Syzigium oleosum - Blue Lilly Pilly plants

Fast growing yet not invasive. Drought tolerant once established but enjoy regular water to look their best and produce beautiful flowers and fruit. Foliage emits a spicy fruity scent when crushed.

This tree can reach up to 21 feet in a home garden, but can be kept at shrub or hedge height with adequate pruning. They are also great in a container or as a bonsai. They make a perfect screen, windbreak, or shade tree. They like Full sun to part shade but I have given them full shade with no problems.

The blue 1/2" to 1" fruits  taste like a refreshing apple, lightly sweet with hints of lavender and ginger. They are one of the most cold tolerant of the Syzigium family. Hardy to zone 9a. They are related to Rose Apple, Java Plum, Malay apple, and Java Apple and have a similar crispness and flavor. Blue Lilly Pilly berries may be eaten straight off the tree or used to make jams, sauces, syrups, confections and wine.

These plants are seed grown and come in
4” pots roughly 8-12” tall
$10 each plus shipping.

I live about 8 hrs drive from LA and have no other plants for sale at this time. I may post some other things in the fall when things cool down however.

I think the US needs more species of lilly pillies. S. papyraceum, alliligneum, cormiflorum, fibrosum, wilsoni and luemanni would be nice companions for oleosum.

Yes they are some of my local species. The flowering display of most lilly pillys is quite a show and it attracts the bees.

Just chose a random pic to accompany each post. That handsome paw is mine and it is the finest lychee around.

Mine arrived today, looking good and healthy.

Look just like FLnative's, without the fancy repot job.

Thank you very much.

Just did a cold tolerance test with one of these plants last night-

It is in the ground and mulched but we had frost and I will report back on whether or not the plant survives

I’m excited to hear how it goes. They should be cold tolerant to Zone 9a but I would think maybe even more once their trunks thicken up.

Me too! I just ordered one, and I'm smack-dab in the middle of 9a country. We touch 29 degrees every couple years, so just a smidgeon higher lows than Houston

This species has a natural range of about 1800 miles along Australia's eastern coat from latitudes 14s to 35s. Plants from the southerly parts of their range have good cold tolerance.

Well luckily you just sacrificed the extra one. Looks like all the tender new growth bit it but the older mature  growth looks like it turned out okay. You’ll know for sure in a couple more weeks. Also these might be more cold hardy once they’ve had a chance to thicken up. These are just wee babies.

The post office delivered my plants to the wrong address....but four days later they showed up and I can't be more pleased! They were packaged very well and did fine in their extended travels. Thanks to Evan's attention to detail all is well. Thanks Dan.
