Osmocote Plus is cheap on Amazon right now
« on: September 01, 2021, 11:06:59 AM »
I have a price alert set up when it goes below $15 for an 8lb bag.  Currently $13 on Amazon, limit of 3 unfortunately.  It typically sells for ~$23 for an 8lb bag so I always stock up when it goes on sale as I go through 16lbs a season.

If you buy a 50 pound bag you will get a much better deal. And the stuff keeps a very long time, just keep it dry.

At current amazon price, it is actually cheaper at amazon ($1.62/lb) when compared to 50 lb bag at Do My Own ($2.59/lb)

Do you still have the empty shells with this fertilizer when it's been expended? That was why I never got into this fertilizer. Not sure if anything's changed.

The bad part about this fertilizer is that the empty prill stay around for years.
If you top dress many empty prills float on top of soil.
Look hideous.

I think i paid $85 for a 50 pound bag here in Hawaii last time i bought it. And prices here are usually a lot higher due to shipping costs. So you might want to try a different source for 50 pound bags. But price of everything seems to be going up recently.

I don't remember exactly what I paid for the 50-lb. bag of Osmocote plus, but it was under $100.00 and freight prepaid.

Looks like nothing has changed, unfortunately. I used to use this all the time but they went to those plastic pellets for some reason. I actually still have some old stuff that I still use on houseplants.

Yes it still has the empty pill shells.  A shame, but I don't know of a better slow release option.  If you have a suggestion let me know :)

Brian, not trying to bash. I'm getting more lazy as I get older and consolidating my ferts. I've used Pro Gro Citrus and Avocado for last 4 years as my base fert. Does not last nearly as long but I add it monthly for potted plants and use it per label for in ground trees. I just don't want to mess with those plastic balls in my yard. Another chore for me!

I think the Prills have been persistent for many years, even before the coating change.
I was recycling some pot mix recently and put it thru a mesh screen by hand. That disappeared the pills, and hopefully liberated any unused fert still there.

Thanks Brian.

John B, that GroPower fertilizer is great for the regions that have it in stock.

Thanks for including the photos in your post.

So, is everyone using slow release in addition to another fert? I thought many of us were using just Peter's 25-5-15 ?

I too dislike the prills - a lot of the plants I am getting now (not citrus) have green prills. Yuk.

I use osmocote for containers, but peters granular for in-ground trees.  I like slow release for containers as I do not have a good way to mix fertilizer water for fifty container trees.

These good for tropicals?  Or should I just stick with organic granular and some chelated Iron and Manganese?

I use osmocote for all tropicals, not just citrus

Before I made a purchase, I noticed many reviews stating the new formula has micro-plastics. Anyone have more info on this?
