Fast flowering trifoliate graft
« on: June 16, 2023, 04:30:08 PM »
FFT graft from last year on taitri is blooming undeveloped green flowers, it's almost summer. Don't think the anthers will release pollen

Own roots looks to also have some flower buds developing. This must be the multiple flowering trait at work

Do they bloom as quickly in Paris as in the south?
I have never had a flowering plant. Neither as a seedling nor as a graft.

Very nice illya, is the pollen viable? I might be able to use it fresh if I get more developed blooms. Nagami kumquat has blooms forming so would possibly be able to use it there

Mine did not bloom after one but most after two years. No fruit, however. Never grew much. I have just grafted one on standard Poncirus and it made an underdeveloped flower like the one Victor showed.

It looks like the anthers are turning yellow on the petal-less flower in the pic. If it releases pollen I will have to save it. Nagami just opened 3 flowers today but I expect more to come soon in the next flush.

Yes, these flowers have plenty of pollen , also some are fully developed with pistil that is rather unusual for the first flowering of FFPT. Out of 6 seedlings 4 has flowers and possibly one fruit has been formed.
In the past I failed to produce hybrids with this strain that are also  fast flowering.
Even FDXFFPT with  straight thorns that should be definitely  zygotic are not flowering early.
Best regards,

My graft is producing more developed flowers now, with visible petals. I hope the next set has a stigma so that I can try to pollinate it with kumquat or whatever pollen I tried to store from last season. Even if the fruit doesn't ripen the potential seeds will probably be viable by November frosts.

Second flower had a pistil so I pollinated it. Pulled off the remaining under developed flowers

Where in zone 7 are you?

North Alabama, up by Madison/Huntsville area. Zone 7b. Last winter it got down to -17f (counting windchill) one night.

Interesting. They do well in Philadelphia, PA, in a bunch of different conditions. I've seen mature, fruiting specimens in an arid patio, on loam, and on mud.

My hybrid trees and small poncirus+ are basically in clay and rock/gravel backfill from the retaining wall behind them. I never supplement water either, just when there is a drought.  I have some pure poncirus in better soil around the yard as well. Grows very slowly.
