree, its been growing very well.

Here's some info on Butler:BUTLER   (W.I.) P.I.26690 Tree originated 1904 at Miami, FL. Fruit season Aug., Sept.; color, light green; weight, 16-24 ozs.; shape, obovoid; skin, smooth. Seed, medium to large. (CAS Yearbook 1950) Origin, Florida; race, WI; Flowering group A (Lahav & Gazit)(A USDA selection in Florida; fruited in 1909, propagated from 1914 to 1918) pear-shaped; medium-large; skin smooth; seed of medium size, tight in the cavity. Season: Aug.-Sept. No longer grown in Florida. Cultivated in Puerto Rico.(J.Morton)

Hass is pretty well known.  Should be an interesting cross.

Here in Puerto Rico we have over 100 sub Varieties of Wilson. Don Ramon is a seedling from Wilson  (popenoe). Big size wider neck. Taste like Wilson.
