New tree: How long until I can expect Akee fruit?
« on: January 14, 2019, 11:14:31 AM »
I recently got what I'm pretty sure is a seedling ackee. It's in a gallon pot and about 2 feet tall:

UF's guide says seedling ackee trees take between 3 to 6 years to fruit. I don't know how long it took it get this tall though. How long do you think it will take to fruit?

I can't say about a seedling but my air layered tree began to fruit in it's second year. Not too many fruit and squirrels took them they can eat the seeds before the arils ripen. They grow fast you may be surprised.

Seedlings take 4-5 years in our area.  Nice tree that brings toucans to eat the fruit!

It's really come along in a year. Still not sure how long it'll be before I get fruit. Can you guys make a guess based how much foliage there is how long it will probably be to fruit? 1-2 years?

Seems sort of stunted? I have trees in ground that are maybe a year old max that are much bigger. And that's without any water or fertilizer in poor soil. Ackee seem to send their roots down far

I rootpruned the bejeezus out of two before I potted them up in root pruning pots. Both lived and filled out the new pots with a proper rootsystem. I would make sure to open that rootball when you plant. I believe these do better with cross pollination as well.

I have one about your size I've been pulling down the branches and tying them to get horizontal growth for easier picking.
They tend to really grow vertically.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I guess I'll move it to a larger pot.
