Hello,

All seeds have been accounted for. Thank you all!

The flavor is really nice, orange candy with the perfect amount of sour.

Hi Kevin,

Have you found any way to tell the males from the females befoore they flower?

Also how large did your Imbes get before they began to flower?

I have about eight plants but they are too small yet (I think) to flower at only about ten to twelve inches tall.

With that many I should have some of each sex but it is still too soon to tell.

I may need to start a few more but before I buy seeds I'm looking for your comments on this.

Regards,

Hi Paul,

I’m also in Tampa!

I actually purchased these fruits...I have not grown imbe yet but am hoping to start many seeds so that I can grow them.

In my opinion, 8 seedlings would pretty much guarantee multiple males and females unless you just have some terrible luck.

10-12” is most likely too small for them to flower. I think it would take 4-6 years, and the size seems to be quite variable amongst this species, so I’m not sure at what size they would start flowering.

I’m not sure that there is a good way to tell if it’s male or female before flowers, I think you have to wait but I cannot be 100% sure since I don’t have any experience growing this garcinia.

My opinion is that you have enough seedlings to ensure you get a male and female though, so I wouldn’t buy more if I were you unless you have lots of space and want lots of plants.

Hope that helps!

Kevin

I watched a YouTube video about a Garcinia grower in Loxahatchee. The man has dozens of Garcinia species and really seems to know his stuff. He said that male Imbe plants usually have a sharp point on the end of their leaves while female plants' leaves are rounded at the end, with no point. I only have one Imbe that is too young and small to have fruited yet; so I have no way to personally test to see if he is right. If he is, then I will need to acquire a female Imbe at some point as my plant has points at the ends of the leaves.

I know he’s on Facebook you could try there. I think he’s located in loxahatchee if we’re thinking of the same guy

I had one that was only 3 years old I gave to a friend and it fruit on it's own, no others Imbes within 20 miles. On my trees I grafted males to the female tree and then grafted Luc's garcinia to the male tree.

Nice! 3 years is a short wait. I have one that is about a year old now from seed.
