Hamlin x Flying Dragon
« on: May 25, 2018, 03:21:13 PM »
I have recently received budwood of this cross and grafted it on Poncirus. This is actually only my second succesful graft.
However, I can find very little information on it and would be grateful if anyone could share what they know.

cheers

I have it, got the wood from Robert (Zitrusgaertner) in 2012. On own roots it is not enough resistant and grows rather slowly.
In 2013 I low grafted it on poncirus, it is in ground without protection since 2014, no winter  damage up to  now.
It comes probably from a free  pollinated immature seedling of initial hybrid , since only a small number of  leaves are trifoliate.

Approximately 1.5m high, but has not flowered yet.
Best regards,
                       Ilya

At least it is quite hardy, that's a good start:-).
Do you know where the original cross came from?

I really do not know, most probably actual budwood is from Andi Voss plant.
http://www.zitrusgarten.net/homepage/bilder-c/Beschreibung-Z.htm
In a literature there is description of tetraploid hybrid obtained by somatic cell hybridization.

A few days ago, I emailed Andi Voss but haven't got a reply yet. I am curious whether his plant has flowered and how hardy it is up there compared to your place, Ilya.

How thick are the leaves?

University of Florida created a tetraploid plant by combining protoplasts of Hamlin and Flying Dragon.

It is probably another variety, since tetraploid somatic hybrid has only  trifoliate leaves

I can't really tell how thick the leaves are since they have not yet hardened fully.

Hamlin x FD from Andreas Voss is a seedling of this hybrid. He got seeds from Riverside.

I've just received a response from Andreas. Last year, his plant flowered for the first time. Unfortunately, there are no flowers this year. Fruit quality will remain a mystery for at least another year.

However, he said it is extremely coldhardy and unscathed after -12C. (10.4-F). I guess that is quite promising even if the fruit should not turn out to be the best tasting. A small step into the right direction..?

I grew HaminXFD from seed but don't remember who gave it to me. Maybe Andi. I lost the plant years ago. Nice that it still lives with you, Ilya!

Mikke, Roberto, Ilya it means that we have two different FDxHamlin seedlings in Europę. One is Ilya from seedling's Roberto and second from A Voss. Please correct me if I wrong.
What is origin the plants of A.Voss?

A.Voss received seeds from UCRiverside. There are probably several types around.

Andreas Voss once posted the seeds he received from the UCR on his website. If I remember correctly, there should be at least 12 different seedlings...

Has anybody ever had fruit from their plant? Haven't heard from Andreas since my above post from 2018.

My guess is that  the seedlings of Andreas and Robert are  similiar, both  most probably of nucellar origin.

Ilya,
I am quite sure that my seeds came from Andi Voss. He shared what he had got from Riverside with some other people. One of them was me  ;)
