Soft plastic nursery labels--weather resistant
« on: April 21, 2021, 11:52:03 AM »
Soft, weather resistant plastic/vinyl labels.

Anyone know where I can find these reasonably?

I have ordered labels now from 6 different sources, and all of them are those stupid hard plastic labels that break in the wind or dry rot in the sun and crack.

I want the soft material that is easily printed/written on, and capable of withstanding the elements.

The suppliers keep stating they have just that ^^^ , but when I purchase, I receive the same hard plastic crap.

Anyhow, thanks for suggestions.  Going back to my Mon-Wednesday.

Check with AM Leonard.  They used to carry them.

Brad I saw those come up before but some of the reviews mention they are just foil covered cardboard and the foil separates over time from rain.  Have you used them long term outside?

If he is using them for his nursery sales, he will need the vinyl tags.  These can be printed quickly and in volume and work with specific software that can track stock and sales.

These aren't practical for the nursery.

Good for the personal plants though.

You are correct.  Thank you.  I will check them out.  Haven't bought from them yet.

Yes, I have used them long term through many years of weather and they stay good.  Theres different brands, maybe chinese knock offs fall apart faster.

Many of the nurseries here use the metal tags.

Yeah its not as automated and can't be used with software but they hold up better than plastic.

The big mega nurseries use tags like these to label their trees

I use the vinyl wrap around nursery tags found on figbid.  They’re the best quality I’ve found.  I use a brother label maker to print on laminated labels and they last without fading.

Best,
Janet

A little outside of the box thinking here.  Check with a local outdoor vinyl sign printer.  Their machinery has the ability to print and cut easily and the material available now can last for years.  They might work a deal with you where you just provide your needs in a format they can quickly download to their machine.  In that your labels are small they could easily utilize scrap material that would otherwise go to waste.  Not as inexpensive as printing yourself but a lot less effort that you might be able to outsource and avoid the hassles.

Just a thought.

Mind sharing which Brother Label Maker you use as the ink is important relative to fading as well as the ability to load the blank label.  Thank you!

ball point pen, not for the ink, it just dents them.  Ive used a stick off the ground in a pinch.

I use AM Leonard Vinyl Tags and a Brother P touch label maker.  It is awesome and is super efficient for labeling. You also have control to put QR codes, simple pictures, and an abundance of information.

I find that functioning ballpoint pens make a mess when writing on aluminum; the ink does not dry but just smears. I use ballpoint pens which are out of ink.

Never had that problem, your pens are too happy.  Really I dont care about the ink, what matters is the indentation is there 3 or 4 years later when the tree starts fruiting and I need to see what was planted.

Anyway, I'll stop talking about aluminum tags, bullie will get mad soon if we don't stick to the script.

I have actually used a die kit for the aluminum tags.  When tying the tags to the trees, make sure to use proper wire or it will rust/breakdown in the elements just as fast as any other plastic or nylon tag.

I use sheet aluminum flashing left over from some roofing work... and it can easily be cut with a lever style paper cutter and a paper punch... and like Bully... I have a letter die kit I use to print the names.
Scrap copper wire for the ties will last for years.
Not really excellent for large quantity mass production... but economical and long lasting for my needs.

The ties that come with them are junk.  I use heavy gauge galvanized farm wire.  I thought about letter stamps, and I'm sure it looks good but too much effort, too many trees here.  Just getting everything labeled and cataloged here is a major pain.  Then trees get top worked and new tags are needed.  Who knew this stuff took so much work?

I use aluminum cans and write out/emboss the label with a dead ballpoint pen. That is as basic and inexpensive as it gets.

However, I use aluminum wire with my tags. Putting two different metals in contact with each other will lead to corrosion eventually, and the whole point of using metal tags is to permanently label a plant.
