Nice work, Kevin! Wow, yours are actually red! The fruits on mine are more purplish, somewhere between your photo and a purple Frederick.

My Red Rover fruits are still maturing on the vine...here's where I'm at now. I do like this variety of passionfruit.

My Red Rover plants are growing in containers.
They are pushed into the back of my greenhouse behind some other plants and I noticed the ripe fruit sitting on the ground.
When it's ripe... it picks itself!

Kevin,
I'm sorry to tell you that you do not have P. 'Red Rover'.  The real P. 'Red Rover' fruits look just like P. 'Frederick'--deep red and egg shalped--but are smaller on average than P. 'Frederick' fruits.  Hopefully the fruit you do have are very tasty to you.

Passionbob the red rover plant kevin has come from me and I got mine from walter andersens and the plant was grown by monterey bay nursery.  I think they use tissue cultures from agristarts.

The fruits are round and have thicker shell than fredrick.  Taste basically the same.  The red rovers dont get sun damaged as easily as fredricks.

Heres the description from CRFG which matches the vine I have.

"Red Rover
Originated in Lincoln Acres, Calif. by Patrick Worley. Kahuna X Brazilian Golden. Medium to large, roundish fruit. Rind an attractive clear red color. Sweet, notably rich flavor with tart overtones,. Good for eating out of hand or juicing. Vine very vigorous, compact and self-fertile."

When I researched 'Red Rover" this YouTube video sold me on it:

Pretty amazing!

I bought cuttings from Brad Spaugh as he stated and they have grown well!
I have no complaints... Totally happy with them.
Thanks for the input!

As I said before, neither of you have the real P. 'Red Rover'.  The plant you are growing is probably a seedling from the original clone.  I obtained my plant from the original plant that Patrick Worley created, so I can describe exactly what the fruit looks like--P. 'Frederick' fruit but on the average a little smaller.  Enjoy what you have if it tastes good.

Sounds like another agristarts mass produced fake like the blue java bananas.  The round red rovers are the clone that every nursery is selling from tissue cultures from agristarts.  Even CRFG has description wrong lol.

Good news this fruit is an improvement over fredrick at least.  At least for growing inland they dont get sun burns as easily.

well, guys, I am not getting into this p*ssing match. However, I do love passion fruit and I am not picky about a proper or improper name if it tastes good.

so Kevin, please let me know how it tastes  ;D

If I add more fence I could use another variety

Ate one last night... it was a typical passion fruit flavor. Beautiful golden coloring... sort of a sparkling, almost lightly carbonated quality to the flavor...
I was impressed by the relatively delicate and thin seed coats... totally chewable and easy to crunch.
In contrast... I've eaten lots of local wild Incarnatas/Maypops with really tough seed coats.

yeah, incarnata has fairly tough seeds.
I have given to first-timers and they have crunched through them, not knowing what else to do. I was like "whoa! don't crunch em!"
of course it's harmless but ruins the experience to chew them, in my opinion.

I am envious of your P. edulis fruits! Maypops are great but they are no true substitute, for me.

hi Tribola

I just watched your maypop and paw paw vids.

if you still want advice for a pawpaw sling, I recommend panty hose. they are quite strong and can handle substantial weight.

Happy Gardening !

"Red Rover" Passion Flowers fruiting and blooming:

Hey Kevin I've had red rovers over the years and they start off red and then go back to purple. I think one year I added soil acidifier and they turned back to red again. Have yours turned purple yet?

And Hey Brad!

What's the story behind blue Java bananas?
